Not a Ford Escort: The MST Mk1 | Henry Catchpole - The Driver’s Seat
In his first film for the Hagerty channel, Henry Catchpole (a tall, slightly scruffy but award-winning motoring journalist,) introduces us to his passion for cars with the MST Mk1.
For his first review, Catchpole could have reviewed a supercar, or a hyper car, or even his own Mk2 rally car (that doesn’t have an engine in it at the moment) but no--he chose a MST Mk1. The curious thing about the MST Mk1, which looks exactly like a Ford Escort Mk1, is that it isn’t actually an old car from the 1960s - it is a brand new car. Ford of Europe could do no wrong in the 1960s and 70s. And the Escort quite possibly turned out to be their crowning achievement. While many think of the Mini as a car that got Britain moving, the Mini only sold 5M cars worldwide over its entire life. The Escort sold almost 5 times that amount in a shorter period of time.

Ultimate 'Ford Escort' rally car recreation - MST Mk1 driven 50 years after historic RAC rally win
The MST Mk1 is not, legally or by name at least, a mk1 Ford Escort. But materially and mechanically it's a close match for the formative, 1970s-era, competition-specification version of one of the most famous rally cars there has ever been; and it's both brand new and road-legal.
Built by Motorsport Tools of Pwllheli, it's the work of a company that has spent years supporting, repairing and restoring historic mk1 and mk2 Escort rally cars. It exists in order to supply those who want a more habitable and usable, but still authentic-feeling, brand-new-and-yet-still-classic mk1 Escort with a car they can enjoy on the road as often as they like.

In his first film for the Hagerty channel, Henry Catchpole (a tall, slightly scruffy but award-winning motoring journalist,) introduces us to his passion for cars with the MST Mk1.
For his first review, Catchpole could have reviewed a supercar, or a hyper car, or even his own Mk2 rally car (that doesn’t have an engine in it at the moment) but no--he chose a MST Mk1. The curious thing about the MST Mk1, which looks exactly like a Ford Escort Mk1, is that it isn’t actually an old car from the 1960s - it is a brand new car. Which is why, to keep Ford’s lawyers happy, it doesn’t have a single Blue Oval badge anywhere on it and you won’t find MST (which stands for Motorsport Tools - https://mst-cars.com) calling it a Ford, or an Escort.
Semantics aside, all that really matters is that it has the wonderful induction noise of a naturally-aspirated BDG engine, the tactility of a manual gearbox and the sort of glorious rear-wheel drive handling balance, that makes you think of rally cars in a forest with Clark behind the wheel, or Mikkola in the driver’s seat.
We hope you enjoy the film as much as Henry clearly enjoyed the car. And even if you’re perplexingly indifferent to red cars with gold wheels, we suggest you check it out anyway just for Glenn Winhall’s stunning editing, and jaw-dropping drone shots of Wales.

The MST Mk1 is not, legally or by name at least, a mk1 Ford Escort. But materially and mechanically it's a close match for the formative, 1970s-era, competition-specification version of one of the most famous rally cars there has ever been; and it's both brand new and road-legal.
Built by Motorsport Tools of Pwllheli, it's the work of a company that has spent years supporting, repairing and restoring historic mk1 and mk2 Escort rally cars. It exists in order to supply those who want a more habitable and usable, but still authentic-feeling, brand-new-and-yet-still-classic mk1 Escort with a car they can enjoy on the road as often as they like.
Built out of a mix of MST's own specially designed chassis and body stampings, and competition-grade axles and driveline components of the sort you'd find on a historic rally car, the MST Mk1 is powered by a 2.0-litre, 260bhp Cosworth 'BDG' racing engine of the same family that powered Ford's 1970s rallying Escorts, which revs beyond 8000rpm and sounds ear-splittingly shrill. Our man Matt Saunders found out exactly that on roads close to the Escort's glory-days forest rally stages in Snowdonia, North Wales. Ear plugs at the ready, folks.

Jonny saw the bare 'Escort' mk1 and mk2 bodyshells being constructed, poke around the MST mk1 that is nearly completed (complete with 270bhp BDG engine) and enjoy a rare day of perfect sunshine in the North Wales mountain roads.

Three WRC world championships and a European title in just three years. These are the achievements of the Escort RS MK2 . Built on the basis of the Escort Mexico, the German version of the medium-sized car from the blue oval. Equipped with a 240 hp, 2.0-litre DOHC twin-shaft engine, produced in collaboration with Cosworth, it performed well on all kinds of surfaces. From gravel to snow to asphalt, it was homologated to participate in both the Gr.2 and Gr.4 categories.
After the official stop to production, Motorsport Tools continued to produce the car's bodywork for years, which is now on sale for £22,000. The customisation possibilities are endless, starting with the engine, which can be either 2.0L or 2.5L, both Ford Duratec.
The 2.5L, one of Ford's most iconic engines in the 1990s, with 170HP (basic) promises respectable performance for the lightweight Escort. Equipped with Mazda's 6-speed manual gearbox, AP Racing disc brakes, and ATR's adjustable ring-nut dampers, it also guarantees plenty of fun.
