A. Description
I. Subject Matter
The subject matter is about women and children, the other figures in the artwork
are flowers and plants. The greenery of the artwork emphasizes the freshness and
innocence of a mother’s love to her child.
The materials used are Concrete and Polyurethane, Ed Defensor is well known for
reinforcing the infrastructures seen in the streets of Iloilo. The materials used gave
off a message that a mother’s love will always be strong and stable, and consistent
like its color and texture (concrete).
The dominant elements in the artwork are color, form and line. These three are
used in the artwork by the sculpture itself since the sculpture is in 3-D and the
colors and space are taken from the flowers and plants surrounding the sculpture.
B. Analysis
I. Elements
The related events that can be associated with these artworks are all kinds
of chaos that happened in our country. Specifically, World War I & II, events that
happened during Marcos’ reign; this symbolizes the ‘Inang Bayan’ protecting the
Filipinos and a loving mother protecting her child from all the possible worst case
scenarios.
The raw color of the sculpture compliments the message the sculptor
wants to give, it feels as if the sculpture is a real event. The materials made the
sculpture look three dimensional, making it look realistic. I felt motivated actually
when I saw the true meaning of the sculpture but when I first saw it I felt a bit
sympathetic because of the form itself, it looks like as If the mother and the child
is in distress and pain.
