It’s October, which in the world of shopping means that we’re getting awfully close to the avalanche of savings that come with Black Friday and Cyber Monday — but before that, however, Amazon is celebrating the start of fall with October Prime Day, a tradition from the past few years that gives shoppers a taste of this season’s best deals. While the two-day sales event doesn’t officially start until Oct. 8, we’ve already seen a handful of noteworthy deals pop up early.

While a Prime membership will be required to take advantage of the savings during Prime Day itself, of this current list, a membership is required for three of the items below: Anker’s Prime portable battery, the novel Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence, and The Hobbit: 75th Anniversary edition. We’ll keep you updated on any great deals that arise both now and especially during October Prime Day.

$40

Luna is Amazon’s cloud game streaming service, offering a packed game library to subscribers (and even more freebies if you have Prime). The Luna controller is Wi-Fi connected to ensure low latency, and it can work with almost any modern device. This bundle includes a free 1-month trial to the service, which otherwise costs $9.99 monthly.

$25

Amazon’s compact Fire TV Stick 4K plugs directly into your television’s HDMI port to deliver seemingly endless content from the top TV and movie streaming services. Fun fact: you can connect a wireless Xbox controller to it and play titles via Game Pass, just as if it were an Xbox.

While not an official October Prime Day sale, right now you can save 19% off Cascadia, a 2022 Spiel des Jahres Game of the Year winner and one of Polygon’s 22 best board games. Cascadia is a tile-drafting game about balancing the ecosystem. It falls in the category of “easy to learn, hard to master” with myriad different strategies. It can be played solo or with up to four players.

$13

R. F. Kuang’s Babel was one of Polygon’s favorite sci-fi fiction and fantasy books of 2022, mixing fantasy with historical fiction as it critiques British imperialism. It made headlines for its baffling disqualification for the Hugo Awards.

$16

If you have a Prime membership, you ought to treat yourself (or a near and dear LOTR fan) to this hardcover version of The Hobbit while it’s almost half off. It contains drawings and full-color illustrations by J.R.R. Tolkien.

$140

While much tougher to install than a microSD card, Corsair’s MP600 Mini 2 TB M.2 SSD is worth the effort if you want faster storage for your games. But you’ll likely need some tools, like this iFixit Essentials tool kit for $30, to open up your Steam Deck.

$75

A new 10.1-inch tablet doesn’t have to cost as much as your phone. Amazon’s Fire HD 10 fits the bill with a big display, and enough storage and power to fulfill your various entertainment needs, whether you want to stream movies, read comics, or play games.

$50

Anker’s mini, yet mighty Prime portable battery has the speed to quickly charge most popular USB-C consumer tech products, be it a laptop, tablet, or a portable handheld like the Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch, or Asus ROG Ally. The real-time display that tells you the charging speed (and how much juice is left) is the icing on the cake.

$80

Apple’s AirTags are the best Bluetooth trackers for those who use an iPhone. These trackers can be tucked into your backpack, purse, gaming handheld case, or along with anything you want to keep close track of. You can open the Find My app on your phone to see where each of the tags is located at any time.
