Learning Outcomes:
1. discuss the role of science and technology in Philippine nation-building
2. evaluate government policies pertaining to science and technology in terms of their contributions
to nation; and
3. identify actual science and technology policies of the government and appraise their impact on the
development of the Filipino nation
Introduction
The development of science and technology in the Philippines has already
come along way. Many significant inventions and discoveries have accomplished by
or attributed to Filipinos.
There are two factors:
a. Internal Influences
Survival
Culture
Economic Activities
b. External influences
Foreign Colonizers
Trades with Foreign Countries
International Economic Demands

A. Spaniards
modern means of construction (walls, roads, bridges and other large infrastructures)
developed health and educations systems
beginning of formal science and technology in the country
B. Americans
Established a government agency, The Bureau of Science.

Activity
Divide the class into 6 groups. Each group will be assigned to a president after Marcos. Identify
some achievements in the field of science and technology under the assigned administration
and trace how they helped shape the Philippines as a nation.
