Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin (/ˈpuːtɪn/; Russian:Влади́мир Влади́мирович Пу́тин;IPA:[vlɐˈdʲimʲɪr vlɐˈdʲimʲɪrəvʲɪtɕ ˈputʲɪn], born 7 October 1952) has been the President of Russia since 7 May 2012, succeeding Dmitry Medvedev. Putin previously served as President from 2000 to 2008, and as Prime Minister from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2012. During his last term as Prime Minister, he was also the chairman of United Russia, the ruling party.
For 16 years, Putin was an officer in the KGB, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel before he retired to enter politics in his native Saint Petersburg in 1991. He moved to Moscow in 1996 and joined President Boris Yeltsin's administration where he rose quickly, becoming Acting President on 31 December 1999 when Yeltsin unexpectedly resigned. Putin easily won the subsequent 2000 presidential election and was reelected in 2004. Because of constitutionally mandated term limits, Putin was ineligible to run for a third consecutive presidential term in 2008. Dmitry Medvedev won the 2008 presidential election and appointed Putin as Prime Minister, beginning a period of so-called "tandemocracy". In September 2011, following a change in the law extending the presidential term from four years to six, Putin announced that he would seek a third, non-consecutive term as President in the 2012 presidential election, an announcement which led to large-scale protests in many Russian cities. In March 2012, he won the election, which was criticized for procedural irregularities, and is serving a six-year term.
BBC News is an operational business division of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) responsible for the gathering and broadcasting of news and current affairs. The department is the world's largest broadcast news organisation and generates about 120 hours of radio and television output each day, as well as online news coverage. The service maintains 50 foreign news bureaux with more than 250 correspondents around the world.James Harding has been Director of News and Current Affairs since April 2013.
The department's annual budget is £350million; it has 3,500 staff, 2,000 of whom are journalists. BBC News' domestic, global and online news divisions are housed within the largest live newsroom in Europe, in Broadcasting House in central London. Parliamentary coverage is produced and broadcast from studios in Millbank in London. Through the BBC English Regions, the BBC also has regional centres across England, as well as national news centres in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. All nations and English regions produce their own local news programmes and other current affairs and sport programmes.
BBC News (also referred to as the BBC News Channel) is the BBC's 24-hour rolling news television network in the United Kingdom. The channel launched as BBC News 24 on 9 November 1997 at 17:30 as part of the BBC's foray into digital domestic television channels, becoming the first competitor to Sky News, which had been running since 1989. For a time, looped news, sport and weather bulletins were available to view via BBC Red Button.
On 22 February 2006, the channel was named News Channel of the Year at the Royal Television Society Television Journalism Awards for the first time in its history. The judges remarked that this was the year that the channel had "really come into its own."
From May 2007, UK viewers could watch the channel via the BBC News website. In April 2008, the channel was renamed BBC News as part of a £550,000 rebranding of the BBC's news output, complete with a new studio and presentation. Its sister service, BBC World was also renamed BBC World News while the national news bulletins became BBC News at One, BBC News at Six and BBC News at Ten. Across the day the channel averages about twice the audience of Sky News.
Traditionally, the founding date of Vladimir has been acknowledged as 1108, as the first mention of Vladimir in the Primary Chronicle appears under that year. This view attributes the founding of the city, and its name, to Vladimir Monomakh, who inherited the region as part of the Rostov-Suzdal Principality in 1093. It is named there as Volodymyr. Being established long after the city of Vladimir in Volhynia, initially it was named Vladimir-on-Klyazma. In 1958, the 850th anniversary of the city foundation was celebrated, with many monuments from the celebrations adorning the city.
Max Vasmer in his Etymological Dictionary of Russian Language explains the name as meaning "regal".
Folk etymology interprets the meaning as "person of the people" or "the one with peace on one side". This confusion is introduced by other meanings of the Slavic word "Mir" or "Myr" – peace, people/community, and the world. There was no ambiguity prior to reforms of Russian orthography in 1918. The spelling of the two words was миръ (peace) and мiръ (the Universe), and the name was spelled the third way, Владимѣръ, of Gothic -mērs (great), meaning "Great in His Power" (compare: Theodemir, Valamir). but Russian speakers understood and understand the meaning as "Peace Owner" or "World Ruler".
Vladimir (Russian:Владимир), baptismal name: Vasily Nikiforovich Bogoyavlensky (Russian:Василий Никифорович Богоявленский; 1 January 1848 — 7 February[O.S. January 25]1918), was a bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church. He was appointed the position of Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna between 1898–1912, Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga between 1912–1915, and Metropolitan of Kiev and Gallich between 1915–1918. Murdered by Bolshevik soldiers in 1918, Metropolitan Vladimir was glorified as a Hieromartyr by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1998.

