The first mile is flattish but rocky and sandy so not easy to walk. High clearance vehicles also drive this part. At 1 mile you’ll take the right to start the official trail. It’s up from there. Lots of climbing and stairs but plenty of places for breaks. There’s always a line of people at the bridge but everyone takes turns to go out and take photos. It was 4 miles from the parking lot. I forgot to stop AllTrails when we got in the car.

Hard and a little sketchy at first in places but definitely worth it! Much easier coming down!

It was great! Easy trail, the final part to reach Devil’s Bridge was a bit steep but easy to do since the steps were very clear! It wasn’t crowded at all.

Loved seeing the oaks and alligator juniper along this trail, and what a treat to go in the early morning ahead of the crowds and hear all the little birds and critters, and falling leaves. This trail gets busy by 8 (on a Monday!) and by 10 there were a few cars waiting for my parking spot. I am surprised by the number of hikers who were asking directions & didn’t quite know what they were in for, so stop and chit chat with folks on trail, help a fellow hiker out! Around mile 2, the trail splits; the path forward continues on Boyton Canyon trail, but it seems someone has moved some branches across that path to discourage that route/redirect foot traffic to the right, which goes toward the caves. When you get to the foot of the subway tunnel, there’s the option to go straight up to the tunnel via a smooth & steep rock face (likely a seasonal/temporary waterfall chute). A safer way up (& definitely down) is just to the left of that: look for a natural path up. This will bring you the the middle of the line of cave systems (all worth seeing, not just the subway tunnel!), and then you will walk back along the cliff ledge to the subway. This doesn’t take any longer/is not more mileage, but is definitely safer.
