Allrecipes' editorial guidelines Published on July 23, 2024 Close Photo: Shutterstock Don’t you hate it when you buy fresh produce that goes bad before you can use it all? I make a smoothie almost daily containing three big handfuls of spinach. Once a week, I buy a large-sized clamshell package full of baby spinach, and I know exactly what I need to do to keep the leafy greens from getting smelly and slimy—put them in a special container designed to prolong the freshness of produce. The container I have is plastic and has three pieces: a lid, a rectangular bin with drainage holes on the bottom and air vent controls on the sides, and a base for under the bowl so any moisture that drips through the drainage holes is contained. It really works. If I get lazy and leave the spinach in its original container, it’s usually slimy in a few days. If I transfer it to the produce keeper, it will last a week or more. I don’t recall what I specifically paid for the container, but similar ones on Amazon go for about $17. Starting July 24, Aldi will have a set of two produce keepers—very similar to what I have—for $9.99, a better bargain than the single container on Amazon. Aldi’s New Produce Keepers by Crofton You’ll find the useful Crofton Produce Keepers that prolong the life of produce and keep you from wasting both food and money in the Aldi Finds aisle—the one where you find all the great kitchen items, from copycat Lodge cast iron skillets to gadgets that chop garlic for you. Aldi/Allrecipes There are two options: a two-pack of produce keepers (10.7 x 7.1 x 3.6 inches) and a two-pack of berry keepers (7.56 x 5.1 x 2.8 inches), each priced at $9.99. Printed on each lid is a guide on whether or not to open the air vents, depending on the type of produce. I’ll be heading to Aldi when these money-saving containers go on sale to buy the berry versions. So when I come home from the farmers market with fresh blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries to eat as a snack or use in muffins and pies, they’ll stay fresher longer. Like all the home and kitchen goods in the Aldi Finds aisle, the produce keepers won’t stick around long. They’ll show up on shelves on July 24 and will most likely be gone by the following week to make room for the next batch of useful Aldi Finds. Was this page helpful? Thanks for your feedback!
