Native speakers of Afrikaans comprise a higher percentage of the population in the Northern Cape than in any other province. The Northern Cape's four official languages are Afrikaans, Tswana, Xhosa, and English. Minorities speak the other official languages of South Africa, and a few people speak indigenous languages such as Nama and Khwe.
South African wine has a history dating back to 1659 with Constantia, a vineyard near Cape Town, being considered one of the greatest wines in the world. Access to international markets has unleashed a burst of new energy and new investment. Production is concentrated around Cape Town, with major vineyard and production centres at Paarl, Stellenbosch and Worcester. There are about 60 appellations within the Wine of Origin (WO) system, which was implemented in 1973 with a hierarchy of designated production regions, districts and wards. WO wines must be made 100% from grapes from the designated area. "Single vineyard" wines must come from a defined area of less than 5 hectares. An "Estate Wine" can come from adjacent farms, as long as they are farmed together and wine is produced on site. A ward is an area with a distinctive soil type or climate, and is roughly equivalent to a European appellation.
History
The roots of the South African wine industry can be traced to the explorations of the Dutch East India Company which established a supply station in what is now Cape Town. A Dutch surgeon, Jan van Riebeeck, was given the task of managing the station and planting vineyards to produce wines and grapes intended to ward off scurvy amongst sailors during their voyages along the spice route. The first harvest and crushing took place in 1659, seven years after landing in 1652. The man succeeding Van Riebeeck as governor of the Cape of Good Hope, Simon van der Stel, sought to improve the quality of viticulture in the region. In 1685, Van der Stel purchased a large 750 hectares (1,900 acres) estate just outside Cape Town, establishing the Constantia wine estate. After Van der Stel's death, the estate fell into disrepair but was revived in 1778 when it was purchased by Hendrik Cloete.

S1 – Ep 230 – Springbok – The Largest Town in the Namaqualand of the Northern Cape!
The road from Komaggas to Springbok might have been a tarred road, but it was stunning all the same. The Spektakel Pass was made so much more of a spectacle because of the story behind its name. When we arrived in the bustling Northern Cape town of Springbok, we could immediately see why it is the largest town in Namaqualand. We knew straightaway that we would not be able to cover even a small percentage of the town with the limited time to our disposal, so we just took a drive through and saw what we could. Then it was off to our accommodation about 10km outside of Springbok, where we had a fantastic time with a view to die for. Riemvasmaak Hot Springs Northern Cape South Africa
I had the privilege of visiting the remote village of Riemvasmaak in the dry, inhospitable far Northern Cape of South Africa. Riemvasmaak is located near the Orange River, close to the Namibian border.
It was originally settled in the early 1930s by people of Xhosa, Damara, Herero, Nama, and Coloured origin, but in the early 1970s the community was sent back to their ethnic homelands, some of them to Namibia, to make way for a military testing site. The area remained under the military's control until 1994, when a process of land restitution allowed the return of families and communities.
It's remote, barren and dry, and if solitude is what you're looking for, it probably doesn't get any better.

It was that time again! Time for us to hit the road for yet another adventure. This time we took the road to Colesberg, a town located in the Northern Cape on the main N1 route from Johannesburg to Cape Town. We were amazed to find out how rich in history this place was! From Coleskop to the old buildings, monuments and artefacts in the town. As we drove through the beautiful streets lined with fabulous old houses and trees, we could sense the calm and relaxed vibe. I visited the hotel and museum and walked down some of the streets just to enjoy the atmosphere. Even the station on the outskirts of town still seemed to be in a fair condition. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #colesberg #northerncape #history #coleskop

S1 – Ep 278 – Kenhardt – A Special Little Town in the Northern Cape!
We are always looking to admire and discover the beauty of South Africa and visiting the special little town of Kenhardt in the Northern Cape with its rich history was worth taking the time to explore. One of the town's most notable landmarks is the Rooiberg Dam, which was built in 1899. This dam was crucial in providing irrigation to the surrounding farms and played a significant role in the town's development. Today, it still stands as a testament to the town's resilience and determination. Another must-see attraction in Kenhardt is the 600-year-old camelthorn tree, which has been declared a national monument. This tree holds a special place in the town's history. Overall, a visit to Kenhardt is a journey back in time. With its stunning natural beauty, charming small-town atmosphere, and...

