TRAIL

A plaque that was bolted to a boulder on the Appalachian Trail in 1935 went missing for more than 40 years after being stolen. The plaque was found in 1994 and donated to the Appalachian Trail Museum in Pine Grove Furnace in 2010.

As thru-hikers hike north on the Appalachian Trail, they greatly look forward to reaching the halfway point of their journey. As the trail has developed since its completion in 1937, those hikers have ample opportunity to experience their feeling of accomplishment of having completed half of the trail.

As northbound hikers complete the state of Virginia, which contains nearly one-fourth of the trail, many have experienced the ‘Virginia Blues’. Most have spent more than a month making it through the state and are ready to start looking forward to New England and what lies ahead.
