On March 21, 2024, Starbucks announced a voluntary recall of over 440,000 mugs that were sold in a holiday gift set. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posted the recall notice following 12 consumer complaints of overheating and breaking.

According to the notice, these mugs are made of ceramic material with a metallic coating, and it was discovered that “‘if microwaved or filled with extremely hot liquid, the mugs can overheat or break, posing burn and laceration hazards.”

As of now, there have been 12 reported incidents of the mugs breaking due to overheating, which resulted in 10 reported injuries that included 9 severe burns on the hands or fingers, a cut finger, and even one consumer that required medical attention.
