Professional Dispositions Statement Assessment

My personal professional dispositions statement is, “As a teacher, I strive to build a

community within my classroom based on respect, equity of voice, and one who values different

cultures. Together we will persevere through any obstacles we may face to reach our learning

goals. I believe that every child has a unique learning style, intelligence, and personality that will

help shape them into who they are made to be. As a teacher, my job is to challenge each student,

so they may reach their fullest potential. Through creativity, hard work, and imagination, we will

win each day!”

My self-assessment supports my professional dispositions statement because I strive each

day to be professional. I dress professionally, strive to always have a great attitude, treat others

with respect, and try to be as fair as possible when teaching the students. I have grown

tremendously throughout my program of study. I started my program with GCU in October

2016. I, at first, did not know what major I wanted to do. I had to make an adult decision of what

would make me happiest in life. Working with children was always on my top list. What I did

not know, at the time, was how much I really wanted to become a teacher. My beginning and

only thought was that I wanted to become a better teacher than the ones that I have had in the

past. That was my motivation. I did not have caring teachers in grade school. As I went through

my clinical practice before student teaching, I still saw teachers acting how they did when I was

in school. They seemed, frustrated, bored, annoyed, etc. I needed to break this bad habit I was
2

seeing. I have grown from a shy observing student to one who does silly faces in stories. I make

different noises and motions to capture students’ attention. I talk to the children about their home

life and care about how they are feeling. I am becoming who I’ve always wanted to become. I’m

proud of who am becoming as I am finishing my degree. I thought I would not be prepared post-

graduation, but student teaching is really helping me learn what kind of teacher I want to be.

Some steps I will take to improve are to learn to be sterner for students with behavioral

issues. I have a soft heart and feel bad when I tell them they must sit out for recess or sit on

lockers during a brain break. I’m very much an empathetic person, more so now that I have my

own daughter. But I need to take the steps to be stern by holding the students accountable for

their actions. Also, getting the whole class to listen is one of my weaknesses. It is getting better

though because my cooperating teacher showed me some of her tricks. I now have a call back

with a clap, and sometimes if I sit quietly and look at the students who are talking, they will stop.

By taking the right steps, I will get better and better each day.
