The Charles P. Taft family commissioned artist George Grey Barnard to complete a statue in commemoration of the centenary of the Lincoln's birth. The sculpture was unveiled at Lytle Park on March 31, 1917. Former U.S. President William Howard Taft, the younger brother of Charles, delivered the dedication speech.

The original streamlined Abe Lincoln was one of two non-articulated, streamlined trains built with government assisted funding in 1935. The locomotive, B&O No. 50, was powered by an 1800-hp box-cab diesel made by EMC. After delivery, No. 50 was retrofitted with a quasi-streamlined, sloped front end. The Abraham Lincoln continued to operate following the Alton Railroad's merger with the GM&O in 1947, and one of the streamliner trainsets survived into the 1960s.
Amtrak
Following its takeover of most passenger rail service in the United States on May 1, 1971, Amtrak retained the Abraham Lincoln as a daily Chicago-St. Louis service, operating in tandem with the GM&O's old Limited. In November of that year Amtrak extended both the Abraham Lincoln and the Limited (now known as the Prairie State) through Chicago to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In October 1973 replaced the rolling stock with the new Turboliner; as part of this change the trains were re-branded as Turboliners the schedules truncated to Chicago. In February 1976 Amtrak returned conventional rolling stock to the route and revived the Abraham Lincoln name along with the Ann Rutledge. Amtrak added the State House to the Chicago-St. Louis corridor in 1977; in 1978 it dropped the Abraham Lincoln name altogether. Today service between Chicago and St. Louis is handled by the "Lincoln Service".

Lincoln’s Final Days in Springfield
On the morning of February 11, 1861, Abraham Lincoln looked out upon many of his rain- soaked Springfield friends and neighbors from the back of a train car. He gave a brief, emotional speech and then departed for Washington DC. He would not live to see Springfield again. The story of the days leading up to that final Springfield speech has been told many times over the years. Yet, even with all that has been written, there are still interesting details about that time period that may be clarified or explored to a greater degree. This talk is based on a forthcoming scholarly article and will look at and reexamine some incidents related to Lincoln’s last days in Springfield.

The University of the District of Columbia founding is rooted in the school for “colored girls” that Myrtilla Miner founded in 1851 in Washington, D.C., which came to be called the Miner Normal School. Washington Normal School, a school for white girls established in 1873, was renamed Wilson Normal School in 1913, after James O. Wilson, Washington’s first superintendent of public schools. In 1929, Congress enacted a statute that converted both normal schools into four-year teachers colleges. For several years, Miner Teachers College and Wilson Teachers College were the only institutions of public higher education in the city. The two colleges merged in 1955 to form the District of Columbia Teachers College. Over the next decade, D.C. residents petitioned for an expansion of higher education that would provide training for careers other than teaching. In 1966, Congress enacted the District of Columbia Public Education Act, which established Federal City College and Washington Technical Institute. Although these schools were still very new, many Washingtonians continued to advocate for a comprehensive university. The City Council authorized the consolidation of the three schools, and in 1976, began the monumental task of creating a new University of the District of Columbia. In 1977, under President Carter’s leadership, UDC began consolidating its academic programs. These efforts culminated in the establishment of five colleges: Business and Public Management; Education and Human Ecology; Liberal and Fine Arts; Life Sciences; Physical Science, Engineering, and Technology; and University College and Continuing Education.

Scott T. Schroeder is a professional healthcare practitioner and an independent historian focusing on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War era. He speaks regularly on those topics and is actively involved in research and manuscript preparation for article and book projects. He has led tours for Lincoln related sites and is involved in the development and/or co-development of various multimedia projects related to the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln. As an example of one of those projects, he, and project collaborator David Wiegers, created a freely accessible online map featuring the locations and descriptions of over 500 Lincoln sculptures around the world. Schroeder serves on the Board of Directors for the Abraham Lincoln Association, the Board of Advisors for the Lincoln Forum, the Board of Directors for the Abraham Lincoln Institute, and the Board of Directors for the Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia.

I failed once again I have not found just what I need it comes back to you in the end I'll take your call, and follow your lead so maybe you should come to the district 'cause two years is nothing more than a time to reset the score and reinvent the wheel again and maybe fall in love again so maybe I should fly to the rockies I'd take a break from moving on and slow it down to speed this up, we'd maybe see what this thing's made of, and maybe fall in love in the end this winter offered up a cold wake up call from this sleep to the things that matter more like you like a dream like a fire in me, so deep so maybe you should come to the district 'cause you say this is the good stuff, and holding you would not be too tough, we'd maybe see what this thing's made of, and maybe fall in love again so maybe I could change my life then I'd learn to love someone else but me, or maybe give you everything that you need, or maybe think of you while falling asleep, and maybe fall in love in the end and you know... that I find you waiting here at a similar point in space and mind so I must step past this fear I know we have a lifetime ahead to find to make my life work what else can I do if you're waiting for me I am ready for you and I'm ready to see your point of view now we must face the front and throw the past past all we leave behind never thinking of the pain we've cause each other and give only love this time only love this time so maybe you should come to the district (come to the district) maybe you should come to the district (come to the district) maybe you should come to the district (come to the district) maybe you should come to the district (come to the district) maybe you should come to the district (come to the district) maybe you should come to the district (come to the district)
