Edge lives and works on 400 acres. He's been farming this land practically all his life except for the time when he traded in his work boots for army boots.
The year was 1968, and Dale Ed...

Estimating the exact number of Vietnam War veterans who suffered from PTSD as a result of their service is difficult due to the stigma associated with mental health issues which lead to underreporting and changes in the understanding and diagnosis of PTSD over time.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, about 15% of Vietnam veterans were diagnosed with PTSD at the time of the most recent study in the late 1980s. It's also estimated that about 30% of Vietnam veterans have had PTSD in their lifetime.
I would like to thank those advertisers who place their ads on my Vietnam focused clips. After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1966, Kenny Moore served three tours in Vietnam with the Marine Corps, earning two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star. In the video, Moore recounts several memorable events from his first tour as an infantry officer in 1967-68. After the war, Moore stayed in the military and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Silver Star Citation: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Kenneth Wayne Moore (MCSN: 0-92890), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with military operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 9 May 1967 during Operation UNION, Second Lieutenant Moore's company was conducting a search and clear mission in Que Son District when it discovered an extensive tunnel complex concealing an undetermined number of Viet Cong. After tear gas, smoke and a grenade failed to force the enemy to surrender, Second Lieutenant Moore courageously entered the narrow 200-meter long tunnel with a companion in an attempt to capture the enemy. Advancing deep into the tunnel, they came under heavy rifle fire from the entrenched enemy. Undaunted, he and his fellow Marine moved to within ten meters of the enemy, threw a grenade and quickly left the tunnel. Although one Viet Cong emerged and surrendered, claiming there were no others in the tunnel, Second Lieutenant Moore and his companion armed with pistols, reentered the dark passage and daringly proceeded to within two meters of the remaining group of armed Viet Cong where they came under intense rifle fire. The Marines quickly expended their ammunition and moved back through the darkness to re-arm. Entering the tunnel again carrying an M-16 rifle, they were met with a heavy volume of rifle fire from the enemy and falling dirt and debris which rendered their rifles inoperable, forcing them to leave the cave. After lighting brush fires at the entrance, Second Lieutenant Moore exhibited resolute determination by digging a passage into the rear of the tunnel where he recovered two dead Viet Cong and two rifles. Early the following morning, he and his companion fearlessly entered the tunnel for the fourth time and recovered three more dead Viet Cong, a rifle, individual equipment, a tone of rice and a case of valuable documents. His daring actions and aggressive fighting spirit inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. By his dauntless courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Second Lieutenant Moore upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Vietnam War veteran reunites with man he saved on battlefield 50 years ago
Dale Edge never talked about the war but always wondered what happened to that wounded vet he helped save that awful day in Vietnam.
STORY: https://www.ksdk.co...
Dale Edge never talked about the war but always wondered what happened to that wounded vet he helped save that awful day in Vietnam.
STORY: https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/local/making-a-difference/illinois-vietnam-war-vet-reunites-man-he-saved-battlefield-50-years-ago/63-62d9f348-9606-430f-a2bf-7f9248bded1a
There is never an easy route to the places that matter.
And on this day, two men are going in a new direction.
The destination is Ashland, Illinois, a farming community about 120 miles and decibels from St. Louis.
"I've always liked farming because it's you're your own boss," said Dale Edge.
Edge lives and works on 400 acres. He's been farming this land practically all his life except for the time when he traded in his work boots for army boots.
The year was 1968, and Dale Edge was drafted to fight for his country in Vietnam.
"I knew probably it was a good likelihood I would get drafted. I wasn't going to volunteer, but I wasn't going to run either," he said.
But the Vietnam War was like a wound that never healed. Soldiers bravely faced the enemy only to come home and face scorn as soon as their plane landed.
"There's guys kissing the ground, glad to be back, glad to have made it," he said. "Then, another 30 feet from where they were doing that, people behind a fence started screaming and hollering and stuff that I ain't going to repeat it."
That's why Edge took his feelings and his stories and buried them. Except for one.
One story that needed an ending.
And recently, after getting his first smartphone, he finally decided to solve the mystery by doing some checking on the internet. Then, he got up the courage to make a phone call.
Fred Kjorlien answered.
"I said, 'Dale I got to be really honest, I don't know who you are.' He said, 'It's been 53 years so I can understand that.'"
Kjorlien lives in Minnesota and works for Great Steps, a company that makes prosthetic and orthotic devices. And he's pretty popular with his clients.
"They like people that are amputees because you can feel some of the stuff," he said. " And some people think 'Oh you got one, then I'm OK.'"
Kjorlien lost his leg during a firefight in Vietnam.
"I got behind a tree dropped down and this leg was up and I was shooting," he said. "And an RPG hit the side of the tree."
Edge remembers that attack.
"Before the medics got there, I put a tourniquet on Fred's leg," he told us.
And then he remembers keeping Fred calm and helping to get him on a medical evacuation chopper.
"He said, 'I'm going to beat you home,'" Edge recalled. "I said, 'I'll never forget that Fred.' And I didn't."
They were in the same platoon but didn't know each other that well before that day. Still, for more than half a century, Dale Edge wondered.
"I didn't know if he lived. I wanted to know if he made it or not," said Edge.
Thanks to one phone call, his empty feeling was now filled.
And then his heart was filled, when Fred drove more than 560 miles for a reunion more than 50 years in the making.
So much time and distance meant so little as soon as the two men started talking. They would spend the weekend excavating memories.
"It was an answer to a prayer if you want to know the truth," Edge said. "I don't know how many times I prayed for that man."
Remembering the hard days is always easier with an old friend.
For the first time since they've been back from Vietnam, these two veterans finally get a welcome home.
"It means a lot because I love him," said a teary-eyed Kjorlien.

Why New Soldiers Didn’t Survive in Vietnam
After graduating from college in 1965, Robert Ferguson enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to escape the draft. Ferguson completed Officers Candidate School, but was rejected from flight training due to poor depth perception. Instead, he trained as a radar operator and deployed to Vietnam in 1966, completed seventy combat missions in seven months. He was then reassigned as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) to coordinate air support in the field. In 1967, Ferguson was severely burned when an armored vehicle detonated an explosive device. He was evacuated and spent the remainder of his military career recovering in various hospitals in Japan and the United States.

Bob Andron, 77, was legally married to Linda Throng's mom, Lin, while he lived in Vietnam between January 1970 and January 1971.
