End of An Era

About 14 of the top 50 TV broadcasts in 2024 were exclusive to pay TV bundle services, according to data from Nielsen, all of them football games on Fox or ESPN. The Oscars also cracked the top 100. Come next year, that number will be 0 of 50. Every single thing on Nielsen’s most watched list will be available in a stand-alone streamer in addition to the big bundles. Full report.

Super Bowl Touchdown

The Fox Sports telecast on Feb. 9 averaged 127.7 million viewers across all platforms, according to final figures from Nielsen and internal Fox data (that’s up from 126 million in preliminary estimates). That’s the second straight year the Super Bowl has an all-time viewing record in the United States. The game is up about about 3 percent compared to last year’s record-setting 123.7 million viewers on CBS (which accounted for 120.25 million of those viewers) and other platforms. Fox also says the game set a Super Bowl streaming record with 13.6 million viewers on its free streaming platform, Tubi, and 14.5 million including NFL digital platforms, along with 1.87 million viewers for the Spanish-language telecast on Telemundo and Fox Deportes.

DATA SPOTLIGHT

Disney and YouTube In Close Race for Overall TV Viewing Crown

Disney’s brands saw about 11.2 percent of overall TV viewing in the United States, just ahead of YouTube’s 11.1 percent share, per Nielsen‘s Media Distributor Gauge for December. Having the most-viewed TV series of 2024, Bluey, which tallied 55.62 billion minutes watched last year, certainly helped. And, in fact, all five of the top five most-viewed series of 2024 — Grey’s Anatomy, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers and NCIS among them — were all available to watch on a Disney platform.
