No cast iron? No problem.
When it comes to burgers, I like them only one way: smashed. But the perfect smash requires the right equipment. After many failed attempts to evenly squish patties with a silicone turner, I decided it was time to invest in a grill press.

A stainless-steel alternative
All the presses I tried previously were cast iron, which is finicky to maintain and annoying to wash. So I picked up this Cuisinart model, made of heavy-duty stainless steel, and gave it a smash. It quickly became my ride-or-die press.

Achieve ultrathin-smash-burger status
This grill press is made with a flat surface wide enough to create perfect-size patties with every smash. Cast-iron models weigh around two pounds. This one is lighter, at just a pound, and performs just as well.

Have no fear
The handle is sturdy and helps secure a good grip to apply an even amount of pressure. For an ultrathin smash-burger patty, don’t be afraid to give it a good smash. The thinner the patty, the better it’ll brown and unlock its umami.

Go beyond the patty
It’s not just great with burgers. I use it to evenly toast grilled cheeses, griddled cinnamon rolls, croissant ham and Swiss sammies, crispy asparagus spears or smashed mini potatoes — the list goes on.
