I love feta cheese and its endless applications, whether enjoyed in a classic Greek salad or simply on its own. But when feta gets fried and drizzled with honey, it turns into something truly transcendent! Fried feta is a common appetizer in Greece, either wrapped in phyllo or coated in sesame seeds. You can take a single whole slice of feta, coat it in sesame seeds, and pan fry it that way, but I do love the extra crispiness and texture that you get when cutting the feta into fingers. Any way you cut it, this fried feta and honey dish is guaranteed to be the talk of your party.

Some tips for making this dish the best it can be:

Choose your feta wisely
Buy only real sheep's milk feta, preferably from Greece. A cow's milk feta will be too salty and will not yield the same creaminess to the dish.

Shallow fry in good olive oil
Use a quality extra virgin olive oil to gently shallow fry the feta fingers over medium-high heat. Work in batches and don't crowd the pan. If you use a good EVOO, it should never smoke as long as the temperature doesn't go off the charts.

Try a mix of seeds
Regular sesame seeds are perfectly fine to use, but if you want added interest you could mix in some black sesame seeds for a speckled look that will really bring the oohs and ahs!

Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 4 servings

  • 1 (8 ounce) slice feta cheese

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • ½ cup sesame seeds

  • 1 pinch ground black pepper to taste

  • ¼ cup olive oil

  • 2 tablespoons honey, or more to taste

Directions

  1. Slice feta into four fingers and place in the freezer for 10 minutes to help the cheese hold its shape while you prepare the other ingredients.

  2. Set out egg, flour, and sesame seeds in three separate shallow dishes. Season egg with black pepper.

  3. Pour oil into a small skillet to a depth of about 1/2-inch. Heat over medium-high heat.

  4. Remove feta from freezer and dredge each finger first in egg, then flour, egg again, followed by sesame seeds. Evenly coat all sides. Add breaded fingers to the hot oil.

  5. Cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Remove from oil and briefly drain excess oil on kitchen towel.

  6. Place feta fingers on a serving plate and drizzle with honey. Enjoy immediately while hot.
