Queen Mary of Denmark wishes followers a 'peaceful and merry Christmas' as she poses for festive family portrait at Marselisborg Castle

Queen Mary of Denmark has wished royal fans a 'peaceful and Merry Christmas' as she posed alongside her family for a festive portrait on Instagram.

The royal, 52, appeared to be in high spirits as she posed next to her husband, King Frederik and their four children, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

She opted for a chic winter ensemble, donning a cream turtleneck jumper and chose to wear her brunette tresses down in a wavy blow-dry.

Her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe, 84, was also included in the heartwarming image.

The former monarch put her best fashion foot forward, donning a pink and grey tartan patterned jacket, olive green jumper and maxi skirt, along with a pair of black chunky loafers.

She wore her grey strands up in a sleek bun along with silver earrings which matched her glitzy brooch.

Fredrik's mother beamed as she looked admiringly at her grandchildren.

The portrait was posted on their official Instagram with the caption: 'From Marselisborg Castle, where the royal family is now gathered, we wish you a peaceful and happy Christmas.'

It has marked almost a year since Margrethe announced that she would be abdicating in favour of her son, Frederik, taking over the throne.

It came as a shock to the Danish public, when they learned the news during her New Year's Eve address in 2023.

Frederik officially became King of Denmark on January 14 2023, signing the paperwork for the role to be transferred over, although Margrethe has still kept her title as Queen.

The royal, 19, appears to have grown his brunette hair out longer since going to Africa for his gap year.

The future King was seen in a casual outfit with a navy blue coat and brown chinos and a pair of trainers.

The Danish teenager embarked on an 'extended stay' in East Africa, after graduating from high school earlier this year.

He revealed that he will be joining the military as an officer for the Guardhouse regiment in Slagelse in February.

Christian revealed he had enjoyed a varied and culturally rich experience so far, having worked with wildlife, built new houses and even managed to fit in football with the locals.

The Prince said while the experience was 'completely different', it would be one he never forget.

He told Instagram at the time: 'I have been in East Africa for almost three months. Everyday life down here is something completely different than at home.

'The food, the culture, the climate, the wildlife, the tasks and the people make it an experience I will never forget.

'In recent weeks I've been working with nature preservation. I'm both supervising and registering animals in the bush and taking care of the office on the farm. As the video shows, I get really close to the wild animals when they have their GPS collars replaced during anaesthesia.

'Learning a lot about life down here and have helped build new houses for the employees. And then I played some good football matches with the locals.

'But I am also starting to look forward to returning home to the family in Denmark and celebrating Christmas in a few weeks.

'And now I'm looking forward to a new challenge in February. I'll start working as a military officer at the Guardhouse regiment in Slagelse.'

Princess Josephine, 13, looked stylish in a grey button up coat, which she paired with grey flared jeans and black shoes.

She wore her long golden tresses down and opted for natural makeup as she stood alongside her twin, Prince Vincent.

He also chose to wear a sophisticated attire in a dark blue high-collared jacket and similar denim trousers as his sister, along with white trainers.

Their elder sibling Princess Isabella, 17, smiled for the camera also dressed in grey denim and a cropped sand-coloured jacket.

It comes as Mary showed off her altruistic side this week as she volunteered her evening at a homeless food centre last Tuesday.

She embraced the festive spirit in a stunning snowflake jumper as she arrived at NABO Center Amager in Copenhagen to help prepare a Christmas meal.

Mary appeared in good spirits as she chatted with volunteers at the food centre for the WeShelter Food Club Event, showing off her beautiful smile.

Embracing the festive season, Mary slipped into a black and white turtle neck jumper with a snowflake design from Max Mara.

She paired the festive jumper with a stylish pair of oversized trousers in marl.

The queen opted for a lowkey makeup look with a fresh flawless base, rose tinted cheeks and a touch of mascara.

She wore her dark brunette tresses down around her shoulder and finished the look with a pair of stunning pearl earrings.

The WeShelter's Food Club - of which Mary is a patron - provides a hot meal a day to those experiencing homelessness or social disadvantage.

Joining volunteers at the NABO Centre Amager, Mary got stuck in overseeing the cooking of the Christmas meal, which in Denmark consists of roast pork and duck and boiled potatoes, red cabbage and gravy.

The kindhearted royal holds strong values in regards to combatting loneliness and social isolation and has been keenly involved in the pursuit since becoming a member of the Danish royal family in 2004.

Queen Mary became a patron of WeShelter earlier this year. The charity has been helping homeless and socially vulnerable people since 1893.

The charity has three venues, Pegasus, Offside Social Garden, and NABO Center, where they offer a hot meal for those who need it every Tuesday.

It's not the first time the queen has spent time volunteering to support the homeless. In 2026, the then princess was joined by her husband, then Prince Frederik of Denmark, to visit a breakfast café for the homeless in Copenhagen.
