This past weekend saw sprint car racing’s grandaddy of them all, the Knoxville Nationals, take place. Considered one of, if not the, most prestigious dirt track race in the United States each year, the event stands out for many reasons. Among them is a unique format used to determine which of the 106 entries competing over four nights of action make Saturday night’s finale.

Opinions vary, not just on the Knoxville Nationals format, but on qualifying formats for racing in general.
