Bloomingdale is a neighborhood in the Northwestquadrant of Washington, D.C., less than two miles (3km) north of the United States Capitol building. It is a primarily residential neighborhood, with a small commercial center near the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue and First Street, NW featuring bars, restaurants, and food markets.
Most of Bloomingdale's houses are Victorian-style rowhouses built around 1900 as single-family homes. Today, these houses remain primarily single-family residences, with some recently converted to two-unit condominiums.
Geography
Bloomingdale is bounded to the north by Channing St., N.W., to the east by North Capitol St., to the south by Florida Ave., N.W., and to the west by Second St., N.W.. The neighborhoods bordering Bloomingdale are LeDroit Park to the west, Shaw to the southwest, Truxton Circle to the south, Eckington to the east, and Stronghold to the northeast. To the north, sit the McMillan Sand Filtration Site and the McMillan Reservoir.
Washington had an estimated population of 672,228 as of July 2015. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than onemillion during the workweek. The Washington metropolitan area, of which the District is a part, has a population of over 6million, the seventh-largestmetropolitan statistical area in the country.
Southwest (SW or S.W.) is the southwestern quadrant of Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, and is located south of the National Mall and west of South Capitol Street. It is the smallest quadrant of the city. Southwest is small enough that it is frequently referred to as a neighborhood in and of itself. However, it actually contains five separate neighborhoods.
Geography
Southwest is actually composed of five neighborhoods:
the Southwest Federal Center, also called the Southwest Employment District, is the area between the National Mall and the Southeast/Southwest Freeway (Interstate 395).
Politically, Southeast includes most of Ward 8, as well as much of Wards 6 and 7. Marion Barry, the former mayor of Washington, D.C., served as D.C. Council Member for Ward 8 until his death on November 23, 2014.

Senator wants to drain the 'swamp' by moving federal workers from DC
Republican Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst wants to move at least 30% of the federal workforce out of Washington, D.C., while mandating that federal workers must show up every day to the office.
Ernst announced her DRAIN THE SWAMP Act on Thursday, saying it would result in the federal government selling off unnecessary office space while presumably moving workers from the high-cost D.C. area.
Ernst is the chair of the Senate DOGE Caucus that’s intended to work with President-elect Donald Trump’s announced Department of Government Efficiency to cut government waste.
“My investigations have exposed how bureaucrats have been doing just about everything besides their job during the workday,” Ernst said in a news release. “Federal employees have shown they don’t want to work in Washington, and in the C...

Beneath the streets of Washington D.C. lies a fascinating network of tunnels that remain largely unknown to the public. These passageways, ranging from public pedestrian walkways to government-only corridors, reveal a hidden side of the nation’s capital. Did you know the Capitol is connected to other federal buildings by tunnels originally designed to shield legislators from harsh weather? Or that a secret conveyor belt once transported books from the Library of Congress directly to the Capitol?
The tunnels beneath Capitol Hill go beyond practicality—they’ve been a part of critical moments in U.S. history. During the Cold War, they were reinforced as fallout shelters, and more recently, they provided secure escape routes during the chaos of January 6, 2021. Even the FBI attempted to use tunnels for spying under the Soviet Embassy during Operation MONOPOLY, though the plan was riddled with technical failures.
These passageways also hold quirks and hidden treasures, like the Cannon Tunnel, where student art decorates the walls alongside post offices, cafeterias, and even shoe repair shops. In some tunnels, abandoned projects like unfinished subways serve as reminders of forgotten ambitions. And while the public sees only a fraction of these tunnels, restricted corridors link the Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, and even secret White House bunkers.
Explore the stories, mysteries, and surprises of this underground world. From secret passageways used by presidents to logistics innovations like driverless Senate subways, these tunnels are far more than simple pathways—they’re a glimpse into the hidden history of Washington D.C.

“Federal employees have shown they don’t want to work in Washington, and in the Christmas spirit, I am making their wish come true. Instead of keeping them bogged down in the swamp, I’m working to get bureaucrats beyond the D.C. beltway to remind public servants who they work for. In addition to improving government service for all Americans, we can give taxpayers an extra Christmas gift by selling off unused and expensive office buildings.”
