William A. Henry III

William Alan Henry III (1950–1994) was an award-winning American cultural critic and author.

Career

Henry lived in North Plainfield, New Jersey as a young man. Henry graduated from Yale in 1971 and began his career in journalism in Boston, writing for the Boston Globe. His coverage of school desegregation in Boston won a (shared) Pulitzer Prize in 1975. He also wrote on the arts for the Globe, winning a second Pulitzer for his television criticism in 1980.

In the 1980s he worked as an arts critic for Time magazine, while pursuing his interests in cultural criticism and in American politics. Among his articles for Time was a story critical of the Hollywood trade newspapers in their cozy relationship in an industry town. Among his notable works were his 1984 book, Visions of America, on the American presidential campaign of that year; his 1990 video documentary of Bob Fosse, Steam Heat, which won an Emmy; and his 1992 (print) biography of Jackie Gleason, The Great One.

His final, and perhaps most notable, book was In Defense of Elitism, a work of social and cultural criticism that argued that societies and cultures might be ranked on a spectrum ranging from 'egalitarianism' to 'elitism', and that the contemporary United States had moved too far away from the latter; a view he defended with reference to college education, multiculturalism, and other topics. He died of a heart attack on June 28, 1994 while the book was coming to press.

Henry III, Margrave of Meissen

Henry III, called Henry the Illustrious (Heinrich der Erlauchte) (c. 1215 – 15 February 1288) from the House of Wettin was Margrave of Meissen and last Margrave of Lusatia (as Henry IV) from 1221 until his death; from 1242 also Landgrave of Thuringia.

Life

Born probably at the Albrechtsburg residence in Meissen, Henry was the youngest son of Margrave Theodoric I of Meissen and his wife Jutta, daughter of Landgrave Hermann I of Thuringia. In 1221 he succeeded his father as Margrave of Meissen and Lusatia, at first under guardianship of his maternal uncle, Landgrave Louis IV of Thuringia, and after his death in 1227, under that of Duke Albert I of Saxony. In 1230 he was legally proclaimed an adult.

Henry experienced his first armed combat at Balga during the 1237 Prussian Crusade led by the Teutonic Knights. In 1245 after many years of conflict with the Ascanian margraves of Brandenburg, he was forced to cede the fortresses of Köpenick, Teltow and Mittenwalde north of Lower Lusatia. In 1249 however, the Silesian duke Bolesław II the Bald granted him the eastern area around Schiedlo Castle at the Oder river, where Henry founded the town of Fürstenberg.

Henry III, Holy Roman Emperor

Henry III (28 October 1017 – 5 October 1056), called the Black or the Pious, was a member of the Salian Dynasty of Holy Roman Emperors. He was the eldest son of Conrad II of Germany and Gisela of Swabia. His father made him duke of Bavaria (as Henry VI) in 1026, after the death of Duke Henry V.

On Easter Day 1028, after his father was crowned Holy Roman Emperor, Henry was elected and crowned King of Germany in the cathedral of Aachen by Pilgrim, Archbishop of Cologne.

After the death of Herman IV, Duke of Swabia in 1038, his father gave him that duchy, as well as the kingdom of Burgundy, which Conrad had inherited in 1033. Upon the death of his father on 4 June 1039, he became sole ruler of the kingdom and was crowned emperor by Pope Clement II in Rome (1046).

Early life and reign

Henry's first tutor was Bruno, Bishop of Augsburg. On Bruno's death in 1029, Egilbert, Bishop of Freising, was appointed to take his place. In 1033, at the age of sixteen, Henry came of age and Egilbert was compensated for his services. In 1035, Adalbero, Duke of Carinthia, was deposed by Conrad, but Egilbert convinced Henry to refuse this injustice and the princes of Germany, having legally elected Henry, would not recognise the deposition unless their king did also. Henry, in accordance with his promise to Egilbert, did not consent to his father's act and Conrad, stupefied, fell unconscious after many attempts to turn Henry. Upon recovering, Conrad knelt before his son and exacted the desired consent. Egilbert was penalised dearly by the emperor.

