    She was visible in the room but invisible online. A client said to me recently, “In person, people know who I am and what I bring. But online? You’d never know it.” And she was right. In person it was clear she had decades of credibility. She was the person people turned to when decisions needed to be made, things needed to get done, problems solved, or trust established. Her peers knew it. Her clients knew it. Her team knew it. But when someone Googled her, her LinkedIn profile came up, and the message simply didn’t match. 📉 A profile that undersold her expertise. 📉 Inconsistent or non-existent activity. 📉 A digital first impression that didn’t reflect the reputation she’d earned. And here is the challenge with this - people don’t separate offline from online anymore. ✨ The client meeting you tomorrow has already looked you up today. ✨ The board member you’re pitching to has already scanned your profile. ✨ The graduate considering your firm has already checked your team’s presence. ✨ The investor you’re meeting next week has already searched your name. ✨ The client referral you haven’t even met yet has already formed an impression.     I'm tired of hearing PR = traditional media. Most agencies are getting it wrong too. 🙃 It isn’t… The NY Times The WSJ  <Insert any other big-name publication> people get excited about Even if you land in a top-tier publication, chances are people will read about it like you are right now - on their LinkedIn feed - rather than the actual media platform where it was published. These traditional platforms may provide varying degrees of credibility, but they don't provide distribution. Today, EVERYTHING is media. Here’s what that might look like: Targeted Content: - Niche Podcasts: Identify the specific podcast your ideal CIO (Chief Information Officer),  CMO (Chief Marketing Officer), or whoever listens to based on their industry and interests. These podcasts are GOLD for moving prospects from awareness to consideration. - Curated Newsletters: Seek out targeted Substack newsletters relevant to your niche, not just "gems." Think "Bankless" for crypto enthusiasts or "The Information" for tech insiders. - Engaging Collaborations: Partner with influencers who genuinely understand your audience and know how to engage them on platforms like Instagram Live. Look for influencers who spark conversations and promote meaningful interactions. - LinkedIn Fireside Chats: Host live-streamed chats with industry leaders and your CEO, and top clients. This adds credibility and attracts a wider audience. - Leveraging Trends: Create TikTok accounts or tie into those that creatively engage with relevant trends and topics specific to your industry. Interactive & Community-Driven: - Virtual Conferences: Participate in or host virtual conferences that attract your target audience, offering valuable content and networking opportunities. - Twitch Streams: Consider live-streaming on Twitch for real-time interaction, especially if your target market is tech-savvy or in the gaming industry. - Reddit AMAs: Host Reddit AMAs (Ask Me Anything) on relevant subreddits to directly engage with your audience and answer their questions in an informal setting. - Pinterest Boards: Create curated Pinterest boards around themes your target market actively searches for, showcasing your brand's expertise and visual appeal. Content with Reach & Impact: - YouTube Channels: These channels have content optimized for search, and one interview alone can drive targeted traffic. - Data-Driven Insights: Prioritize creating content backed by data and industry insights that your target market craves, like reports, white papers, or infographics. Remember: If you aren't seeing the results you want with PR, it's almost ALWAYS one of two things. I've always believed that genuine relationships aren't built by chasing metrics but by sharing authentically and engaging with curiosity. For me writing wasn't a strategy. It was a passion. And it was through this authenticity that meaningful connections and opportunities naturally followed. Here’s what I’ve learned about building relationships that last: ✅ Be intentional with connections. Don’t just add people - connect with those who align with your values and aspirations. ✅ Personalize your approach. Whether it’s a message or a comment, show genuine interest. Avoid generic outreach. ✅ Give before you ask. Share insights, offer support, or introduce someone valuable - without expecting anything in return. ✅ Consistent engagement matters. Comment thoughtfully, celebrate milestones, and keep conversations alive. ✅ Bridge online and offline. A virtual coffee chat or meeting at an industry event can turn a digital contact into a real-life ally. ✅ Leverage trends.     You ever catch yourself on camera and cringe? 😅 That was me, sitting in the virtual greenroom before EVENTASTIC with GURU Media Hub. I clicked into the tab, lounging all the way back in my chair, with my camera pointing up at me. Y'all. I. Look. ROUGH. 😳 I immediately sat up, which helped a little bit (the middle photo). But the real change came from sitting up properly, adjusting my camera angle to be more straight-on, and holding just a bit of tension in my face. I look happier, healthier, and more engaged. 🙌 These screenshots are literally 2 minutes apart across all 3 images, with the same lighting, same laptop positioning (ie: I didn't put my laptop on a riser or significantly change the distance on the table), and same mental state (ie: not listening to music, talking about a spicy topic, or reading a heady page). Which of these people do YOU want to talk to? When we talk about showing up with "presence", looking "trustworthy", and staying "engaged" in a virtual environment, this little series is the perfect example of how small changes make a huge difference. Nitty gritty tips: - Sit facing a window to take advantage of the natural light - Point your camera straight-on or slightly down to ensure you're eye-level with the camera - Sit up straight, and frame yourself in the center of the video screen to include your chest, entire face, and a bit of space above your head (PS - My friend Lorraine K. And in a world where 82% of people trust leaders who have a visible presence online (LinkedIn, Edelman Trust Barometer), staying invisible is no longer an option. Here’s why personal branding is non-negotiable for high-authority leaders: 1️⃣ People trust leaders, not logos. Your corporate brand can only go so far.
