Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing among mammals around the world, and domestic dogs are no exception. There is no approved cure for canine IBD with limited treatment options. Novel probiotic bacteria discovery from free-ranging animals for the treatment of IBD in domestic pets can likely yield promising probiotic candidates. Consequently, the overall aim was to isolate bacteria from free-ranging animals that could potentially be utilized as novel probiotics. Two bacteria identified as unique Paenibacillus spp. strains by small ribosomal RNA (16S) gene sequencing were isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of a North American Gray Wolf (Canis lupus). The bacteria were typed as Gram-variable, and both were catalase/oxidase positive as well as sensitive to commonly used antibiotics. The bacteria digested complex carbohydrates and lipids by standard assays. The isolated bacteria also inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus luteus. The whole genome sequence (WGS) length of bacterial isolate ClWae17B was 6,939,193 bp, while ClWae19 was 7,032,512 bp, both similar in size to other Paenibacillus spp. The genomes of both bacteria encoded enzymes involved with the metabolism of complex starches and lipids, such as lyases and pectinases, along with encoding antimicrobials such as lanthipeptides, lasso peptides, and cyclic-lactone-autoinducers. No pernicious virulence genes were identified in the WGS of either bacterial isolate. Phylogenetically, the most closely related bacteria based on 16S gene sequences and WGS were P. taichungensis for ClWae17B and P. amylolyticus for ClWae19. WGS analyses and phenotypic assays supported the hypothesis that the isolates described constitute two novel candidate probiotic bacteria for potential use in dogs.

Maize, regarded as a staple economic crop, attracts special global attention with the aim to enhance its production. Foliar fertilisation offers a complementary method to traditional soil fertilisation amongst resource-limited agricultural systems, providing a more efficient solution to nutrient deficiencies, especially in suboptimal soil conditions. This study aimed to analyse foliar fertiliser formulation research directions and their application in maize production. A literature search was conducted in the Web of Science (WoS) database. Bibliometric analyses were performed using the VOSviewer software (version 1.6.17). The changes in the publication trends of documents were tested using the Mann–Kendall test. The production effects of foliar fertilisation were independently synthesised. The results showed a strong positive increase in publication trends regarding maize foliar fertilisation (R2 = 0.7842). The predominant nutrients that affected maize production were nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, zinc, iron, and manganese. The timely foliar application of nutrients corrected deficiencies and/or sustained nutrient supply under several abiotic stresses. Foliar application at critical growth stages like flowering and grain filling boosted carbohydrate and protein content, lipid levels, kernel size, mineral content, and the weight of the maize grain. This review identified important research gaps, namely genotype-specific responses, interactions with other agronomic practices, and long-term environmental effects.

Background: Although self-compassion has been consistently linked to positive outcomes in adults and adolescents, only a few studies have explored self-compassion in children and early adolescents due to a lack of measures specifically designed for younger populations. Methods: The current study explored the psychometric properties of the Italian translation of the Self-Compassion Scale for Children (SCS-C) in a sample of 230 children (mean age = 10.52, SD = 1.33). Results: The results revealed a two-factor solution for our data, with a positive self-compassion factor and a negative self-compassion factor, which were shown to be internally consistent. The SCS-C scores correlated with the children’s mindfulness, self-esteem, and narcissistic traits in the assumed directions. Conclusions: Overall, our study preliminarily supports the reliability and validity of the Italian version of the SCS-C.

Background: Severe COVID-19 presents a variety of clinical manifestations associated with inflammatory profiles. People living with HIV (PLWH) could face a higher risk of hospitalization and mortality from COVID-19, depending on their immunosuppression levels. This study describes inflammatory markers in COVID-19 clinical outcomes with and without HIV infection. Methods: We analyzed 112 inpatients of the Hospital Center for COVID-19 (INI/FIOCRUZ), including 22 cases of COVID-19 in PLWH (COVID/PLWH group). Plasma samples were tested for a panel of 15 cytokines by Luminex. Sociodemographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected from patients’ clinical records. Results: COVID-19 individuals were stratified according to the WHO clinical severity profiles at hospitalization. Significant differences in clinical scores, symptoms (coughs), and the occurrence of HIV infection were found among the groups. Clinical blood parameters and plasma cytokines were analyzed among COVID-19 groups with distinct severity profiles. Critical COVID-19 cases showed higher levels of inflammatory markers (Bilirubin, D-dimer, PCR, and urea, as well as IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, INF-α, IL-1β, IL-17A, IL-23, IL-6) than moderate and severe groups. The COVID/PLWH group had lower CD4 counts (64 cells/mm3) and cytokine levels than other COVID-19 patients. Conclusions: Overall, critically ill COVID-19 patients exhibited heightened inflammatory responses, while COVID/PLWH demonstrated unique immunological characteristics without increased mortality risk.

