SEA Games – Philippines 2019
INTRODUCTION
December 11, the opening of the Southeast Asian Games took place in the Philippines.
First competed in 1896, this is the 30th edition of the event. The 2019 Southeast Asian Games
will be the fourth time that the Philippines has held the biennial event after 1981, 1991 and 2005.
There were 404 events across 38 sports in Malaysia two years ago, but 2019 is the
biggest ever SEA Games. This year there were 530 events in 54 sports, with chess and
underwater hockey in as demonstration events.
The sports were divided into three broader categories: “Compulsory Sports”, “Asian
Games and Olympics Sports”, and “Regional and New Sports”.
New sports include e-sports, which offered medals across six games: Dota 2, Starcraft
II, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Arena of Valour, Tekken 7 and Hearthstone. We chose the
Team sport Ice hockey.
Elsewhere, other new additions include: 3-on-3 basketball, breaking (dancesport), beach
handball, jiu-jitsu, kurash, sambo, skateboarding, surfing, and underwater hockey
They competed at venues including the Philippine Arena, the world’s largest indoor
arena, which hosted the opening ceremony, with the closing ceremony in the athletics stadium in
New Clark City. That wass where the Black Eyed Peas and Apl.de. Ap, their Filipino-American
member, performed.
This year’s 44 Games venues were divided into four groups – the Clark cluster, Metro
Manila cluster, Subic cluster and “other areas”.

Ice Hockey is a game played on an ice-coated surface with skates on the feet, played in
between two teams with sticks to hit the puck and score goals against the other team. This game
has gained incredible acceptance from the people and is also being played at an international
level in the Olympics since 1920’s.
A team with six players including the goaltender, scores a point by hitting the puck in to
the goalpost. The team scoring more number of goals at the end of the game is the winner. Ice
Hockey is played between two teams having six players each. The team is divided into five
skaters and one goaltender. The skaters have three forward players and two defensemen
positioned on the field, and are free to move on the rink. The goaltender has restricted access on
the field and only has partial control on striking the puck.
During the game, the puck is passed from player to player on the rink and the opponent
team tries to prevent passing of the puck and the opponent goaltender blocks at the goalposts
from hitting the goals. The number of substitutions in this sport is unlimited and can be
substituted at any point of time during the play except when the opponent team ices the puck or
if the player is penalized. It is played in both men’s and women’s category.

SEA Games 2019: PH men’s hockey team grateful for fiery home crowd support
In front of an ecstatic home crowd, the Philippine Eagles started their Southeast Asian
(SEA) Games title defense campaign on a strong note after overpowering Malaysia, 15-1,
yesterday in the ice hockey tournament opener at the SM Mall of Asia Ice Skating Rink.
The defending SEA Games champions delivered a strong message to the competition,
showing no mercy against the Malaysian team as they pulled away early in the first period to
skate away with their first win.
Not as prominent as other teams due to their sport’s perceived incompatibility with the
country’s tropical climate, the Eagles played an inspired game with the Filipino crowd as their
sixth man.
Captain Steven Füglister, who collaborated with defender EJ Sibug to lead the team with
three goals each, expressed his gratitude to the home crowd who came out to show full support
for the Philippine team.
It was a total team effort for Team Philippines with eight different players recording
goals in their landslide win against Malaysia, a far different outcome compared to their narrow 8-
7 overtime win back in the 2017 edition of the tournament.
CONCLUSION
Although in last year’s SEA Games hosted by Malaysia, Philippine Ice Hockey team
defeated Thailand in order to bring home a gold medal, this year, opponents became more
formidable but still managed to take down Malaysia for the bronze medal.
Our group had watched the game through stream and witnessed how they conquer their
opponent for a sweet victory. The Philippine team had proven their intensive training through
what they had presented and how they played in their deciding game.
We were not fully aware of how the game is played because most of us (Filipinos) are
more inclined to other games such as Basketball and Volleyball, but watching them play helped
us understand the basics and scoring points of the game and made us realized that we shouldn’t
just focus on the “famous” games and that we should support rising athletes in their respective
sport.
30th SEA Games was an eye opener specially for the Filipinos as it had shown that there
are more sports to consider not just basketball and volleyball but also other sports as well. It was
also an avenue to showcase our country’s top spots/landmarks and other capabilities of Filipino
athletes.
