Female Engagement

At JudoScotland, our strategy centers on the principle of “Judo for All.” This commitment drives our efforts to increase the participation of women and girls in judo, both recreationally and competitively, and to foster greater gender balance within our community.

Scotland has a proud legacy of female judoka who have competed at the highest levels internationally, with many achieving outstanding success. From supporting elite athletes to welcoming young girls taking their first steps into the sport, we are dedicated to creating the best opportunities for women and girls across the country to experience the benefits of judo.

Our Female Engagement is built on four key themes:

  • Listening to Female Voices
  • Growing Participation
  • Developing our Workforce
  • Cultivating an Inclusive Culture

Judo Girls Rise

The Judo Girls Rise Fund aims to expand the involvement of girls and women in judo by providing resources, training, and financial support. As women remain underrepresented in the sport, this initiative focuses on broadening judo’s reach to encourage more female participation across Scotland.

A core objective of the fund is to enhance female representation both on and off the mat. By supporting female athletes as well as women in leadership roles, such as coaching, the fund fosters a more inclusive and empowering environment within judo.

For more information on how to get involved, please contact Laura Kirkhouse.

Fab Little Bag Partnership

JudoScotland is proud to partner with FabLittleBag to address period stigma and ensure female athletes have access to free period products. Through this collaboration, FabLittleBag provides Coach’s Bags filled with essential period products and disposal bags, distributed across clubs and all stages of the JudoScotland talent pathway. This initiative is part of our broader commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where period management is accessible, helping to remove barriers that can discourage girls and women from participating in sports.

By equipping clubs and events with these resources, we aim to support girls and women in staying active in judo, addressing a key factor contributing to drop-off in participation during the teenage years.