The appropriate application of nitrogen fertilizers and biochar to the soil is beneficial for soybean growth, and a combination of biochar and nitrogen can improve low-nitrogen fertilizer utilization efficiency. However, the effect of the combination of biochar and nitrogen fertilizer on soybean roots is still unclear. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the changes in endophytic bacterial communities and metabolites in soybean roots under different combinations of biochar and nitrogen fertilizer treatments by setting different fertilization levels and using high-throughput sequencing and non-targeted metabolomics techniques. The results showed that applying 20 t/ha of biochar and 180 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilizer (C2N1) resulted in the highest soybean yield. By studying the endophytic bacterial community in soybean roots, it was observed that the dominant phyla were Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Actinobacteriota, and the dominant genera were Bradyrhizobium, Streptomyces, and Rhizobacter. Moreover, a metabolic pathway analysis revealed that glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchor biosynthesis was the most significant metabolic pathway in the C0N1 vs. C0N0 comparison group, and glycerophospholipid metabolism was the most significant metabolic pathway in the C2N1 vs. C1N1 comparison group; they were both associated with regulatory mechanisms such as plant growth promotion and nutrient cycling. Structural equation modeling indicates that both endophytic bacteria and metabolites have a significant positive impact on yield. Bradyrhizobium and Rhizobium are observable variables with significant positive effects on endophytic bacteria, while Phe-Thr and 7-allyloxycoumarin are observable variables with significant positive effects on metabolites. Endophytic bacteria not only have a direct impact on crop yield, but also indirectly affect crop yield through their effects on metabolites. This study has important scientific value and guiding significance for improving soybean yields.

Previous studies indicate that individuals at high altitudes have a lower pain threshold than those living at sea level. This study evaluates the differences in pain perception among young people living at an altitude of 3800 m and after acute exposure to a severe hypoxic environment at more than 5100 m. Fourteen people (BMI of 22.6 ± 1.2 and age of 23.3 ± 1.9 years) residing in the city of Puno (3825 m) participated in an ascent to the Populated Center of La Rinconada (>5100 m). The unilateral ischemia pain provocation test was used, applying pressure with a manual sphygmomanometer to generate transient ischemia in the arm while the patient opens and closes their hand. Onset, peak, and resolution times of pain, heart rate, and oxygen saturation were recorded. At their residence altitude of 3828 m, the mean hemoglobin was 16.16 ± 2.29, while at 5100 m, mean hemoglobin increased to 17.57 ± 1.74. The average time to pain onset in the right arm was 30.43 s ± 14.15 at 3828 m, whereas at 5100 m above sea level, the pain perception was at 31.00 s ± 19.01. At 3828 m, the average time until pain sensation in the left arm was 19.93 s ± 9.44 and increased to 23.07 s ± 10.83 at 5100 m. During exposure to a severe hypoxic environment, the pain perception threshold was similar between 3828 m and 5100 m above sea level.

Clarifying the correlation between macro–microscopic granular parameters and establishing effective parameter calibration methods for determining granular microparameters is of great importance for numerical simulations of granular flows. Currently, there is a gap in the systematic study of small particles, using sandy soil as an example, and the development of rational and effective calibration methods. Through inter-particle friction experiments, particle–wall friction experiments, uniaxial compression experiments and numerical simulations, we studied the relationship between macroscopic and microscopic parameters. Based on these studies, appropriate empirical formulas were proposed, and based on the correlation of macroscopic and microscopic parameters, a method for calibrating microscopic parameters was presented. This approach uses empirical formulas for macroscopic and microscopic parameters in combination with the constraints imposed by the granular stiffness coefficient to calibrate granular parameters. This study provides a systematic process framework for the calibration of microscopic parameters of small particles, standardizing the parameter calibration process and improving both efficiency and quality.

