The Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet is a school of classical ballet in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Established in 1738 during the reign of Empress Anna, the academy was known as the Imperial Ballet School up until Soviet times, when, after a brief hiatus, the school was re-established as the Leningrad State Choreographic Institute. In 1957, the school was renamed in honor of the renowned pedagogue Agrippina Vaganova, who cultivated the method of classical ballet training that has been taught there since the late 1920s. Graduates of the school include some of the most famous ballet dancers, choreographers and teachers in history and many of the world's leading ballet schools have adopted elements of the Vaganova method into their own training.
Russian ballet is a form of ballet characteristic of or originating from Russia.
Imperial Russian Ballet
Until 1689, ballet in Russia was nonexistent. The Tsarist control and isolationism in Russia allowed for little influence from the West. While the West went through the revolutions of “the Reformation, the Renaissance, and science…Russia remained cut off and bound up in the timeless liturgies of the Orthodox faith”. It wasn't until the rise of Peter the Great that Russian society opened up to the West. St. Petersburg was erected to embrace the West and compete against Moscow’s backwardness. Yet the challenge to become “European” collided with the reality of Russian isolationism: “In striking contrast to their west European counterparts, the Russian elite lived unadorned lives: in wooden houses and slept on benches (or on top of the warm stove) and their clothing and manners resembled those of peasants: rough and indecorous. Men coveted long and bushy black beards, which they took to be a sign of godliness and masculinity (God was bearded and women couldn't grow one). Only demons were depicted as clean-shaven. Fancy foreign dress was prohibited, and foreigners living in Moscow were quarantined in their own ‘German Suburb,’ a ghetto of European culture coveted by a few and dismissed by most. Muscovite society was not society in any form recognizable in the West.
Russian Ballet is an artist's book by the English artist David Bomberg published in 1919. The work describes the impact of seeing a performance of Diaghilev'sBallets Russes, and is based on a series of drawings Bomberg had done around 1914, while associated with the Vorticist group of avant-garde artists in London. Centred on Wyndham Lewis and Ezra Pound, the movement flourished briefly 1914–1915, before being dispersed by the impact of the First World War. The only surviving example of a vorticist artist's book, the work can be seen as a parody of Marinetti's seminal futurist book Zang Tumb Tumb, using similar language to the Italian's work glorifying war, (Methodic discord startles ...), but instead praising the impact of watching the decidedly less macho Ballets Russes in full flow.
'Bomberg was the most audacious painter of his generation at the Slade, proving ... that he could absorb the most experimental European ideas, fuse these with Jewish influences and come up with a robust alternative of his own. His treatment of the human figure, in terms of angular, clear-cut forms charged with enormous energy, reveals his determination to bring about a drastic renewal in British painting.' Richard Cork

'Ballerina' Book Trailer
'Ballerina' by Monica Loughman with Jean Harrington
Monica Loughman's story is the enchanting tale of a 14-year-old girl leaving the comforts of home to train in a strict and austere Russian ballet school. She brought her dreams of becoming a professional ballerina with her. While many young ballerinas' aspirations are unfulfilled, Loughman became a dancing sensation and was the first Western European to join Russia's distinguished Perm State Theatre of Opera and Ballet.
Not just for ballet lovers, this gripping tale also details the endurance and stamina needed to survive in post Soviet-Union Russia. Monica vividly evokes the closed and foreign world of ballet with natural assurance. Her book also reveals the brutality and suffering that often lies behind ballet's fairytale facade.

Oblong cloth binding, gilt title lettering embossed cover designs. A long series of illustrated lessons all bound in order, starting with #1 and ending with lesson #17. Many lessons are 15+ pages, the long run of individual lessons is quite thick.
Fascinating and wonderful ballet dance-related item, a unique assortment of items, all of which must only survive (due to their highly limited original distribution) in very small numbers today.
Item is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Item is not new or in "new" condition. Missing the tiny screws at ends of short metal tubes inside the binding.
Loosely laid in are three 1923-4 magazines issued by Senja Russakoff School of Dancing, as well as a run of 13 consecutive issues (stapled together long ago) of The Stain Slipper, a Chicago dance club illustrated newsletter of this same era.
Binding age worn, yet still remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is clean, internally well preserved, little staining or soiling, any flaws of a minor type unworthy of specific mention.
Still attractive on the shelf. Item displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this antique item survives.

Ballerina is the story of a young girl's single-minded determination to succeed against the odds. It is a truly engrossing story.
