Whittington is a village in north west Shropshire, England.
The civil parish of Whittington had a population of 2,490 at the 2001 census, increasing to 2,592 at the 2011 census. The village of Whittington is in the centre of the parish, and three smaller villages, Park Hall to its west, Hindford to the north-east and Babbinswood to the south, are also within the parish.
History
Whittington appears to have been a prehistoric site and may have been a Dark Ages stronghold of King Cynddylan in the seventh century. There was an extensive settlement here recorded in the Domesday Book.
Whittington was granted to William Peverel probably in the summer of 1114 when King Henry I of England invaded Powys. William probably founded Whittington Castle which was taken from his descendants by the Welsh under Madog ap Maredudd of Powys and later granted to Roger Powys by King Henry II. It remained in the Powys family until King John granted it to the FitzWarin family, namely Fulk III FitzWarin(d.1258) whose life is recorded in a mediaeval romance.
The county's population and economy is centred on five towns: the county town of Shrewsbury, which is culturally and historically important and is located close to the centre of the county;Telford, a new town in the east which was constructed around a number of older towns, most notably Wellington, Dawley and Madeley, which is today the most populous; and Oswestry in the north-west, Bridgnorth just to the south of Telford, and Ludlow in the south. The county has many market towns, including Whitchurch in the north, Newport north-east of Telford and Market Drayton in the north-east of the county.
The Shropshire breed of domestic sheep originated from the hills of Shropshire, and North Staffordshire, England, during the 1840s. The breeders in the area used the local horned black-faced sheep and crossed them with a few breeds of white-faced sheep (Southdown, Cotswold, and Leicester). This produced a medium-sized polled (hornless) sheep that produced good wool and meat. In 1855 the first Shropshires were imported into the United States (Virginia). This breed is raised primarily for meat.
1800s
In 1859 the breed was officially recognized by the Royal Agricultural Society as being a distinct breed. The popularity of the Shropshire breed grew rapidly in England, and in 1882 Shropshire breeders founded the Shropshire Sheep Breeders' Association and Flock Book Society, the world's first such society for sheep. The same year the Society published the first Flock Book, a record of sheep bred and their breeders. The Society still survives, and still publishes a Flock Book annually.

Walks in Shropshire: Exploring Ludlow
Harriet, Lola and I are taking a walk through the historic market town of Ludlow in Shropshire.
Ludlow is a market town in Shropshire, England, 28 miles (45 km) south of Shrewsbury and 23 miles (37 km) north of Hereford via the main A49 road, which bypasses the town. With a population of approximately 11,000, Ludlow is the largest town in south Shropshire. The town is significant in the history of the Welsh Marches and neighbouring Wales.

Beautiful Places In The Shropshire Hills//We are back at exploring the most beautiful places in the UK and although we live right by the Shropshire border, we haven't been to the Shropshire Hills before. What can we say? Absolutely stunning. We first went to beautiful Stokesay Castle which not many people have on their radar but it's a must see. And then we went to enjoy the breathtaking views towards Carding Mill Valley and its Long Mynd Ponies. Definitely a place to go back in spring to go for amazing hikes. We fell in love with another place and hope you do too should you visit. Oh and by the way: We stumbled upon an antiques shop in Church Stretton hahah.

I headed over to the Shropshire Hills for the first time ever for a lovely hike over the Long Mynd, visiting numerous peaks along the way. It was in preparation for the Yorkshire 3 Peaks in a few weeks time and to get the legs used to going uphill again! About 1/3 of the way along the route we summited Pole Bank, the highest point along the Long Mynd.
What a spectacular place to visit!

The exact origins of the Shropshire sheep breed are unclear but we have a good suspicion they are from Shropshire! The breed was developed in the early 19th century. The developers of the Shropshire breed were inspired by the success of the Leicester Longwool sheep and so made their own breed using the same method of 'selective breeding'.
The modern Shropshire is a useful and productive dual-purpose breed. Shropshires are medium sized and well fleeced.