The underlying mechanisms and diagnostic biomarkers for the progress of COVID-19 in HIV patients have not been fully elucidated. In this study, the aim is to analyze the metabolomic profiles of HIV/AIDS patients co-infected with SARS-CoV-2 and to identify biomarkers indicative of co-infection. In this study, we conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of peripheral blood samples collected from 30 HIV/AIDS patients co-infected with SARS-CoV-2 (pc group) and 30 patients without SARS-CoV-2 (nc group). In this study, through non-targeted metabolomics and lipidomics analysis, 77 differential metabolites were identified in the plasma of patients co-infected with HIV and SARS-CoV-2 compared to the nc group, with vitamin K1 emerging as a significant feature. Moreover, the plasma of the pc group showed disturbances in lipid metabolism, with elevated triglycerides (TG) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) and decreased phosphatidylglycerol (PG) compared to the control group. Vitamin K1 may be a biomarker for SARS-CoV-2 in HIV/AIDS patients, and changes in the levels of TG, PC, and PG molecules appear to be the main features following HIV co-infection with COVID-19. The emphasis in our study is on the power of using comprehensive metabolomics (lipidomics) approaches to identify metabolic biomarkers and potential mechanisms of COVID-19 in HIV/AIDS patients.

Steam reforming is an important industrial process for hydrogen production. Acetone, the by-product of phenol production from cumene peroxidation, is a useful source of hydrogen due to its availability and low value compared to hydrogen fuel. This study aimed to utilize the Gibbs free energy minimization method using the Soave–Redlich–Kwong (SRK) equation of state (EOS) to conduct a thermodynamic analysis of the steam reforming process for pure component acetone. The steam reforming process is temperature dependent, with increasing temperatures leading to higher hydrogen production. Competing reactions, particularly the exothermic reverse water–gas shift, impact hydrogen yields beyond 650 °C. The study identified 600 °C as the optimum temperature to strike a balance between maximizing hydrogen production and minimizing the reverse water–gas shift’s impact. The optimal hydrogen yield (70 mol%) was achieved at a steam-to-oil ratio (STOR) of 12. High STOR values shift the equilibrium of the water–gas shift reaction towards hydrogen production due to increased steam, effectively consuming acetone and favoring the desired product. Atmospheric pressure is optimum for hydrogen production because the equilibrium of gas phase reactions shifts in favor of the lighter components at lower pressures.

Pine wilt disease (PWD) is a highly destructive worldwide forest quarantine disease that has the potential to destroy entire pine forests in a relatively brief period, resulting in significant economic losses and environmental damage. Manual monitoring, biochemical detection and satellite remote sensing are frequently inadequate for the timely detection and control of pine wilt disease. This paper presents a fusion model, which integrates the Mamba model and the attention mechanism, for deployment on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to detect infected pine trees. The experimental dataset presented in this paper comprises images of pine trees captured by UAVs in mixed forests. The images were gathered primarily during the spring of 2023, spanning the months of February to May. The images were subjected to a preprocessing phase, during which they were transformed into the research dataset. The fusion model comprised three principal components. The initial component is the Mamba backbone network with State Space Model (SSM) at its core, which is capable of extracting pine wilt features with a high degree of efficacy. The second component is the attention network, which enables our fusion model to center on PWD features with greater efficacy. The optimal configuration was determined through an evaluation of various attention mechanism modules, including four attention modules. The third component, Path Aggregation Feature Pyramid Network (PAFPN), facilitates the fusion and refinement of data at varying scales, thereby enhancing the model’s capacity to detect multi-scale objects. Furthermore, the convolutional layers within the model have been replaced with depth separable convolutional layers (DSconv), which has the additional benefit of reducing the number of model parameters and improving the model’s detection speed. The final fusion model was validated on a test set, achieving an accuracy of 90.0%, a recall of 81.8%, a map of 86.5%, a parameter counts of 5.9 Mega, and a detection speed of 40.16 FPS. In comparison to Yolov8, the accuracy is enhanced by 7.1%, the recall by 5.4%, and the map by 3.1%. These outcomes demonstrate that our fusion model is appropriate for implementation on edge devices, such as UAVs, and is capable of effective detection of PWD.

