FIRST MASS FACTS:

 March 31, 1521

 Mazaua
 RA 2733
 researcher lead to a conclusion that Antonio Pigafetta’s account is more firm than Albo
(In Albo’s account he didn’t mention the first Mass but only the planting of the cross
upon a mountain top from which could be seen three islands to the west and southwest
unlike Pigafetta he mention in his account that the first Mass is held in Butuan on Easter
Sunday, March 31.)

held-in-butuan-not-in-limasawa/

Limasawa evidence
 The position of Mazaua, as plotted by Pigafetta, matched that of Limasawa.
 The measurement of distances between Homonhon and Limasawa between Limasawa
and Cebu, as computed by the pro-Limasawa group, matches or approximates the
delineations made by Pigafetta of the distances between Homonhon and Mazaua and
between Mazaua and Cebu.
 Magellan's fleet took a route from Homonhon to Mazaua and from Mazaua to Cebu that
did not at any time touch Butuan or any other part of Mindanao. The docking facilities at
Limasawa did not pose any problem for Magellan's fleet which anchored near or at some
safe distance from the island of the eastern shore.
 Log from Francisco Albo

Butuan evidence
 For three centuries, it was the prevailing belief that Pigafetta's Mazaua was a place called
Masao near Butuan City in Northern Mindanao. The Butuan belief persisted from the
17th to the 19th century.
 recovery of 10 Balahanghai boats which were accidentally dug up near Masao River in
1976
 Pigafetta in his account specifically wrote: “That island was called Butuan and Calagan.
The name of the first king is Raia Colambu and the second Raia Siaui…It is twenty-five
leagues from Acquada, and is called Masaua.”
 Also the differences with respect to the recorded latitudinal locations of Masawa and
Limasawa as reported by the different chroniclers of that time favor the former more than
the latter. It can be argued that the accuracy of these estimations, given the facilities of
that time, may not be that precise. Besides, there can also be strong motives for making
intentionally wrong latitudinal locations to mislead enemies and competitors.
 Another argument forwarded is that at that time Masawa in Butuan had some primacy
over Limasawa since Masawa had a safe and rich harbor while Limasawa did not have
one at that time.
