Zakspeed (German pronunciation:[ˈtsakspiːt]) is a motor racing team from Germany, founded in 1968 by Erich Zakowski and now run by his son Peter Zakowski. Their home town of Niederzissen is located not far away from the Nürburgring racetrack.
1973 to 1981: Saloon and sports car racing
In the late 1970s, Zakspeed was the official Ford team in the German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM) series, a predecessor of the current DTM. The company constructed and entered an FIAGroup 2Escort and the Group 5Capri, based on the MKIII production model. During this period, the Zakspeed team achieved a number of victories including the overall championship in 1981 with driver Klaus Ludwig (car shown left).
In the early 1980s, Zakspeed also prepared a Mustang for Ford USA's Special Vehicle Operations to race in the domestic IMSACamel GT series. The Mustang chassis was based on the Group 5 Capri.
1982 to 1989: Endurance cars and F1
In 1982, Zakspeed ran the works Ford C100Group C effort in conjunction with the factory. The Zakspeed-prepared machine was run by the works Ford Germany team with Klaus Ludwig, Manfred Winkelhock and Marc Surer at the wheel, but the car was a midfielder at best, although Jonathan Palmer and Desiré Wilson scored a 4th place overall the 1000km of Brands Hatch in 1982. Ford Germany retracted their support and one car was sold to privateers, while the other chassis was evolved by Zakspeed into the C1/4 and the C1/8, making few appearances in international racing, but becoming a front-runner in the German Interserie, where it won the championship in 1984 with Klaus Niedzwiedz.
Zakspeed was already an established racing and tuning company, working in conjunction with Ford. The team decided to enter Formula One in 1985 with their own turbo-charged engine; the factory-backed Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, and Renault teams were the only other outfits to build both their chassis and engines at this time. It was the first all-German (engine and chassis) F1 car since the Porsche 804 in 1962. The small size of the team limited it to building just two chassis during the course of the season, which also meant that only one car would be entered for contested events. For financial reasons, the team would not travel out of Europe, limiting itself to a maximum of eleven out of the sixteen Grands Prix. The 841 was designed by Paul Brown, with the 4-in-line engine designed by Norbert Kreyer. Two chassis were built, with the second only being finished in time for the French Grand Prix, the seventh round of the championship. The finished package was generally agreed to be neat and tidy (if conventional), especially in the red-and-white corporate colours of West, the team's title sponsor.
The Zakspeed 861 was a Formula One car designed by Paul Brown for the Zakspeed team and was used in both the 1986 and 1987 seasons. In 1986 its drivers were Jonathan Palmer and Huub Rothengatter. The team never employed a test driver as they simply couldn't afford one despite sponsorship from German tobacco brand West. The lack of money also meant that the engine on the car, Zakspeed's own 4 cylinder 1500/4 turbo engine which were rated at about 850bhp (634kW; 862PS) for the season, were also short on power and development compared to those at the front of the grid (Honda, Renault, BMW, TAG-Porsche and Ferrari). The team used Goodyear tyres.
Concept
The Zakspeed 861 was a single seat open wheel racing car, designed and built by the German Zakspeed team for the 1986 Formula One world championship. It was a development of the Zakspeed 841 used during the 1985 Formula One season. Changes were largely to reduce weight and complexity over its predecessor. In its second year in Formula One, the tiny Zakspeed team continued to be only competitor, other than the large factory teams of Ferrari and Renault, to design and build its own engines.
1984 October 23 - Zakspeed 841, 1st test with Manfred Winkelhock @ Nürburgring
On October 23, 1984, Manfred Winkelhock did the first test of the Zakspeed 841 at the Nürburgring, where he put in forty laps or so. It was a crucial moment as Zakspeed didn't know if this was going to be the beginning or the end of their project. With a lap time of 1m25s on DRS tyres (the fastest race lap at the European GP, held on the same circuit on october 7, was 1m23.15), Winkelhock advised Zakowski not to drop his project. "He said the chassis was light and easy to drive, and that the car handled well. I was more than relieved when he said that in comparison with the BMW, my engine should have a promising future" (From Grand Prix International #89, February 1985)

1984 - Zakspeed 841 design & construction @ Niederzissen
In July 1983, Erich Zakowski announced his project to go into F1 to just five people - Siegfried Vogel (director), Helmut Barth (technical director), Bruno Bunk (fabricator), Paul Brown (design & race engineer) and Norbert Kreyer (engine). A partition was set up in the workshop and the forty five other employees had no idea whatever of what was going on behind. Brown began his first designs in November, and by December, Barth was making a 1/5 scale model which lost no time in being put through the wind tunnel. Zakowski original intention was to race the 841 for the first time at the 1984 European GP held at the Nurburgring, but the metal workers' strike had delayed the project.
