The Art and Science of Conservation: Behind the Scenes at the Freer Gallery of Art
What's possibly the most calming yet nerve-racking job in the world? Come behind the scenes of the Smithsonian's Freer Gallery of Art to find out!
The conservation and scientific research of ancient Asian art takes a large team of experts from many fields. In order to bring thousands of treasures from the East to the galleries of the Smithsonian in downtown Washington, D.C., several critical and careful steps toward ensuring the objects' continued longevity must be taken.

Original Freer Gallery of Art
Tucked away on a street in urban Detroit is a wonderful craftsmen style home that served as the first home for the world's largest collection of Asian art and American Impressionists. Its owner, Charles Lang Freer became one of the worlds most prominent collectors of Asian Art and art of the middle East at a time when art of the near and Far East was not really appreciated in the West. Today, his collection is housed in the Freer Gallery on the Mall in Washington D.C. But this is where it all started.

Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art. The Freer Gallery in D.C.
This is a lesser trafficked museum along the National Mall. I’m not sure why. It is as beautiful of a museum and the exhibits are just as interesting and educational as any of the other Smithsonian buildings exhibits. I really like how they have different sections here showing the particular regions art and artifacts. This method allows one an easier path to immerse themselves in a specific culture and timeframe. Late July 2021 on a very hot Sunday afternoon I came here and was very excited because, other than a quick jaunt through here several years back I had never explored the wonders of this museum. It has a sister museum nearby too. The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and that reopens in November 2021. I cannot wait to check that place out.

The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, are located on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Renowned and iconic objects originate from China, Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, the ancient Near East, and the Islamic world. The Freer Gallery also holds a significant group of American works of art largely dating to the late nineteenth century. It boasts the world’s largest collection of diverse works by James McNeill Whistler, including the famed Peacock Room.
Unified administratively and joined physically, the Freer and Sackler are dedicated to increasing our understanding of the arts of Asia through a broad portfolio of exhibitions, publications, conservation, research, and education. The museum is free and open to the public 364 days a year.

The National Museum of Asian Art consists of the Smithsonian Institution’s two Asian art galleries, the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, which are situated in connecting buildings on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The galleries are operated by the same board of trustees and share a budget. Both institutions are run by the same management, curatorial and other staff. The two galleries feature 45,000 works of Asian art.
The Freer Gallery of Art opened in 1923 to display the nineteenth century American painting and Asian art collection of American industrialist Charles Lang Freer. Freer provided an initial endowment used to construct the gallery building. The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery was built next door to the Freer in 1987, after Arthur M. Sackler donated 1,000 objects of ancient Chinese art and $4 million for a museum to house them.
The museums have separate collections. Based on Charles Freer's will, the Freer gallery can exhibit only works in its collection, and those works are not allowed to travel. The Sackler gallery can accept loaned objects and can also loan pieces from its collection.
