Sports roundup: JCC, MCC basketball teams pick up wins

Murray County Central 69, Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda 27

SLAYTON – The Murray County Central boys basketball team is off to a good start through 10 games this season, capping it off with a dominant win over Heron Lake-Okebana/Fulda.

The Rebels are 8-2 and have won their last five in a row and seven of their last eight. The Coyotes meanwhile fell to 2-7 with the loss.

Maxwell Miller and Gavin Gillette each led the way for MCC offensively, scoring 15 points apiece with Hudson Schryvers and Aidan Swenson adding 10. Schryvers also led the team with seven rebounds and Carson Engelkes led with six assists.

MCC shot 40% from the field compared to just 26% for HL-O/F. The Rebels also hit 10 3-point shots with the Coyotes going 0-for-8 from behind the arc.

MCC will host Russell-Tyler-Ruthton and HL-O/F will be home for Edgerton on Thursday.

SLAYTON – MCC snapped a two-game losing skid with a double-digit victory over Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey Tuesday night.

In the 12-point win, the Rebels turned a one-point halftime deficit around in the second half, outscoring the Wolverines by 13 to improve to 5-7 record. MLA/C remains winless at 0-10

Two Rebel players scored in double figures with Ava Deacon leading the way with 13 to go along with four steals and Taylor Larson getting 11.

Kelli Miller added another nine points and Thea Schneider and Kate Blankenship scored six each. Kat Miller led with six rebounds and Kelli Miller also added a couple assists and made three 3-pointers.

Julia Brinkman paced MLA/C with a game-high 21 points.

MCC will be on the road Friday against Red Rock Conference rival Adrian/Ellsworth, who is 8-4 on the season.

Jackson County Central 77, Redwood Valley 68

JACKSON – Jackson County Central’s girls basketball team won its third-straight game Tuesday night to improve to a .500 record.

The 6-6 Huskies had lost six-straight games after starting the year 3-0 before getting back on a winning streak. Redwood Valley with the loss drops to 10-4.

The Huskies jumped out to a 18-5 lead before taking a 39-36 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Cardinals came back with a 6-0 run to take the lead. JCC then benefitted from late free throws in the game’s final 10 minutes to pull away in the end.

Senior Rylie Cother was once-again outstanding for the Huskies, leading the way for 39 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals and five assists. Teammate Zadi Farmer also stood out with 20 points, nailing all 12 of her free throws, and grabbing 10 rebounds. Madelyn Rowe added 10 points and 11 boards.

Kendall Huhnerkoch led the Cards with 22 points with Chantkiya Wabasha adding 14 points, Hailyn Ourada 12 and Cali Johnson 11.

JCC will take the court again Friday in a tough Big South Conference and Section 3AA playoff rematch with 12-1 Windom Area in Windom.

Boys Hockey

Marshall 7, Worthington 1

MARSHALL – Worthington’s boys hockey team faced Marshall on the road Tuesday night and despite taking an early 1-0 lead, fell 7-1 to the Tigers.

The Trojans are now 3-10 on the season and have lost their last three in a row, all on the road.

Senior Evan Baumgardner scored the lone goal for WHS 12 minutes and 47 seconds into the first period to give the Trojans that 1-0 lead on an assist from Anthony Jimenez. But Marshall responded with a goal about two minutes later to end the first period knotted at 1-1.

The Tigers then scored three unanswered goals in the second period and then three more in the third period to pull away. Owen Renslow scored two goals for Marshall as it outshot WHS 45-18.

Brody Pederson started at goalie for the Trojans and made 38 saves while giving up the seven goals.

The Trojans will be on the road again Thursday for a matchup with 0-9 Fairmont, a team WHS has already beaten this season.

Girls Hockey

Marshall 13, Worthington 0

MARSHALL – The Worthington Trojans went up against a tough Marshall team and were defeated in shutout fashion.

The Trojans, now 3-9 on the season, fell to the 17-1-1 Tigers in a 13-0 loss. In the game, Marshall outshot Worthington 47-5 with four goals in the first period, six in the second and then three more in the third.

Three different Tiger players scored multiple goals with Brooklyn Mauch leading the charge with four to go along with an assist. Abby Foley and Elsie Deutz each scored twice also for Marshall. Macie Mahlberg made 34 saves at goalie for Worthington.

Prior to the Marshall loss, Worthington notched its third win of the season Dec. 21 before the holiday break over Morris/Benson Area. In the 4-1 win. the Trojans saw goals being scored by Sydnie Van Briesen, Peyton Nickel, Breeta Johnson and finally a short-handed one by Madelyn Cummings

They will return home to the Worthington Ice Area Thursday for a game with Fairmont, currently 9-7-1 on the season.
