North Korea (listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl:조선민주주의인민공화국;hancha:朝鮮民主主義人民共和國;MR:Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
The Kim dynasty is a three-generation lineage of North Korean leadership descending from the country's first leader, Kim Il-sung, in 1948. Kim came to rule the North after the end of Japanese control in 1945 split the region. He began the Korean War in 1950 in an attempt to reunify the peninsula. Kim developed a cult of personality closely tied to their state philosophy of Juche, which was passed on to his successors: his son Kim Jong-il and grandson Kim Jong-un.
Overview
Unlike governance in all other Communist countries, North Korea's governance is comparable to a royal family. The Kim dynasty has ruled North Korea since 1948 for three generations, and still little about the family is publicly confirmed.Kim Il-sung rebelled against Korea's Japanese rule in the 1930s, which led to his involvement and training in the Soviet Union. Korea was left divided after Japan's post-World War II withdrawal in 1945, and Kim came to lead the Soviet-backed North's provisional government, eventually becoming the first premier of its new government, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (known as North Korea), in 1948. He started the Korean War in 1950 with hopes to reunify the region.
Korea emerged as a singular political entity after centuries of conflict among the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which were unified as Silla (57 BC – AD 935) and Balhae (AD 698 – 926). The united Silla was eventually succeeded by Goryeo in 935 at the end of the Later Three Kingdoms period. Goryeo, which gave name to the modern exonym "Korea", was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century. The invasions by the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation, which forced it into vassalage. After the Yuan dynasty's collapse, severe political strife followed. Goryeo eventually fell to an uprising led by General Yi Seong-gye, who established Joseon in 1388.
In late August of 1945, Stalin and the Soviet Union appointed Kim Il-sung to lead the new occupation government in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula after the Japanese surrender.
Stalin probably would have preferred a Soviet Korean to run things. But those people had little familiarity with the Korean nation and Kim came highly recommended by his fellow guerrillas.
Over time, Kim Il-sung would purge his enemies, remove any challenge to his power, and center society completely around him. In this video, we look at how the Democratic People's Republic of Korea constructed a cult of personality around its founding father and his family.

The Life Story of North Korea's Kim Family
The Hermit Kingdom of Korea may have opened its doors since the demise of the Japanese empire, but in many ways it’s more closed off than ever before. It’s a place of unspeakable horrors where smiling children perform pitch perfect violin recitals for the elites, knowing full well that a bum note could get their families thrown into concentration camps.

The country’s cult of personality is so unlike anything the world has ever seen that it sounds like a work of fiction. It’s a strange cross between ‘1984’ and ‘The Truman Show’ where everyone performs, no one criticises and the rulers are always watching. Who are the rulers? The Kim family, whose dead ancestors remain very much in power in what the late Christopher Hitchens called a ‘necrocracy’.
But how does a family keep this show running? How did they even rise to power? And will their grip on the nation last or is their way of life coming to an end? It’s time to learn How History Works by entering North Korea, the biggest family run dictatorship.

North Korea hasn’t always been under the totalitarian rule of the Kim regime. Foreign enablers and internal strife have completely reshaped the region over the last 100+ years, transforming a once-peaceful monarchy into the oppressive dictatorship we know today. #HistoryChannel

In a speech to commemorate the event, Kim said his country is ready to mobilise its nuclear war deterrent and denounced South Korea's new conservative president Yoon Suk-yeol by name for the first time, labelling attempts to neutralise the North's military as 'nonsense'.