Nama People: Timeless Cultural Heritage in the Northern Cape
Discover the timeless cultural heritage of the Nama people in the Northern Cape.
Amidst the winds of change, the Nama people have held steadfast to their distinctive lifestyle, characterized by the iconic long dresses, full skirts, and Voortrekker bonnets reminiscent of the early Dutch settlers in the 1800s. Witness the time-honoured traditions as they prepare food and cultivate a connection to their history in the same ways as their ancestors.
Adapting to their semi-nomadic existence and the challenging environment, they've ingeniously crafted portable, beehive-shaped huts from woven reeds—a symbol of their resilience against the extremes of summer's heat and winter's chill. Join us in celebrating the Nama people's enduring spirit and the living testament of their heritage. @Tekweni

The Northern Cape is South Africa’s largest province taking up about a third of the country’s total land area. The capital of the province is Kimberley - a diverse and interesting city. The province is easily accessible with two major airports situated at Kimberley and Upington and has a good road network.
The central areas of the Northern Cape are generally flat and combined with salt pans. The Karoo rocks are sprinkled with kimberlite providing the province with its most precious held diamonds.
Sutherland, a popular if bitterly cold winter town is popular with stargazers as it boasts the southern hemisphere’s largest astronomical observatory, the sponsored Southern African Large Telescope. Many keen budding and hobby astrologers flock to Sutherland to see the stars from clear skies.
The Northern Cape is home to many national parks and conservation areas including the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (an international park shared with Botswana), Ai-Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Conservation Park and Augrabies Falls National Park. Wonderlands of flora, fauna and birdlife.
A great deal of the Northern Cape lies in the dry Nama-Karoo Biome which is home to several interesting plants such as the elephant’s trunk tree; including a variety of succulents. The province is famous for its spectacular array of florals in spring, which attracts thousands of tourists from far and wide each year to the Namaqualand region.
The Northern Cape is a thriving agricultural region especially in the Orange River Valley. A variety of fruit is cultivated in Upington and the Kakamas while the Karoo area depends on sheep farming.
Things to do and see in the Northern Cape
The vast terrain of the Northern Cape lends itself to 4x4’ing motor-biking and other off-road activities. The Orange River is at its most impressive at Augrabies Falls when the river cascades over a granite plateau approximately 191m down into a 43m pool – a spectacular sight to behold. The Northern Cape has a history immersed in San rock art with cave sites including Wonderwerk Cave near Kuruman. An area favoured by keen archaeologists the site dates back nearly a million years.
Some of the activities to do in the Northern Cape are as follows:
hiking
mountain biking
quad biking
donkey cart rides
horseriding
canoeing on the Orange River
Namaqualand Flowers
Every year in springtime the Namaqualand bursts into bloom with its amazing displays of wild flowers. It is after the season’s first rains that the arid desert suddenly springs to life in an endless submersion of colour and scent. At this time of year the Northern Cape is inundated by tourists and photographers wanting to capture this magnificent moment in time.
The Northern Cape’s Diamond Fields
The Northern Cape - a diamond delight ...
Diamonds were first discovered in this area in the 19th century which sparked mass diggings and diamond-fever for many years. All this manic behaviour led to what is now known as the "Big Hole", the largest artificial construction found in the world. This fantastic display can be viewed from a viewing platform at the Kimberley Mine Museum, a fascinating open-air museum.
Accommodation in the Northern Cape
Tourists will be delighted by the amount of accommodation options in this province. The distance between the towns are quite long and therefore rest-stops are recommended. There are bed and breakfasts, hotels, self-catering cottages and backpackers.

@Tekweni

In an informal settlement in the Northern Cape... Tannie Nellie Frans, an elderly woman who’s been living in the area for over 50 years, waits for promised government houses to be built across the road from her home. Her community has also been promised a new school and a hospital, something they’ve needed for years. Despite repeated promises, Tannie Nellie hasn’t seen a single contractor on the site. But in this province, unfulfilled promises are a regular feature of residents’ complaints and even the capital, Kimberley, hasn’t been spared. Government has neglected the water system for decades and national funding has been misused and mismanaged by both provincial and local governments. Carte Blanche continues its election coverage in this forgotten part of the country.

Home to the ancient San people, the Northern Cape is all about immense spaces, lunar landscapes, incredible mineral wealth, unique wildlife and fascinating cultures.
What a beautiful place to recharge. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #springbok #namaqualand #northerncape #komaggas #spektakelpass

The province is situated to the south of the powerful Orange River which provides the province with its good agricultural system. The Northern Cape is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean in the west with Namibia to the north and Botswana to the north-west. The Swartberg mountain range forms part of its southern border.
The regions covered in the Northern Cape are:
Diamond Fields
Green Kalahari
Kalahari
Karoo
Namakwa
Each with their own style of accommodation - the directory of advertisers provides extensive options.

I’m Chris, video creator, and lover of road tripping & the great outdoors. Now exploring the off the beaten track, hidden places of Africa, and sharing the adventure in video, photos and words. Kangela is aimed at those who want to experience gravel road travel and off road adventures, but who don’t care as much about the vehicle that gets them there, as they do about the journey itself and the destination.
I try to provide useful tips and background information about the unusual places that we visit, as well as endeavouring to draw attention to conservation, my intention is always to inform, educate and entertain.
