Judo Coaching

Every coach is required to keep themselves valid, once you have successfully completed your coaching qualification there is a requirement for all coaches to hold a First Aid certificate, Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport certificate, be a member of the PVG scheme and be a member of the governing body JudoScotland; as well as attending a required number of Continued Professional Development (CPD) courses within a pre-determined period.

Coaching Resources

UKCC Level 1

For potential and trainee coaches, the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) Level 1 qualification will get you started:

  • Enables individuals to work towards becoming an Assistant Coach
  • Must be 16 years old or over
  • Minimum of a 2nd Kyu (blue belt)
  • Duration is 2 days with additional 1 day assessment
  • Introduction to coaching theory and technical skills of judo
  • Provided with DVD and judo literature
  • Participants must also complete a First Aid qualification (HSE) and a Safeguarding and Protecting Children Workshop for your BJA licence to coach.
  • Following the successful completion of this coaching course, you will be awarded a formal qualification from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

Please note funding applications must be submitted to Sportscotland at least 4 weeks prior to the course commencing. 

UKCC Level 2

For Level 1 qualified coach, BJA club & BJA senior club coaches, you can start working towards your UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) Level 2 qualification:

  • Ideal for those wishing to work towards becoming a club coach
  • Able start a club
  • Must be over 17 years old
  • Minimum grade of 1st Kyu (Brown belt)
  • Duration is 4 days with additional 1 day assessment
  • Increases your depth of judo skills’ knowledge
  • Provided with DVD and judo literature
  • Participants must also complete a First Aid qualification (HSE) and a Safeguarding and Protecting Children Workshop for your BJA licence to coach.
  • Following the successful completion of all coaching courses, you will be awarded a formal qualification from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

UKCC Level 3

All candidates must:

  • be at least 20 years of age
  • hold a minimum of grade 1st Dan
  • BJA members must hold a current BJA Level 2 or BJA Level 3 Coach Award (non BJA members must hold a UKCC Level 2 Award)

The UKCC – Level 3 in Coaching Judo is a 1st4sport Award which looks at developing coaches who work with competitive players. The programme is based on planning an annual programme which focuses on the holistic approach to training the whole player. Areas that the coach will explore are the competitive, technical, tactical, physical, psychological and lifestyle needs of the judo player.

Due to the nature of this award, we are looking for coaches already working with players 11 years of age and above, who currently hold the minimum grade of green belt and who participate in national level championships. Coaches are being asked to provide a coaching CV and a video example of their coaching to support their applications.

Currently valid BJA Level 2 and BJA Level 3 Coaches are eligible to apply to be considered for this programme provided that they fully meet the eligibility requirements. Coaches from other judo organisations are eligible to apply to be considered for this programme provided that they fully meet the eligibility requirements and hold a UKCC – Level 2 in Coaching Judo.

JudoScotland coaches may be able to get help with funding so please contact the Education & Development team at JudoScotland for advice. Places are limited so please apply early.

UKCC Level 4

This course is run in partnership with British Judo and Sheffield Hallam University. The current course is a PgDip in Advanced Sports Coaching Practice and takes two years to complete. There is and option of completing a third year to gain a MSc qualification which equates to a British Judo Level 5 in Coaching Judo.
