The Western Cape (Afrikaans:Wes-Kaap, Xhosa:iNtshona Kapa) is a province of South Africa, situated in the south-western part of the country. It is the fourth largest of the nine provinces in terms of both area and population, with an area of 129,449 square kilometres (49,981sqmi) and 5.8 million inhabitants. About two-thirds of these inhabitants live in the metropolitan area of Cape Town, which is also the provincial capital. The Western Cape was created in 1994 from part of the former Cape Province.
Geography
The Western Cape Province is roughly L-shaped, extending north and east from the Cape of Good Hope, in the southwestern corner of South Africa. It stretches about 400 kilometres (250mi) northwards along the Atlantic coast and about 500 kilometres (300mi) eastwards along the South African south coast (Southern Indian Ocean). It is bordered on the north by the Northern Cape and on the east by the Eastern Cape. The total land area of the province is 129,462 square kilometres (49,986sqmi), about 10.6% of the country's total. It is roughly the size of England or the US state of Louisiana. The capital and largest city is Cape Town and other major cities include Stellenbosch, Worcester, Paarl, and George. The Garden Route and the Overberg are popular coastal tourism areas.
Western Cape is a Geographical Unit within the Wine of Origin classification system of South African wine. Corresponding to the province of Western Cape it includes most of the vineyards in South Africa.
Style
The wines of the Western Cape range from sturdy Rhone-style red wines to aromatic Sauvignon blancs in vineyards cooled by breezes off the Atlantic.
History
On 2 February 1659 the founder of Cape Town, Jan van Riebeeck, produced the first wine recorded in South Africa. In 1685, the Constantia estate was established in a valley facing False Bay by the Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel. His 'Vin de Constance' soon acquired a good reputation. But it was Hendrik Cloete, who bought the homestead in 1778, who really made the name of Constantia famous, with an unfortified wine made from a blend of mostly Muscat de Frontignan (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains), Pontac, red and white Muscadel (probably clones of Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains??) and a little Chenin blanc. It became a favorite tipple of European kings and emperors, from Frederick the Great to Napoleon. But the vineyards were decimated by phylloxera, the Cloete family were bankrupted, and Groot Constantia was sold to the government as an experimental station. In 1980 Duggie Jooste bought Klein Constantia, redeveloped it, and is now selling a new version of Vin de Constance made from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains.
With a population of 7,671, the state capital of Montpelier is the least populous state capital in the US. Vermont's most populous city is Burlington. With a 2013 population of 42,284, Burlington is the least populous city in the United States to be the largest city within a state. Burlington's metropolitan area has a population of 214,796. Vermont is one of the most racially homogeneous states; 94.3% of its population identified as non-Hispanic white in 2010.
Vermont wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of Vermont. The first commercial winery in Vermont, Snow Farm Winery, opened in 1997. Vermont is a very cold climate for viticulture. Vermont wineries have focused on using cold-hardy French hybrid grapes, but have been experimenting with some Vitis viniferavarieties. Some Vermont wineries produce wine made from grapes grown in other states, especially New York.

Welcome to PATERNOSTER | WESTERN CAPE ADVENTURE, Part IV
With Cape Town behind us, we road-trip it up the West Coast to one of the oldest fishing villages in South Africa - Paternoster. Situated between Saldanha Bay and St Helena Bay, the coastal town is home to less than 2000 inhabitants. Reminiscent of the Greek islands, with its white-washed homes and rocky outcrops into the Atlantic ocean, we’re here for the next 4 days, and will be sure to make the most of the sun, sand and seafood on offer.
Join us as we make our way down to the Western Cape in this latest series and spend just over a week exploring one of the most beautiful provinces in South Africa.

Western Cape: Groups in South African region push for secession
Some groups in South Africa's Western Cape province are pushing for independence.
Support for the governing party has dropped in recent years, with it losing power in most major cities in recent local elections.
While those behind the move for secession say the African National Congress is dragging the province down, others argue the move is racially motivated.

