The Burlington metropolitan area is a metropolitan area consisting of three counties in northwestern Vermont (Chittenden, Franklin, and Grand Isle) and anchored by the principal cities of Burlington and South Burlington. The Office of Management and Budget defines the area as one of its metropolitan statistical areas (the Burlington-South Burlington Metropolitan Statistical Area), a designation used for statistical purposes by the United States Census Bureau and other agencies. The MSA designation represents the counties containing the contiguous urbanized area centered on the city of Burlington, plus adjacent counties that are socially and economically linked to the urban core (as measured by commuting). An alternative definition using towns instead of counties as basic units is the Burlington-South Burlington New England City and Town Area (NECTA). That New England city and town area had an estimated population of 194,354 in 2007.
The three-county area contains four of Vermont's nine cities and as of the 2000 Census had a population of 198,889. A July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 208,055. As of the 2010 Census, the combined population of the three counties is 211,261.
Burlington had a population of 42,417 at the 2010 census. The city is the heart of the Burlington metropolitan area, consisting of the three northwestern Vermont counties of Chittenden, Franklin and Grand Isle and comprising the cities of Burlington, South Burlington, and Winooski; the towns of Colchester, Essex, and Williston; and the village of Essex Junction. According to 2012 U.S. Census estimates, the metro area had an estimated population of 213,701, approximately one third of Vermont's total population.
The station is the closest station to Burlington that is currently served by Amtrak, as Burlington Union Station no longer serves passenger trains. Burlington is about a 25-minute bus ride away from the station on the CCTA, the local bus system.
A metropolitan area, sometimes referred to as a metropolitan area, metro area or just metro, is a region consisting of a densely populated urban core and its less-populated surrounding territories, sharing industry, infrastructure, and housing.
A metro area usually comprises multiple jurisdictions and municipalities: neighborhoods, townships, cities, exurbs, suburbs, counties, districts, states, and even nations like the eurodistricts. As social, economic and political institutions have changed, metropolitan areas have become key economic and political regions. Metropolitan areas include one or more urban areas, as well as satellite cities, towns and intervening rural areas that are socio-economically tied to the urban core, typically measured by commuting patterns.
For urban centres outside metropolitan areas, that generate a similar attraction at smaller scale for their region, the concept of the regiopolis and respectively regiopolitan area or regio was introduced by German professors in 2006.
The metropolitan area (Portuguese:área metropolitana) is a type of administrative division in Portugal. Since the 2013 local government reform, there are two metropolitan areas: Lisbon and Porto. The metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto were created in 1991. A law passed in 2003 supported the creation of more metropolitan areas, under the conditions that they consisted of at least nine municipalities (concelhos) and had at least 350,000 inhabitants. Several metropolitan areas were created under this law (Algarve, Aveiro, Coimbra, Minho and Viseu), but a law passed in 2008 abolished these, converting them into intermunicipal communities, whose territories are (roughly) based on the NUTS III statistical regions.
The branches of administration of the metropolitan area are the metropolitan council, the metropolitan executive committee and the strategic board for metropolitan development. The metropolitan council is composed of the presidents of the municipal chambers of the municipalities.
An aire urbaine (literal and official translation: "urban area") is an INSEE (France's national statistics bureau) statistical concept describing a core of urban development and the extent of its commuter activity. When applied to larger agglomerations, this unit becomes similar to a U.S. metropolitan area, and the INSEE sometimes uses the term aire métropolitaine to refer to France's larger aires urbaines.
Composition
The aire urbaine is based on France's nationwide map of interlocking administrative commune municipalities: when a commune has over 2000 inhabitants and contains a centre of dense construction (buildings spaced no more than 200 metres apart), it is combined with other adjoining communes fulfilling the same criteria to become a single unité urbaine ("urban unit" ); if an urban unit offers over 10,000 jobs and its economical development is enough to draw more than 40% of the population of a nearby municipalities (and other municipalities drawn to these in the same way) as commuters, it becomes a pôle urbain ("urban cluster") and the "commuter municipalities" become its couronne ("rim"), but this only on the condition that the urban unit itself is not part of another urban cluster's rim. The aire urbaine is an urban cluster and its rim combined, or a statistical area describing a central urban core and its economic influence on surrounding municipalities.
With a population of 7,671, the state capital of Montpelier is the least populous state capital in the US. Vermont's most populous city is Burlington. With a 2013 population of 42,284, Burlington is the least populous city in the United States to be the largest city within a state. Burlington's metropolitan area has a population of 214,796. Vermont is one of the most racially homogeneous states; 94.3% of its population identified as non-Hispanic white in 2010.

Essex Junction, Vermont AMTRAK stop
On the way to the LHS I stopped to see AMTRAK's Vermonter stop at Essex Junction and observe a little infrastructure on the way. The first video section is a little shaky because I didn't have a tripod, apologies. It is also a little long. There was enough to keep my interest however. At the very least it was a good Monday morning diversion. Enjoy!

Local citizens have made a practice of picking up litter in the vicinity of the train tracks, weeding and planting flowers near the station and promoting the Vermonter with informational flyers. A weekly farmer’s market is held across the road from the depot as part of events celebrating Railroad Avenue and the village’s railroad heritage, which include special day trips on the Vermonter.

Essex Junction was incorporated in 1892, growing out of the conjunction of rail lines crossing there, with 36 trains a day running on four tracks at one time, alongside restaurants, a hotel, and the Drury brick yard. The brick yard lasted for over 100 years and over 500 million bricks came out of it.
This Place in History is produced in partnership by Local 22 & Local 44 (www.mychamplainvalley.com) and the Vermont Historical Society.
Four our final video from Vermont we got some time to explore Burlington & we were pleasantly surprised by several features of this city! Then we headed back to essex junction station to catch the Vermonter train back to Philadelphia...but not until we tried the best (savory) muffin at Nest Bakery.

Essex Junction station, also known as Essex Junction–Burlington, is an Amtrak train station in the city of Essex Junction, Vermont. The station was originally built by the Central Vermont Railway in 1959. It serves Amtrak's Vermonter train, which runs from St. Albans, near the Canada–U.S. border, south to Washington, D.C.
The Essex Junction station has received negative attention in recent years, with city officials saying it can make visitors "feel scared or intimidated". Local officials have authorized a $3.5 million face-lift of the station, backed by federal funds, which would prepare the station to accommodate larger passenger numbers if the proposed Vermonter extension to Montreal is built.

Enjoy!