Background: Malnutrition is a significant concern for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients, as treatment often impairs mastication, causes dysphagia, and alters taste and smell, leading to reduced food intake and a diminished quality of life. Thus, this study aims to compare nutritional intake in HNC survivors using maxillofacial prostheses (MFPs) to healthy reference values and identify the factors influencing their dietary intake. Methods: The study included 56 patients treated for HNC undergoing rehabilitation with comfortable definitive dentures for over a month at the Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic of Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital. Data were gathered on the demographics, clinical characteristics, malnutrition risk using a malnutrition universal screening tool, dietary intake consistency via a functional oral intake scale, swallowing difficulties with eating assessment tool-10, and nutrient intake through a Brief-type Self-administered Dietary History Questionnaire. Patients’ nutrient intakes were compared to the reference values from the BDHQ ad hoc computer algorithm based on the 2015 National Health and Nutrition Survey in Japan. Factors such as maximum mouth opening and the number of functional teeth were also assessed together with the aforementioned factors. Results: There were significant differences between the patient values and reference values, with lower intakes of total dietary fiber, carbohydrates, and β-carotene, while higher intakes of calcium, fats, and certain vitamins were noted in the patients. Food intake consistency, swallowing difficulties, and mouth opening significantly influenced green vegetable intake, whereas sex and the number of functional teeth impacted cereal intake. Conclusions: The HNC survivors were rehabilitated with MFP; however, their nutritional intake differed from that of healthy subjects. The significance of swallowing rehabilitation, appropriate food preparation, exercises to enhance mouth opening, and the preservation of functional teeth has been emphasized as critical factors influencing diet in head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors. Additionally, the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to nutritional care for these individuals is underscored.

Chip defect detection is a crucial aspect of the semiconductor production industry, given its significant impact on chip performance. This paper proposes a lightweight neural network with dual decoding paths for LED chip segmentation, named LDDP-Net. Within the LDDP-Net framework, the receptive field of the MobileNetv3 backbone is modified to mitigate information loss. In addition, dual decoding paths consisting of a coarse decoding path and a fine-grained decoding path in parallel are developed. Specifically, the former employs a straightforward upsampling approach, emphasizing macro information. The latter is more detail-oriented, using multiple pooling and convolution techniques to focus on fine-grained information after deconvolution. Moreover, the integration of intermediate-layer features into the upsampling operation enhances boundary segmentation. Experimental results demonstrate that LDDP-Net achieves an mIoU (mean Intersection over Union) of 90.29% on the chip dataset, with parameter numbers and FLOPs (Floating Point Operations) of 2.98 M and 2.24 G, respectively. Comparative analyses with advanced methods reveal varying degrees of improvement, affirming the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Biodiversity is incredibly important for the myriad ecosystem services it provides, especially for coastal nations such as The Bahamas. However, the newly implemented access and benefit sharing (ABS) regime is undermining scientific research, which is essential to effectively manage and conserve the country’s biodiversity. Key challenges include a poorly drafted legislation with punitive damages (financial and criminal), an overly bureaucratic and dysfunctional permitting process, and cost-prohibitive registration fees that are unsustainable for most researchers and organizations. As a result, the newly implemented ABS regime is driving the demise of academic and conservation research needed to protect the country’s biodiversity, diverting funding away from The Bahamas, jeopardizing relationships with the international scientific community, reducing its capacity to advance science innovation, and impeding much needed experiential learning opportunities for Bahamian students and professionals. A critical solution under the current permitting regime is the need to distinguish between commercial and non-commercial research in the regulatory framework and provide separate accommodations for the same. Furthermore, countries that consider establishing national ABS frameworks are advised to thoroughly engage with all relevant stakeholders through a transparent and consultative process during ABS design and implementation. This will help to ensure that the resulting legislation and policies do not unnecessarily obstruct the research needed for biodiversity conservation and natural resource management.

