DEMONSTRATE HOW AN ETHICAL CULTURE CAN BE CREATED
What is organization culture?

Every organization has a set of values that characterize how people behave
and how the organization carries out every day business. Culture can have a
positive or negative effect on a company.

Positive Ethical Culture is essentially means the employees of a

organization should posses following attributes.

1. Innovating and risk tacking

2. Attention to detail
3. Outcome orientation
4. People orientation
5. Team orientation
6. Aggressiveness
7. Stability

The real strength of any organization is mainly depending on its individual

employee’s cultural ethics. We can’t develop a company, whether it’s a private
or a government / PSU without focusing on the employee’s cultural ethics. It’s
like a building without basement.

Although the topic is very general in ethical culture, here I have focus on
my project in ORGANIZATION/COMPANY ETHICS CULTURE.

Let’s analysis, how an ethical culture can be created?

An organization’s culture doesn’t pop out of thin air. Once established it

rarely fades away. However, if the company endeavour with the concrete steps
over a period of time the company’s ethical culture can change. Let’s see the
steps needs to create the ethical culture.

1.TOP MANAGEMENT BEHAVIOR

The first and foremost think in creating an ethical culture in an organization

is, the top management should honest and it have very keen interest to create
it. The leaders who have complete lack of ego, coupled with strong will and
ambition for organizational success.

The leaders build a culture base on values of individual freedom and

responsibility, but within a framework of organizational purpose, goals and
systems.

The employees will look to the actions of top management as a

benchmark. Hence the top management action shall be transparent and positive
orientation.

2. VISION AND MISSION

To cultivate the ethical culture, the organization should have strong vision
and mission. The top management should have the clarity about their vision and
mission. it’s top managements sole responsibility to propagate the vision and
mission statement to every one the employee in the organization.

The company may convey vision and mission statements in all the possible
ways, such as display the banners in the suitable locations, create logos, print
the vision and mission statements in the broachers, official web sites etc.

3. STORIES

The company may narrate based on true events that can frequently shared
among employees and told to new employees to inform them about an
organization. Which involves the stories about the founder of the organization,
Heroes, Legends who made a significant contribution to the organization
development and Myths.

4. SYMBOLS

Some companies printed their logos on their uniforms and manifested that
the logo is a think to proud. It symbolizes the deeper value of an organization.

5. RITES AND FUNCTIONS

By conducting official functions periodically such as SAFETY WEEK

CELEBRATION, BOOK FAIR FUNCTION and SPORTS events that will aid to
develop a positive ethical culture among the employees.

6. NEW RECRUITMENT

For developing ethical culture, the HR part is very crucial. While

recruitment a new employee, the recruitment committee has to meticulously
analyse each candidates attitude towards team spirit, group cohesiveness,
ability to change and adoptability with the existing culture. Because recruitment
is a gate way. If an organization selects the apt persons, it will strengthen the
existing ethical culture. If a wrong person got selected, he would become an
obstacle of the organization culture. That too in a government or PSU companies
due to job security it can’t be terminate the person. Hence recruitment is a very
crucial task in an organization.

7. WORK LIFE BALANCE

In order create ethical culture, the management should have focus

on work life balance of employees. This is very crucial. This can be achieved by
maintaining employee welfare schemes like LTA & LTE tours, maintaining holiday
homes, providing adequate recreation amenities like swimming pools, play
grounds etc.

8. VISIBLY REWARD ETHICAL ACTS AND PUNISH UNETHICAL ONES

Appraise managers on how their decision measure up against the

organization’s code of ethics. Review the means as well as the ends. Visibly
reward those who act ethically and conspicuously punish those who don’t.

9. PROVIDE PROTECTIVE MECHANISMS

By providing formal mechanisms so employees can discuss ethical
dilemmas and report unethical behaviour without fear of reprimand. These might
include ethical counsellors, ombudsman or ethical officer.

10. PROVIDE ETHICAL TRAINING

Set up seminars, workshops and training programs to reinforce the

organization’s standards of conduct, clarify what practices are permissible, and
address potential ethical dilemmas.

11. REWARDING MORE THEN PUNISHMENT

In order to create ethical culture the management has to develop a

positive organizational culture that emphasizes building on employee strength ,
rewards more then it punishes, and emphasizes individual vitality and growth.

12. ENCOURAGE KNOWLEDGE SHARING

Knowledge hiding is a one of the important problems in every organization.

Since the employee’s want to retain their position and importance in a company,
they are very seldomly share their knowledge . To over come this problems the
management has to take a elegant steps to encourage knowledge sharing such
as PPT, seminar and Quality circles etc.

13. TRANSPARANCY IN PROMOTION POLICIES

In order to create ethical culture, the company should maintain

transparent promotion polices. If a deserved employee fail to promote means,
which will demotivate entire team leads to affect the ethical culture of an
organization. And vice versa if a wrong and impotent person got promoted
means that will drastically affect the ethical culture.

To avoid the Anchoring effect on performance evaluation of employee,

the top management to insist the middle managers/supervisors to maintain the
confidential report on every quarter of the year. This report is very use full in
final evaluation of employees. Also these records are very much useful in
decision making if disciplinary actions against any of the employee who

undergone investigation for his maloperations. So these measure ensure the
ethical culture of an organization.

These are the steps which can CREATE ETHICAL CULTURE in an

organisation.

Yours faithfully
