Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 49, Murray County Central 45

SLAYTON – In a low-scoring effort, Murray County Central fell short to Red Rock Conference opponent Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Thursday night.

With the loss, the Rebels fell to 8-3 while the Knights fell to 8-2 following the anticipated area matchup.

Neither team shot particularly well from the floor, with MCC going just 36% from the field and R-T-R 30%. The Knights outrebounded the Rebels though 39-34 and had 13 on the offensive end.

Gavin Gillette led MCC in scoring with 18 points and hit all four of the team’s 3-pointers while Aidan Swenson added a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Hudson Schryvers totaled five assists.

The Rebels take the court again Tuesday at 5-3 Southwest Minnesota Christian while R-T-R will host Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (2-8) on Monday.

ADRIAN – Adrian/Ellsworth got the best of rival Murray County Central Friday night with a double-digit victory.

The Dragons are now 9-4 on the season with the win, dropping the Rebels’ record to 5-8. They took a double-digit halftime lead and didn’t look back after that.

Shandra Cuperus led A/E with 19 points as the team’s only player to score in double figures. Brylee Zebe and Ava Brown each added nine points, with Brown also getting 11 rebounds, and Kamry Lehnhoff had eight. Katelyn Frodermann led the team in rebounds with 12.

Taylor Larson and Ava Deacon each scored in double figures with 14 and 12 points respectively with Deacon also leading with seven rebounds. MCC shot just 23% from the field compared to over 34% for Adrian/Ellsworth and the Dragons outrebounded the Rebels 38-32.

A/E looks to keep its current four-game win streak going Monday at George-Little Rock in Iowa while the Rebels, coming off losses in three of their last four, will host Pipestone Area Tuesday.

Boys Hockey

Worthington 6, Fairmont 5 (OT)

FAIRMONT – In a dramatic back-and-forth hockey game, Worthington got its second win over Fairmont this season with a 6-5 overtime win Thursday.

The Trojans (4-10) were up 3-2 after the second period before the Cardinals managed to tie the game before the end of regulation to force overtime.

But Spenser Nickel off an assist from Anthony Jimenez ended the game less than two minutes into the extra period, scoring the goal and giving WHS the win.

Dominic Pavelko notched a hat trick for Worthington with him scoring the first three goals all in the first period. The first two were on a power play to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead six minutes into the game.

Trenton Chantharath and then Jimenez on a power play each scored goals in the second period. Nickel and Chantharath each assisted on goals twice in the game. Brody Pederson started at goalie and made 19 saves.

The Trojans will return to the Worthington Ice Arena Saturday against the 12-0-1 Waseca Bluejays in a boys/girls doubleheader.

Girls Hockey

Fairmont 8, Worthington 0

WORTHINGTON – The Worthington High School girls hockey team was shut out by Fairmont Thursday night in an 8-0 game.

The Trojans gave up four Cardinals goals in the first period and then two each in the second and third periods. They fell to 3-10 with the defeat.

Fairmont’s Lauren Bettin had a hat trick with two goals in the first period and then another in the second period. The shot-on-goal difference was pretty close, with Fairmont outscoring Worthington 19-14. Macie Mahlberg made 11 saves at the goalie position for Worthington.

Up next for the Trojans is the doubleheader Saturday at home against 6-11 South Central.
