About this audiobook

Some will try to trap her in hopes of harnessing her dark power. Others will seek to end her, deeming it too terrible to risk. In the end, he will destroy them all—because Quinn is his weapon, and he plans to keep it that way.

Lazarus was warned that Quinn's power might be too great, even for him, but nothing prepared him for the truth of it until she held a dagger over him, and he was powerless to stop it. Now at odds with himself, the future king of Norcasta must find a way to regain control of his house and secure an alliance with the Pirate Queen . . . before fate tips its hand once more, and his carefully laid plans are led astray.

Quinn's loyalty is not easily won, but Lazarus has managed to do it. Now the vassal and right-hand of Lord Fierté, Quinn seeks to gain him an alliance with Ilvas all the while challenging him at every turn. With the Cisean tribes won over, and the blood heirs behind them, Quinn expects this to be an easy task, but soon finds herself entangled in a web of lies.

Forced to gamble with her life—and the lives of her comrades—Quinn must make a choice that will either save or doom them all.

The story is unique and the writing is top notch, love the characters & their development. I would’ve given 5 stars except for the narration.
The narrator’s interpretation of punctuation at the end of sentences was not great. When she spoke as a character, it was clear when the sentence ended. No problem. But when she was describing a scene, the intonation at the end of sentences lifted up. More like there was a comma rather than a period. It was weird, and after a while it was annoying. I think this series would be less frustrating as a read than a listen. But I listen to a lot of audiobooks, so I’m a picky listener.

Trigger warning for SA in this series, it’s a main theme, but it is not experienced by any narrators, only ever observed with minimal graphic details to the best of my memory. I enjoyed the series, main character is morally grey white adult female, spice level for the series overall is probably a 2.5, reaching its peak around the 2nd or 3rd book. This takes place in a world a bit like lord of the ring or GOT, but with unique qualities I liked. Not quite enemies to lovers, more like clashing personalities with a dose of hatred and forced proximity with an undercurrent of sexual tension and dominance struggle turns into love and respect?
