The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posted the recall notice following 12 consumer complaints of overheating and breaking. According to the notice, these mugs are made of ceramic material with a metallic coating, and it was discovered that “‘if microwaved or filled with extremely hot liquid, the mugs can overheat or break, posing burn and laceration hazards.” As of now, there have been 12 reported incidents of the mugs breaking due to overheating, which resulted in 10 reported injuries that included 9 severe burns on the hands or fingers, a cut finger, and even one consumer that required medical attention. Which Starbucks Mugs Have Been Recalled? The recalled mugs were all manufactured by Nestlé USA and sold as part of 2023 holiday Starbucks-branded gift sets. The following gift sets are subject to recall: Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and MugStarbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and MugStarbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug These recalled gift sets were sold between November 2023 and January 2024 at Target, Walmart, and Nexcom (a military retail outlet), both online and in stores. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission What to Do if You Have a Recalled Starbucks Mug Anyone who purchased a recalled Starbucks mug or set containing a recalled mug should stop using it immediately. Visit this site for instructions on how to submit a recall complaint with a photo or identifier code of the recalled item(s). You can locate the gift set identifier code on the bottom of the mug. Consumers can receive a full refund from Nestlé USA. Receipts are not required to receive a refund.