S1 – Ep 253 – Paarl – A Historic Town in the Western Cape of South Africa!
The decision to start our exploration of Paarl at the Afrikaanse Taalmonument was a fantastic idea. This structure is truly impressive. Walking around and seeing the size of it was wild. The gardens are beautiful, the sound of the water flowing around the foot of the monument was relaxing. Then we went to explore historic Paarl which is a town in the Western Cape of South Africa. Driving through the streets and seeing the old buildings and realising the history in this town was super exciting. The old graves at the one church just reminded us of its past. Then to top it off, walking around at the Spice Route destination was awesome. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #capetown #westerncape #paarl #tablemountain

Can the Western Cape become its own country?
The Western Cape is roughly the same size as England and has close to 7 million people residing in the province. In recent months, hundreds of thousands of people have been calling for it to split away from South Africa and become its own country. Speaking to those advocating for this split as well as legal experts, we take a look at what that process would look like and if it would legally be possible.

The Western Cape Information Directory provides information on accommodation, activities, restaurants and businesses in the Western Cape.
Situated on the south western tip of Africa; Cape Town and the Western Cape is recognised as one of the most beautiful places on earth. It is also South Africa's most popular tourist destination without a doubt. The Western Cape Travel Directory offers visitors to the province a comprehensive guide to the thrills of Cape Town, the magnificent Cape Winelands and so much more!
The Western Cape province is the oldest and most gracious in South Africa and is well loved by tourists, both local and international.
Two oceans meet on the coast of the Western Cape: the cold Atlantic Ocean is in the west, while the warmer Indian Ocean lies on the southern coast. A jumble of diversity gives the Western Cape its cosmopolitan flavour. There are cities, quaint fishing villages and small towns in the province all bringing something special to the Western Cape.
The region is topographically and climatically varied with a temperate southern coastline fringed with mountains while the north stretches into the arid Karoo. The southern coastal area is fertile, while fishing is the most important industry along the west coast. Snow is a common occurrence in winter on the mountains, occasionally reaching down into the valleys.
The Western Cape has major airports in Cape Town and George with important ports in Mossel Bay, Cape Town and Saldanha. The province is the smallest of the world’s floral kingdoms, the Cape Floral Kingdom which is made up of fynbos and the protea family. Tourism and real estate are the main contributors to the Western Cape’s economy with tourism having shown substantial growth in the last few years.
Some Western Cape Highlights
Robben Island trips taken from the V&A waterfront in Cape Town

Table Mountain
The Whale Coast
The Cape Winelands
The Klein Karoo and Central Karoo
The Garden Route – incorporating Mossel Bay, Sedgefield, George, Wilderness, Plettenberg Bay and Knysna
The West Coast National Park
The best-known feature of the Western Cape is the Garden Route, a drive along the N2 that extends between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. There are a vast number of tour operators which provide excellent service along this route. It is South Africa's most concentrated strip for packaged adventure sports and outdoor activities.
Activities in the Western Cape
The Western Cape is home to the world's longest wine route, found along Route 62, a scenic tourist route that is growing in popularity.
The wine growing areas incorporate Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington, Franschhoek, Ceres, Worcester, Bonnievale and Robertson. A trip up the West Coast will take you through many a small town, mainly quiet fishing villages such as Langebaan and Paternoster.
Culture plays an important role in the Western Cape, with its heritage possibly better preserved here than in any other region in the country. Wherever you find yourself in the province, there will be a sharp focus on arts and crafts, music and all other cultural pursuits.
The activities directory has a range of advertisers across the province advertising their establishments.
Western Cape Accommodation

Cape of Good Hope, at the tip of the Cape Peninsula
The accommodation options across the Western Cape are hugely diverse, offering something for every visitor. Elaborate Hotels, laid-back backpackers, charming bed and breakfasts, simple self-catering and camping - the choice is extensive. Please view the accommodation directory for more information on all there is on offer across the Western Cape.

Tropicfeel invited us to take part in their Say Yes campaign. As international travel is still very limited, we set off around the Western Cape on a camping adventure. Starting at Gecko Rock Nature Reserve, we spent the day climbing and then headed to the Overberg coastal region for some sand, sea and surf.
Tropicfeel want to challenge you to just #sayyes to your own adventure. So every Thursday this summer (or winter), they are giving away some incredible prizes and trips. Check it out on their Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/tropicfeel/

Some groups in South Africa's Western Cape province are pushing for independence.
Support for the governing party has dropped in recent years, with it losing power in most major cities in recent local elections.
While those behind the move for secession say the African National Congress is dragging the province down, others argue the move is racially motivated.

A 62-year-old Malmesbury man in the Western Cape has been arrested after more than 40 firearms, two light delivery vans full of ammunition, as well as gunpowder, were found in a locked warehouse. Ayesha Ismail reports that while investigations continue, police are not ruling out more arrests. #DStv403
