Meissen Porcelain collection at the Festival of Antiques, discussed by Serhat Ahmet.
BBC Antique Roadshow and Antiques Road Trip presenter, Serhat Ahmet, took a look at a Meissen Porcelain collection at the Festival of Antiques, on Friday 1st October 2021.
Meissen Porcelain is something that is very close to Serhat's heart, and it is what he loves the most about his job - disproving Meissen Porcelain! So, as you can imagine, Serhat was delighted that you could find so many examples of Meissen Porcelain at the Festival of Antiques.

Magnus Gjoen x MEISSEN
The extraordinary cooperation between the British-Norwegian artist Magnus Gjoen and the porcelain manufacturer MEISSEN is intended to give people hope and to be a universal ambassador for love, peace and harmonious coexistence. So it's no big surprise that the artist chose MEISSEN's iconic Cupid figurines for his works, which generally stand for love and romance. The figures have been part of the Meissen manufactory's repertoire since the 18th century and are particularly enchanting because of their graceful figures and their graceful nature. Gjoen has brought them into the here and now through a skillful reinterpretation, thus breathing new life into the traditional figures.
The result are three handmade MEISSEN angels that flood the gray, dark world with love and thus represent a beacon...

The Remarkable Resilience of the Oppenheimer Meissen Collection
This Fall, Sotheby’s is honored to offer a magnificent pre-war collection of early 18th century Meissen porcelain formed by Franz and Margarethe Oppenheimer. Many pieces in the collection, including a highly important mantel clock case, have royal provenance and were created explicitly for King Augustus the Strong’s famed Japanese palace. In spite of their fragility, the pieces are in excellent condition, having survived Nazi confiscation and subsequent rescue from the Allies renowned Monuments Men. Recently restituted to the Oppenheimer heirs, the collection will be sold at Sotheby’s New York on 14 September.

It's more than a mug, it's MEISSEN!
MEISSEN occupies a unique position amongst porcelain makers worldwide. As the oldest porcelain manufactory in Europe, founded in 1710 by King Augustus the Strong, the dining services, sculptures and objects created by Meissen have been trailblazing since the very beginning. The manufactory's worldwide renown is rooted in artisanal expertise and centuries of artistic tradition, beginning from Meissen’s Baroque period, which laid the foundation for a design language for European porcelain, iconic floral painting and the “Onion Pattern”, all the way to the new animal sculptures of the 1920s. In every era, the Meissen manufactory gave rise to some the most significant porcelain artists of the time, whose masterpieces both then and now are produced entirely by hand. Their works reflect not only...

The result are three handmade MEISSEN angels that flood the gray, dark world with love and thus represent a beacon against war and hatred. Both the choice of the figures and the choice of porcelain as the material for his artworks embody contradictions. The high mechanical resistance of porcelain, its durability, but also its soft feel and beauty are the perfect solution for this great cooperation.
Gifted artist Magnus Gjoen began his career as a designer, working for icons such as Vivinne Westwood, among others, and became an artist rather "by accident". With a unique combination of wit and elegance, he manages to reinterpret Renaissance artworks and infuse them with powerful messages.
The three angels created in the collaboration between Gojen and MEISSEN are only exclusively available and limited to an edition of 50 pieces each.