Background: Daily-use products, including personal care products, household products, and dietary supplements, often contain ingredients that raise concerns regarding harmful chemical exposure. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) found in daily-use products are associated with numerous adverse health effects. Methods: This pilot study explores the relationship between concentrations of EDCs in urine samples and products used 24 h prior to sample collection, and ingredients of concern in those products, in 140 adults of reproductive age in Northern Nevada. Results: Having higher numbers of products and ingredients of concern, especially in the personal care category, was associated with higher levels of mono-(-ethyl-5-carboxypentyl) phthalate (MECPP). Similarly, taking more supplements was associated with higher levels of methylparaben (MePB). In contrast, using household products with more ingredients of concern was associated with lower levels of monobutyl phthalate (MBP). Generally, women used more products, were exposed to more ingredients of concern and had higher urinary metabolites than men. Participants who rated themselves as being in poor/fair health were exposed to more personal care and supplement ingredients of concern than those in better health. Interestingly, those in excellent health also took supplements with more ingredients of concern. Conclusions: Greater product use and more ingredients of concern are associated with urinary metabolites of known EDCs and self-ratings of poor health. Women and people who take supplements are at greater risk, and even people who consider themselves to be healthy can be highly exposed. More education among the general public is needed to make people aware of the presence of these chemicals in their everyday products so they can make efforts to avoid them.

Currently, research on the rotational modulation of dual-axis inertial navigation for isolated carrier motion does not provide sufficient solutions for the compensation of the gyroscope scale factor error caused by the Earth’s rotation. Moreover, it is primarily applied to ships with low maneuverability and has not yet been implemented in the field of pure inertial guidance weapons. A dual-axis inertial isolation rotation modulation method is proposed to address this issue, taking into account the application characteristics of long-endurance guided weapons. An analysis of the system error characteristics under the coupling of multiple error sources acting on IMU was conducted, and it was found that the angular velocity of the inertial isolation carrier can significantly reduce the output error of the IMU. A dual-axis inertial isolation shaft system installation error compensation algorithm was designed, and an improvement was made based on the traditional sixteen-sequence rotation scheme to compensate for the projection components of the Earth’s rotation and carrier motion on the inner and outer frame rotation axes, achieving the inertial isolation rotation modulation function of dual-axis inertial navigation. Based on the attitude changes in long-range guided weapons, Monte Carlo simulation verification was conducted, and the results showed that this scheme can improve inertial navigation accuracy by 10% to 20%.

Orodispersible thin film (ODF) is an innovative dosage form that allows for adjustable dosing and improved patient compliance. It is administered by mouth, where it dissolves, making it suitable for children. Objectives: The aim of the study was to develop and characterize an optimal ODF formulation containing equivalent hydrocortisone at 0.5 mg/cm2 using the solvent-casting method. A stability-indicating assay for the simultaneous quantification of hydrocortisone and hydrocortisone 21-hemissucinate (HMS) was developed. ODFs were characterized by organoleptic properties and by testing for uniformity of mass, content, stability, thickness, and dissolution. Results: When optimized, ODF is thin, flexible, and transparent, making it suitable for production in hospital pharmacies using standard equipment. In contrast to the water-insoluble hydrocortisone, the HMS-loaded cast gel successfully satisfied the tests, including content uniformity. Disintegration appeared acceptable as compared to the commercial grade ondansetron ODF (Setofilm®). The physicochemical stability of the active ingredients (i.e., HMS, hydrocortisone) contained in the ODF at 0.5 mg/cm2 is demonstrated for at least 84 days at 23 °C. Conclusion: The ODF formulated with the water-soluble hydrocortisone prodrug HMS allows accurate drug level to be achieved, thus opening up new opportunities for use in pediatric patients.

