Southwest (SW or S.W.) is the southwestern quadrant of Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, and is located south of the National Mall and west of South Capitol Street. It is the smallest quadrant of the city. Southwest is small enough that it is frequently referred to as a neighborhood in and of itself. However, it actually contains five separate neighborhoods.
Geography
Southwest is actually composed of five neighborhoods:
the Southwest Federal Center, also called the Southwest Employment District, is the area between the National Mall and the Southeast/Southwest Freeway (Interstate 395).
A significant section of Capitol Hill is also located in Northeast, as is part of NoMa. The population of Northeast is predominantly African-American, particularly east of the Anacostia River.
Politically, Northeast includes most of Ward 5, much of Wards 6 and 7, and parts of Ward 4.
Baltimore (/ˈbɔːltᵻˌmɔːr/, locally: [ˈbɔɫ.mɔɻ]) is the largest city in the U.S. state of Maryland, and the 26th-most populous city in the country. It is the largest independent city in the United States. Baltimore has more public monuments than any other city per capita in the country and is home to some of the earliest National Register historic districts in the nation, including Fell's Point (1969), Federal Hill (1970) and Mount Vernon Place (1971). More than 65,000 properties, or roughly one in three buildings in the city, are listed on the National Register, more than any other city in the nation.
Founded in 1729, Baltimore is the second largest seaport in the Mid-Atlantic. Baltimore's Inner Harbor was once the second leading port of entry for immigrants to the United States and a major manufacturing center. After a decline in major manufacturing, industrialization and rail transportation, Baltimore shifted to a service-oriented economy, with the Johns Hopkins Hospital (founded 1889), and Johns Hopkins University (founded 1876), now the city's top two employers.
Prince Rogers Nelson (born June 7, 1958), known by his mononymPrince, is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and actor, and has been a major figure in popular music for over three decades. Prince is renowned as an innovator and is widely known for his eclectic work, flamboyant stage presence, and wide vocal range. He is widely regarded as the pioneer of Minneapolis sound. His music combines rock, R&B, soul, funk, hip hop, disco, psychedelia, jazz, and pop.
Prince was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and developed an interest in music at an early age, writing his first song at age seven. After recording songs with his cousin's band 94 East, 19-year-old Prince recorded several unsuccessful demo tapes before releasing his debut album For You in 1978, under the guidance of manager Owen Husney. His 1979 album Prince went platinum due to the success of the singles "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover". His next three records — Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982) — continued his success, showcasing Prince's trademark of prominently sexual lyrics and incorporation of elements of funk, dance, and rock music. In 1984, he began referring to his backup band as The Revolution and released Purple Rain, which served as the soundtrack to his film debut of the same name. A prolific songwriter, Prince in the 1980s wrote songs for and produced work by many other acts, often under pseudonyms.
The building sits on a raised "island" of sorts between two open trenches, one for the Jones Falls Expressway and the other the tracks of the Northeast Corridor (NEC). The NEC approaches from the south through the two-track, 7,660-foot Baltimore and Potomac Tunnel, which opened in 1873 and whose 30mph limit, sharp curves, and steep grades make it one of the NEC's worst bottlenecks. The NEC's northern approach is the 1873 Union Tunnel, which has one single-track bore and one double-track bore.

I Ventured Into The Worst Parts Of Washington, D.C. This Is What I Saw.
Washington, D.C. sure has changed!!
For this video, I drove southwest along I95 from Baltimore. My plan was to visit the absolute worst Washington DC hoods I could find. I had done my homework and knew I would be heading to DC’s Ward 8, on the southeast side of the city.
The day was Sunday, February 23, 2020 at about 1 in the afternoon.
Now way back In 1992, Washington DC was the murder capital of America, mostly because of crack. It’s still rough in many areas, but it’s actually getting way cleaner and far safer. That’s the case with many of the other cities I’ve visited - places which took hard turns in the 60s, 70s and 80s are now seeing a bit of a I guess good clean scrub.

