Roles and Responsibilities of RJHS Student Council
Roles of Student Council
● To officially represent the student body of Refugio ISD- Jr. High School.
● To identify and help solve problems/issues encountered by students in the school.
● To communicate the opinions of the student body to the school administration on any subject
that concerns students and on which the Council wishes to be consulted.
● To promote and encourage the involvement of students in organizing school activities.
● To communicate concerns to RJHS administration.
Responsibilities of Student Council Members
● To promote the interest of the students among the school administration, staff, and parents.
● To inform students about subjects/issues that is of concern to the RJHS student body.
● To organize financial campaigns for school activities.
● To participate in the process and revision of school policies, regulations, and procedures.
● To propose activities to school administration that would improve the quality of life in the school.
● To provide service to the school and community.
● To organize events and activities that engage students, staff, parents, and the community.
● To maintain good relations with school staff, administration, and the PTA.
● To maintain adequate grades and conduct marks while serving as a council member.
● To attend Council meetings, events and activities as regularly as possible.
Membership
Officers:
● President:
1. Preside at all Student Council Meetings and Executive Board Meetings.
2. Appoint Committees as necessary.
3. Vote on any matters in which the Council is equally divided.
● Vice President:
1. Perform the duties of the President in his/her absence.
2. Assist the President and check regularly to see that all committee chairpersons
are performing their assigned duties.
● Treasurer:
1. Work with the advisors and bookkeeper to maintain records and receipts of the
Student Council.
2. Make a brief financial report biweekly to the Student Council.
● Secretary:
1. Take minutes of all official meetings of the Student Council.
2. Keep an accurate record of attendance at meetings.
3. Work with publicist to keep members informed.
● Publicist:
1. Publicizes RJHS Student Council
2. Perform the duties of the President in his/her absence.
3. Keeps detailed records of all events that we take part in
4. Works with advisor on Student Council Webpage
5. Be responsible for heading up State Reports
6. Lunch advertisements for announcements for any school-related events.

● Social Chair:
1. Blog and inform officers of progress and problems.
2. Maintain the student council website with publicist.
3. Work with publicist to keep members informed.
Campus Representative:
1. Campus Advisory committee meetings
2. Talk with campus principal about any campus issues or problems.
3. Liaison between Refugio Jr. High and Refugio High School.
1. Student Council will consist of seventh and eighth graders that are/will be enrolled in the
upcoming school year. Refugio Jr. High School Student Council has a work-on program.
Students that wish to be a part of Student Council must complete the designated number
of volunteer hours by the end of each semester. To be considered for membership,
students must meet the following requirements:
1. Must meet UIL eligibility
2. Must complete the required number of work-on hours by the designated date
3. Must turn in a completed Student Council packet by the designated date.
2. Students that do not meet the above criteria will begin their Student Council year on
probation.
3. Students must have 10 service hours each semester to continue membership. Failure to
do so will be grounds for dismissal.
Eligibility and Academics
1. All Student Council members will need to be in good academic standing in order to
remain eligible for their role on Student Council. Students will not be allowed to have any
failing grades or N’s and U’s in conduct. Any member not meeting the above criteria will
be placed on probation and will have to be in good standing by the next progress report.
Failure to do so may result in their dismissal from Student Council.
2. Students will also be required to earn points through their donations and service on a
monthly basis to maintain eligibility.
1. Meetings
1. Meetings will take place once or twice a month during school tutorials on Thursdays.
Every Student Council member must be present at each meeting. Unexcused absences
from school on a meeting day will be counted against the member.
2. After 3 consecutive unexcused absences from meetings will be grounds for dismissal
from Student Council.
Student Council Activities
1. Community Service: Student Council will work collaboratively with others to help the
community.
2. Energy and Environment (E&E): Student Council will take part in promoting school
beautification and spreading environmental awareness. Projects will be centered towards
keeping the grounds of RISD looking neat and educating the school of environmental
issues. This includes recycling.
3. Drug, Alcohol, Safety and Health (DASH): Student Council will come together to help
raise awareness in the school and their community within the following categories: drug,
RISD- Jr. High School Student Council Handbook
alcohol, safety and health. Members will research and provide information to RISD staff
and students about the negative or positive effects of the aforementioned categories.
4. Health and Wellness: Form partnership and collaborate with community organizations to
bring awareness and participate in healthy active living.
5. Teacher Appreciation: Showing appreciation for our teachers and helping them with
anything that they need help with.