Background: This study examined the prevalence of mental health issues among Paraguayan researchers and their relationships with emotional regulation and psychosocial factors. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 235 researchers was conducted using validated instruments: the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21); the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ); and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). Sociodemographic, academic, and behavioral variables were also analyzed. Results: Findings revealed significant rates of depression (26.4%), anxiety (30.6%), and stress (32.3%), with female researchers reporting nearly twice the rates of anxiety and stress compared to males. Researchers with doctoral degrees exhibited lower anxiety levels, emphasizing the protective role of advanced academic qualifications. Conversely, younger and early-career researchers were more vulnerable to psychological distress. High job demands and emotional dysregulation were strongly associated with poorer mental health outcomes, while hazardous alcohol consumption and low physical activity further exacerbated risks. Conclusions: These findings highlight the urgent need for institutional reforms to prioritize mental health and well-being in academic environments. By advancing the understanding of occupational health in resource-limited settings, this study provides actionable recommendations to improve the working conditions and mental health of researchers in Paraguay and beyond.

The globalization of electric vehicle development and production is a significant goal. The availability of charging stations helps to encourage the global transition to electric vehicles, which may lead to a decrease in traditional fuel consumption. Nevertheless, the rise in the number of electric vehicles is accompanied by sustainability issues, such as managing the grid’s electrical demand, building more charging stations, and providing electricity from renewable resources in an efficient and sustainable manner, especially in Saudi Arabia. This work focused on three challenges regarding the installation of fast charging stations (FCSs) for electric vehicles (EVs) on highways. The first challenge is choosing optimal locations on highways to address the range of anxiety of EV drivers. The second challenge is to fuel these FCSs using renewable resources, such as photovoltaic (PV) panels, to make FCSs sustainable. The last challenge is to design FCSs by considering both highway driving behavior and the available renewable energy resources in order to cover charging demand. All of these challenges should be considered while planning the EV charging infrastructure of Saudi highways from both technical and economic perspectives. Thus, using the HOMER® Grid software (version 1.10.1 June 2023), locations on Saudi Arabian highways were selected based on the renewable resources of several roads that support a large number of vehicles traveling on them. These roads were the Makkah to Riyadh, Makkah to Abha, Riyadh to Dammam, Riyadh to NEOM, and Jeddah to NEOM roads. Electric vehicle charging stations with a capacity of 200 kW, 300 kW, and 500 kW were designed on these roads based on their natural renewable resources, which is PV energy. These roads are the most important roads in the Kingdom and witness heavy traffic. An economic study of these stations was carried out in addition to considering their efficiency. This study revealed that the 500 kW station is ideal for charging electric vehicles, with an annual energy production of 3,212,000 kWh. The 300 kW station had better efficiency but higher capital expenses. The 200 kW station could charge 6100 vehicles annually. The three stations on the Makkah to Riyadh, Makkah to Abha, and Riyadh to Dammam roads can charge 65,758 vehicles annually. The total cost of the project was USD 2,786,621, with the 300 kW plant having the highest initial investment, which can be potentially justified due to its higher power output. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the project costs and the potential returns of using solar power plants for charging electric vehicles.

The healthcare sector in India has experienced significant transformations owing to the advancement in technology and infrastructure. Despite these transformations, there are major challenges to address critical issues like insufficient healthcare infrastructure for the country’s huge population, limited accessibility, shortage of skilled professionals, and high-quality care. Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven solutions have the potential to lessen the stress on India’s healthcare system; however, integrating trustworthy AI in the sector remains challenging due to ethical and regulatory constraints. This study aims to critically review the current status of the development of AI systems in Indian healthcare and how well it satisfies the ethical and legal aspects of AI, as well as to identify the challenges and opportunities in adoption of trustworthy AI in the Indian healthcare sector. This study reviewed 15 articles selected from a total of 1136 articles gathered from two electronic databases, PubMed and Google Scholar, as well as project websites. This study makes use of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). It finds that the existing studies mostly used conventional machine learning (ML) algorithms and artificial neural networks (ANNs) for a variety of tasks, such as drug discovery, disease surveillance systems, early disease detection and diagnostic accuracy, and management of healthcare resources in India. This study identifies a gap in the adoption of trustworthy AI in Indian healthcare and various challenges associated with it. It explores opportunities for developing trustworthy AI in Indian healthcare settings, prioritizing patient safety, data privacy, and compliance with ethical and legal standards.