Putin Speech LIVE | Russian President's Message To Trump As Moscow Rains Hellfire On Ukraine
On November 22, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the Ukraine conflict had taken on the characteristics of a "global" war and did not rule out the possibility of strikes on Western nations. Putin’s remarks followed a tense day during which Russia test-fired a next-generation intermediate-range missile at Ukraine, a weapon he suggested could carry a nuclear payload.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike, calling it a significant escalation in the "scale and brutality" of the war by a "crazy neighbor." Meanwhile, the United States, Ukraine's primary ally, accused Russia of escalating the conflict "at every turn."

He said that the missile, codenamed Oreshnik, was a response to Ukraine's use of US and UK-supplied long-range weaponry towards targets inside Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said an attack by his forces on the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Thursday morning was carried out using "a new conventional intermediate-range missile".
He said that the missile, codenamed Oreshnik, was a response to Ukraine's use of US and UK-supplied long-range weaponry towards targets inside Russia.
Putin also suggested Russia could attack military facilities of those countries which allowed their weapons to be used for this purpose.
The US and the UK authorised the use of US ATACMS and UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles this week, in a major change of policy.

Lava flows have destroyed several homes following a volcanic eruption in south-west Iceland.
A volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula erupted on Sunday, spilling molten rock into the town of Grindavik. The local population was evacuated.
Defences built after an eruption in December were breached in places, setting houses on fire. But by Monday the flow had almost stopped.
There is no danger to the rest of Iceland, officials have said.

The protestors, who had anti-Putin slogans painted on their bodies, shouted "Putin is a dictator" as they ambushed him and the German chancellor in Hannover
South Korean MPs have voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The vote marks a second attempt to impeach Yoon over his botched attempt to declare martial law, which sparked mass protests.
Thousands of people took to the streets in Seoul as protesters - both supporting and against the president - staged huge rallies ahead of the impeachment vote.
He will be suspended from office while the prime minister will serve as acting president.

An alleged Chinese spy who formed an "unusual degree of trust" with the Duke of York has been banned from the UK, after a judgement by the UK's semi-secret national security court.
The man, known only as H6 and described as a "close confidant" to Prince Andrew, brought an appeal against his initial ban but the decision was upheld by the court.
Judges were told the businessman was attempting to leverage Prince Andrew's influence.
Buckingham Palace declined to comment, saying they do not act for the prince, who is not a working royal.

President Emmanuel Macron has named centrist leader François Bayrou as France's next prime minister, in a bid to end months of political turmoil.
A Macron ally, Bayrou is a mayor from the southwest and leads the MoDem party. Ahead of the announcement, the two men spent almost two hours in talks described as tense by French media.
The president's task is now to ensure Bayrou lasts longer than his predecessor, ex-Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, who lasted just three months and was ousted by MPs nine days ago.
Macron is half-way through his second term as president and Bayrou will be his fourth prime minister this year.

Diary of a CEO host Steven Bartlett is amplifying harmful health misinformation on his number-one ranked podcast, a BBC investigation has found.
Recent claims from guests - including that cancer can be treated by following a keto diet, rather than proven treatments - were allowed by the Dragons' Den star with little or no challenge. Experts have told us failing to question these disproven claims is dangerous because it creates a distrust of conventional medicine.
In an analysis of 15 health-related podcast episodes, BBC World Service found each contained an average of 14 harmful health claims that went against extensive scientific evidence.
Flight Studio - the podcast production company owned by Mr Bartlett - said guests were offered "freedom of expression" and were "thoroughly researched".

US President Joe Biden has issued presidential pardons to 39 Americans convicted of non-violent crimes, and commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 others, including several convicted of multi-million dollar fraud schemes.
The White House described it as the most acts of presidential clemency issued in a single day. It comes after Biden made the decision to pardon his own criminally convicted son, Hunter Biden.
Announcing the move, Biden said those pardoned had "shown successful rehabilitation and have shown commitment to making their communities stronger and safer".
The US Constitution decrees that a president has the broad "power to grant reprieves and pardons for offences against the United States, except in cases of impeachment".

Mikheil Kavelashvili, a former Manchester City footballer, has been appointed president by Georgia's disputed parliament, after 17 days of pro-EU protests that have swept this country's towns and cities.
The 53-year-old is a former MP from the increasingly authoritarian ruling Georgian Dream party and was the only candidate for the job.
On Saturday, 224 out of 225 members of Georgia's electoral college voted for him.
The four main opposition groups have rejected Kavelashvili and have boycotted parliament, insisting that the elections held in October were rigged.
Large crowds of protesters, facing freezing temperatures, gathered outside parliament from the early hours of Saturday morning ahead of the vote.

The US has carried out a fourth round of strikes on Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen, Pentagon officials confirmed on Wednesday night.
Some 14 Houthi missiles, which the US says may have been intended for attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, were targeted by American forces.
The strikes come as the US designated the Houthis as "global terrorists".
The Houthis began attacking merchant vessels in November, saying they were responding to Israel's military operation in Gaza.
