We all have that one dessert filled with so much nostalgia, the one that can take you back in time with just one bite. Whether it’s a cake, a cookie, or a cobbler, it’s the treat that’s always on the table at holidays and family gatherings, and never fails to bring back happy memories. For many Allrecipes community members, that childhood staple dessert is called Texas Yum Yum

With a name like “Yum Yum,” this pie sounds like the product of a child’s imagination, and to be honest, it kind of tastes like it, too. The light and luscious dessert has three layers of fluffy, sweet fillings, all nestled into a crisp graham cracker crust. It’s creamy, chocolatey, and delightful, but best of all, it’s beyond easy to make.

“There’s basically nothing like it,” said one Allrecipes member. “It was always something I made with my mom and siblings too, which adds that final layer of nostalgia. 10/10.”

What Is Texas Yum Yum?

Texas Yum Yum, also known as Chocolate Yum Yum, is a layered pie with chocolate and vanilla puddings, a whipped cream cheese center, and graham cracker crust. It’s cool, creamy, and custardy, and it’s the one holiday pie you won’t need to top with whipped cream

This super simple dessert is made with Cool Whip, instant pudding mix, and cream cheese (all the building blocks of a knock-out no-bake dessert.) We don’t really know what gives this pie its “Texas” roots, but we’d guess it’s because the flavor is, as they say, “as big as Texas.”

Utilizing store-bought ingredients, this recipe comes together in no time—all you really need is 30 minutes to let the pie chill. If time isn't an issue, you can always make a homemade graham cracker crust instead, or opt for a different kind of crust altogether, like shortbread or saltine cracker.

“Substituted an Oreo cookie crumb crust for the graham cracker crust because we LOVE chocolate! This definitely was a hit and we would make it again!,” said user Angela Valles.

Our community goes crazy for this decades-old dessert, calling it “a hit with everyone” and “the most delicious dessert [they’ve] ever tasted.” So, if you haven’t added this no-bake chocolate treat to your holiday dessert menu already, don't wait another second longer.

How to Make Texas Yum Yum

If reviewers said it once, they said it 100 times: “Use a DEEP DISH PIE PLATE!” This recipe makes a ton of filling, so either use a super-sized pie crust or break the filling up into two dishes, or your pie will be literally overflowing with “Yum Yum.”

It’s best when made the day-of, so the pudding stays fresh and fluffy when it’s time to serve. And once you put it out on the table, don’t expect to have any leftovers.

To make this retro pie, start with a deep dish pre-made graham cracker crust. Whisk together milk and instant chocolate pudding mix until combined, then pour it into the bottom of the crust for the first layer.

Next, beat softened cream cheese with an electric mixer until airy, then mix in confectioners' sugar. Fold in two cups of thawed whipped topping (like Cool Whip), and spread the fluffy mixture on top of the chocolate pudding layer.

Make the final pudding layer by whisking together vanilla instant pudding mix and milk until combined, then spreading it over the cream cheese layer. Smooth another layer of whipped topping on top, then allow the pie to chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Even if you didn’t grow up on Texas Yum Yum, it’s never too late to adopt the creamy, chocolatey treat into your family holiday traditions. We don’t even mind if you call it [insert your state name] Yum Yum instead.