Onsite with Matt Cheney EP20: West Northwest
Hello and welcome to Onsite with Matt Cheney, a collection of short videos following me throughout metropolitan Washington to the neighborhoods I serve as a realtor.
We are up the Hill from downtown today to give you a quick tour of west Northwest. Back in the day before cars and trains they often referred to areas outside of downtown as Washington County.
Massachusetts Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue are the two main corridors running through the area and connect Washington D.C. to Bethesda, Maryland.
Want to be ten (10) minutes from the city and Georgetown? Looking for beautiful houses, cool playgrounds, a plethora of shopping and restaurants? You should check out the zip code 20016.

Nonetheless, I had to see what was left of DC’s true hoods. So I ventured into Ward 8, also known as Anacostia, pretty much the only real terrible large neighborhood in our nation’s capital anymore.
There were blocks and blocks of housing projects here, but overall, as you’ll see, it wasn’t terrible. I never felt unsafe here. It was like a scrubbed down version of the ghetto hood that used to exist. Just block after block of cleaned up public housing, like someone had taken a firehose to the whole Ward and washed away all of the grime and the grit.
This part of town and MUCH of the southeastern and northeastern part of DC were absolutely the worst place you could live 20 years ago. But now, this whole city, including large parts across the river, are undergoing the most intense gentrification project in the nation.
They’re renovating large parts of this city, tearing down old ugly buildings. This has meant more homeless people for one. And many of the poorest people who once lived here have been pushed further out into the suburbs - into areas like Baltimore and to Prince George County just across the border in Maryland - an area with the nickname Ward 9.
So, we’ll let this run for about 15 minutes or so so you can see what is left of our nation’s historical true ghetto hoods.
And as we leave the DC area, off in the distance is the US Capitol dome, which we saw earlier from the hillsides across the river. But before we left the area, we wanted to check out other former ghetto hoods in the DC area.
This surprised us - this is the Capitol Hill neighborhood. It was once a horrible place for crime and blight. Look at IT now. And, we also saw the H street corridor in northeast DC. This place was also very blighted and dangerous not too long ago. But look at IT now.
So, we had come to see the dangerous hoods of DC, and instead, got a front row seat to a quickly changing urban revival project, as grimy neighborhoods of old are being resurrected into newer, modern safer and wealthier neighborhoods of the future. In terms of cleaning up its shitty areas, this city is FAR ahead of its neighbor to the north. Baltimore’s ghettos are still on another level. It may be another two decades before Baltimore makes its comeback.
As, Washington DC continues to lower crime and clean up its own neighborhoods, it must now battle with its next big challenge - homelessness.
This channel talks about America, different states, education, travel, geography and what it's like to live in different places in America.

You should also check out my wife’s favorite pizzeria Two Amy’s. A family favorite.
You can also find the campus of American University here. A place often visited by presidents.
Charles Glover had at one time had a country home here called Westover that was known for its sweeping views from the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia to the west, down to the Potomac and into the city with the Washington Monument and Capitol in sight.
To name a few of the neighborhoods here in 20016 are Spring Valley, Wesley Heights, Kent, American University Park, Tenleytown, and Cathedral Heights. As well as parts of Cleveland Park and the Palisades.
How about some real estate? Two Hundred Seventy (270) homes and townhomes sold here in 20016 this past year for an average sales price of $1,559,000 and with an average of thirty-tree (33) days on the market.
The most expense home to sell this past year was here in Spring Valley. The home was built in 2017, is 9,500 sf, has seven (7) bedrooms, five (5) full and one (1) half bath on a 23,000+ sf lot (that’s a half acre) and as you can see is the perfect showpiece and sold for $7,750,000.
And for Condos and Co-Ops. There were two hundred and fifty (250) units that traded this past year for an average sales price of $451K and averaged forty-two (42) days on the market. Not bad a bad value if you ask me.
The highest condominium sale was here in Wesley Heights at the circa 1971 Foxhall. The flat has floor to ceiling windows and wraparound terraces, two (2) bed, two (2) and a half baths, had been converted from a three (3) bedroom unit and has a grand 2,700 sf. It sold for $1,530,000.
Thank you for joining us today for episode twenty (20) of Onsite with Matt Cheney. Let us know if there are any neighborhood you would like us to shoot for future episodes. And as always like, comment and subscribe.