L-theanine, a non-protein amino acid naturally occurring in tea leaves, is recognized for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Despite its known benefits, the mechanisms by which L-theanine influences lifespan extension remain poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of L-theanine on the lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans and explored the underlying mechanisms. Our findings indicate that L-theanine significantly diminishes the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are biomarkers closely linked to aging and age-related diseases. Through an AGE-level analysis, we observed that L-theanine, when administered during early adulthood, notably extended the lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans under both normal and high-glucose-induced stress conditions. L-theanine enhanced the lifespan under typical conditions and provided protective effects against high-glucose-induced stress. A further analysis demonstrated that L-theanine extends the lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans by modulating the DAF-2/DAF-16 insulin-like signaling pathway and reducing the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). In summary, this study identified L-theanine as a potential anti-aging intervention that extends the lifespan by reducing AGE accumulation and regulating insulin-like signaling pathways. These findings provide new insights for developing anti-aging strategies and lay the groundwork for further research on the potential benefits of L-theanine in mammals. Future studies could explore the molecular mechanisms, test L-theanine in mammalian models, and assess the long-term side effects.

Background/Objectives: A wide range of syphilis-related pregnancy complications are encountered in clinical practice. Active surveillance of the epidemiological situation in different countries and a series of retrospective data analyses allow for a comprehensive assessment of the feasible consequences of syphilis infection during pregnancy. The negative effects of infection on reproductive health are also described. Risk-increasing factors (inadequate or late treatment, partner coinfection) and protective factors (timely diagnostics and treatment) are distinguished. The importance of adequate and timely management as well as the accessibility of healthcare and socioeconomic status, which influence health outcomes, are stressed. This article presents a rare case of untreated syphilis infection during pregnancy. The infection was diagnosed during the first antenatal visit; how-ever, treatment was not initiated. At the 33rd week of gestation, the patient was admitted to the hospital because of sparse bloody vaginal discharge. Following sudden fetal hypoxia, an urgent cesarean section was performed at 33 weeks of gestation. A preterm newborn was delivered in critical condition, and congenital syphilis was diagnosed. Methods: We searched the PubMed, Cochrane, and MeSH databases using the key search terms “treponema pallidum”, “sexually transmitted infections”, “pregnancy”, “congenital infection”, “syphilis”, and “congenital syphilis”, as well as their combinations. A total of 28 papers published over a ten-year period were included in the literature review. A clinical case was analyzed. Results: The impact of syphilis on pregnancy is quite evident. Our case showcased one of the most common impacts, i.e., premature birth, of congenital infections with associated bacterial meningitis, respiratory distress syndrome, multiple organ damage, and insufficient weight. Such associations with many adverse pregnancy outcomes as well as congenital syphilis and neonatal defects are often avoidable. Conclusions: Considering the potential consequences of infections, the issue of sexually transmitted diseases remains relevant, and improving diagnostic and treatment opportunities becomes of paramount importance as cases increase.

Narrowband active noise control (NANC) systems are extensively used to cancel narrowband noise. Direct, parallel, and direct–parallel NANC systems use nonacoustic sensors to measure rotational speeds, and a bank of signal generators then produces synchronized sinusoidal waveforms as reference signals corresponding to the fundamental frequency of the undesired noise. The performance of direct NANC systems is based on the frequency difference between two adjacent reference input sinusoids. Parallel NANC systems apply several sinewave generators and two-weight adaptive filters in parallel to attenuate these narrowband components. Conventional direct–parallel NANC systems split these sinusoids into several mutually exclusive sets such that the distance between frequencies within sets is maximized. This paper proposes an improved direct–parallel NANC system in which reference sinusoidal signals are separated by amplitude to enhance efficiency and improve noise reduction performance. Several experiments were conducted using a muffler model to verify the performance of the proposed NANC system.

