● What were the advantages of the Manila Galleon Trade to the Philippines?
During the galleon trade’s peak, Manila became one of the world’s great ports
which served as a focus for trade between China and Europe. It established Manila as the
first primate city in Southeast Asia by the early 17 th century and served as a link between
the Philippines and America which ultimately opened the Philippines to the world.
● What were the disadvantages of the Manila Galleon Trade to the Philippines?
Filipinos are what made up around 50 to 80% of the galleons’ crew but were paid
much less than sailors who were Spanish. Aside from unfair treatment, Spaniards in the
country depended on the galleon so much that when a ship sinks or becomes captured by
country’s own agriculture and industry were neglected and high profits from the trade
drew officials in the country toward Manila only, depriving provinces of their services.
● Do you think that a system like the Galleon Trade would work nowadays? Why or
why not?
With different countries opening their doors to globalization, I think that a system
like the old galleon trade is already ongoing by means of international trade and free
market. With that, I can say that to an extent, it would work since it does not divide but
creates ties that unify us and that aim to improve development in countries and raise
modern era?
Ever since the improvement of technology, different methods of transportation have been
created that has made people’s lives much easier. Airplanes and cargo ships are some of the
modes of transportation for trade that I would replace galleons with. They are more efficient
