If you’re a collector, you might know that egg cups have been around since approximately 3 A.D. However, most Americans aren’t as familiar with this handy egg holder as their European counterparts. If you’re looking for a way to enjoy a soft-boiled egg for breakfast, an egg cup is the perfect accessory for your table.
After soft boiling your egg, place the larger end into the cup. To open it, hold the egg and cup in one hand and, using a table knife, strike near the top to break the shell. Once the shell is broken you can “flip” the top of the egg open. To do this, hold the egg and egg cup with your thumb on the opposite side of the egg. Gently work your knife into the crack, and when it nears your thumb, flip the top of the shell and egg off. If the end result is a bit messy, don’t worry. Practice is said to make perfect, though even those who enjoy a soft-boiled egg every morning may make a bit of a mess, too.
You may also want to purchase a specialty spoon to scoop your egg out of the shell while it’s standing in your egg cup. Before you scoop, make sure you clean up the top of the egg to ensure you don’t scoop out any pieces of broken shell, too. From collectible egg cups to those for daily use, you’ll find dozens of egg cup styles and designs right here on Houzz.