The objective of this study was to analyze treatment approaches and outcomes according to patients’ perspectives for patients with indeterminate spinal instability caused by neoplastic lesions. Data were collected from 31 patients with a total of 147 spinal neoplastic lesions, 29 of whom had lesions classified as indeterminate. These lesions were divided into two groups: the low indeterminate group (SINS 7–9) and the high indeterminate group (SINS 10–12). Conservative treatment was the primary approach (93%), resulting in improvement in 59% of cases, stability in 22%, and asymptomatic outcomes in 19%. No significant differences in self-reported outcomes were found between surgical and non-surgical treatments (p = 0.98, p = 0.18). Surgery was reserved for patients with severe pain or impending neurological compromise. Our findings suggest that conservative management is a viable option for most patients with indeterminate spinal instability caused by neoplastic lesions, provided pain and neurological stability are adequately controlled.

In recent years, large-scale point cloud semantic segmentation has been widely applied in various fields, such as remote sensing and autonomous driving. Most existing point cloud networks use local aggregation to abstract unordered point clouds layer by layer. Among these, position embedding serves as a crucial step. However, current methods of position embedding have limitations in modeling spatial relationships, especially in deeper encoders where richer spatial positional relationships are needed. To address these issues, this paper summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of mainstream position embedding methods and proposes a novel Hybrid Offset Position Encoding (HOPE) module. This module comprises two branches that compute relative positional encoding (RPE) and offset positional encoding (OPE). RPE combines explicit encoding to enhance position features through attention, learning position bias implicitly, while OPE calculates absolute position offset encoding by considering differences with grouping embeddings. These two encodings are adaptively mixed in the final output. The experiment conducted on multiple datasets demonstrates that our module helps the deep encoders of the network capture more robust features, thereby improving model performance on various baseline models. For instance, PointNet++ and PointMetaBase enhanced with HOPE achieved mIoU gains of 2.1% and 1.3% on the large-scale indoor dataset S3DIS area-5, 2.5% and 1.1% on S3DIS 6-fold, and 1.5% and 0.6% on ScanNet, respectively. RandLA-Net with HOPE achieved a 1.4% improvement on the large-scale outdoor dataset Toronto3D, all with minimal additional computational cost. PointNet++ and PointMetaBase had approximately only a 0.1 M parameter increase. This module can serve as an alternative for position embedding, and is suitable for point-based networks requiring local aggregation.

Developing novel antiviral drugs has always been a significant forefront in biological medicine research. Antiviral drugs can be extracted, purified, and synthesized from various biological sources and by different methods. However, they are less explored in veterinary medicine for animal viruses. This research primarily selected feline calicivirus (FCV) to screen the novel antiviral drug against animal viruses. A preliminary screening from a natural product library was conducted, with subsequent assessments to ascertain their toxicity levels and antiviral capabilities. The results showed that decitabine and alprostadil were effective in reducing FCV replication. The decitabine (5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine) was selected for antiviral mechanism investigation. Decitabine has been proven to modulate gene expression through its demethylating effect. Thus, we carried out further experiments and found that decitabine inhibited the FCV by enhancing the transcription of the feline Retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I) gene. Moreover, we also validated the same antiviral effect and mechanism of decitabine against the canine influenza virus (CIV). In summary, this study unveils the antiviral role of decitabine against FCV and CIV and provides evidence and novel insights into the demethylation drug-mediated antiviral effect for animal RNA viruses.

The efficient acquisition and processing of large-scale terrain data has always been a focal point in the field of photogrammetry. Particularly in complex mountainous regions characterized by clouds, terrain, and airspace environments, the window for data collection is extremely limited. This paper investigates the use of airborne millimeter-wave InSAR systems for efficient terrain mapping under such challenging conditions. The system’s potential for technical application is significant due to its minimal influence from cloud cover and its ability to acquire data in all-weather and all-day conditions. Focusing on the key factors in airborne InSAR data acquisition, this study explores advanced route planning and ground control measurement techniques. Leveraging radar observation geometry and global SRTM DEM data, we simulate layover and shadow effects to formulate an optimal flight path design. Additionally, the study examines methods to reduce synchronous ground control points in mountainous areas, thereby enhancing the rapid acquisition of terrain data. The results demonstrate that this approach not only significantly reduces field work and aviation costs but also ensures the accuracy of the mountain surface data generated by airborne millimeter-wave InSAR, offering substantial practical application value by reducing field work and aviation costs while maintaining data accuracy.