William Albert Henry (November 10, 1914 – August 10, 1982) was an American actor working in Hollywood movies. He started as a child actor, then was a hero in B-movies (mainly westerns), and ended his career as a character actor. He also appeared in various roles on episodes of many TV series. He was a member of the John Ford Stock Company and appeared twelve times for Ford. His older brother was the character actor Thomas Browne Henry.

  Henry III was King of England from 1216 to 1272 - 56 years in total, reigning from when he was just nine to when he was 65 years old. He’s the longest serving King of the medieval era - his tenure was only beaten by George III whose reign started 544 years after Henry’s coronation. Henry was the 4th of 14 Plantagenet Kings who ruled England.He’s perhaps best known for being forced to set up an early version of Parliament and building the Westminster Abbey we know today. Henry III was King of England from 1216 to 1272 - 56 years in total, reigning from when he was just nine to when he was 65 years old. He’s the longest serving King of the medieval era - his tenure was only beaten by George III whose reign started 544 years after Henry’s coronation. Henry was the 4th of 14 Plantagenet Kings who ruled England.He’s perhaps best known for being forced to set up an early version of Parliament and building the Westminster Abbey we know today. When he was born in 1207 his father John was eight years into his own reign as King of England. Thanks to his poor leadership John was forced to sign Magna Carta, an attempt to severely limit the King’s power. John tried to overturn it, causing the Barons to declare war on him but in the midst of this, in 1216 the King died and nine-year–old Henry was crowned kingFor the first part of his reign Henry III was effectively controlled by English nobleman. When he came of age though, he wanted to prove his worth as a strong King so invaded France in 1230 hoping to reclaim the Angevin lands his father had lost. The plan failed and though he was defeated at the hands of the French, he was heavily influenced by them and modelled his own royal court on that the French monarchy’s. He favoured French courtiers and married Eleanor of Provence.

Henry was the 4th of 14 Plantagenet Kings who ruled England.He’s perhaps best known for being forced to set up an early version of Parliament and building the Westminster Abbey we know today. When he was born in 1207 his father John was eight years into his own reign as King of England. Thanks to his poor leadership John was forced to sign Magna Carta, an attempt to severely limit the King’s power. John tried to overturn it, causing the Barons to declare war on him but in the midst of this, in 1216 the King died and nine-year–old Henry was crowned kingFor the first part of his reign Henry III was effectively controlled by English nobleman. When he came of age though, he wanted to prove his worth as a strong King so invaded France in 1230 hoping to reclaim the Angevin lands his father had lost. The plan failed and though he was defeated at the hands of the French, he was heavily influenced by them and modelled his own royal court on that the French monarchy’s. He favoured French courtiers and married Eleanor of Provence.

William Alan Henry III (1950–1994) was an award-winning American cultural critic and author.

Career

Henry lived in North Plainfield, New Jersey as a young man. Henry graduated from Yale in 1971 and began his career in journalism in Boston, writing for the Boston Globe. His coverage of school desegregation in Boston won a (shared) Pulitzer Prize in 1975. He also wrote on the arts for the Globe, winning a second Pulitzer for his television criticism in 1980.

In the 1980s he worked as an arts critic for Time magazine, while pursuing his interests in cultural criticism and in American politics. Among his articles for Time was a story critical of the Hollywood trade newspapers in their cozy relationship in an industry town. Among his notable works were his 1984 book, Visions of America, on the American presidential campaign of that year; his 1990 video documentary of Bob Fosse, Steam Heat, which won an Emmy; and his 1992 (print) biography of Jackie Gleason, The Great One.

His final, and perhaps most notable, book was In Defense of Elitism, a work of social and cultural criticism that argued that societies and cultures might be ranked on a spectrum ranging from 'egalitarianism' to 'elitism', and that the contemporary United States had moved too far away from the latter; a view he defended with reference to college education, multiculturalism, and other topics. He died of a heart attack on June 28, 1994 while the book was coming to press.
