The Deus Ex franchise
The original Deus Ex its sequel Deus Ex 2: Invisible War remain some of the most influential titles in gaming, using the first person shooter genre as a canvas and painting over it an intriguing world of conspiracies and larger questions about what it means for technology to become an extension of humanity. Those core tenets continued in the more modern sequels, 2011’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution and 2013’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. All four games are excellent in their own right, and all are on sale for over 80% off each. You can pick up the whole series and DLC for less than $20 total.
Divinity: Original Sin 2
Before Baldur’s Gate 3, there was Divinity Original Sin 2. Recipient of countless accolades, Larian’s other heralded series has a lot of the dynamic gameplay that has made Baldur’s Gate so compelling, only without the Dungeons & Dragons license. You can pick up Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition for less than $15, or upgrade to the Divinity: Original Sin 2 Eternal Edition for 50% off, which includes the entire anthology of Divinity games.
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
A detective mystery where understanding your own self-loathing is just as important as solving the murder at hand. Disco Elysium eschews combat and traditional stats for something far more existential. There are a very few experiences quite like a Disco Elysium playthrough, and The Final Cut sweetens the deal by adding full voice acting.
Gloomhaven
Gloomhaven is an amazing board game full of interesting choices, branching paths, intriguing characters, and ships in a box that could double as a coffin. If shelf space is at a premium in your home but you still want to experience what Gloomhaven and its associated expansions have to offer, you can find them all discounted at GOG.
Shadowrun
Shadowrun is a franchise that doesn’t get nearly enough love with its awesome cyberpunk meets swords and sorcery aesthetic. If you’ve never had the opportunity to play the tabletop version of this dystopian RPG, Shadowrun Returns is your best option Chummer. You can pick up Shadowrun Returns and its subsequent expansions, Hong Kong, and Dragonfall each for $5 or less.
Songs of Conquest
One of the most recent games on this list, Songs of Conquest is a modern take on the Heroes of Might and Magic, mixing tactical combat and kingdom management with some novel twists on how magic alignment works.
Torment: Tides of Numenera Immortal Edition
An RPG inspired by the classics, Torment: Tides of Numenera is considered a spiritual successor to the legendary Planescape: Torment and was developed by many of the same people. Featuring a complex narrative and a vivid, isometric art style, Tides of Numenera is a great option for anyone that’s sick of the typical fantasy or post-apocalyptic settings.
Wasteland 3: Colorado Collection
The Wasteland Rangers are going to the Rockies. Wasteland 3 was penned by many of the same developers who worked on the original Wasteland from 1988 and is a great option if you’re in the mood for a post-apocalyptic RPG but miss the tongue-in-cheek humor and witticisms of the pre-Bethesda Fallout games. Wasteland 3: Colorado Collection includes all of the post-launch DLC.
Wildermyth
There are few games that can match the narrative flexibility that Wildermyth provides absent an actual human GM. One of Polygon’s best games of 2021, Wildermyth manages to create procedurally-generated stories that are unique every run, and yet also somehow make them emotionally compelling in the process. It’s a truly unique experience that would be impressive coming from any studio; that it was made by a smaller indie team makes it even wilder.
