Early life and career
Sammy Kershaw was born in Kaplan in Acadiana in south Louisiana and is the third cousin of singer Doug Kershaw. When he was 11, his grandfather gave him his first guitar. But his father died that year, so Sammy had to work a variety of day jobs while playing roadhouses at night to support his family. He began performing in Acadiana with Louisiana legend J.B. Pere. Subsequently, he opened shows for Ray Price, Merle Haggard, and George Jones while barely into his teens. When the pressures of growing up fast took their toll in the form of a serious drug and alcohol problem, he quit his bad habits in 1988 and took a break from music to work as a remodeling supervisor at Wal-Mart.
According to William Studwell in The Christmas Carol Reader, "Up on the House Top" was the second-oldest secular Christmas song, outdone only by "Jingle Bells", which was written in 1857 (although the latter was originally intended as a Thanksgiving song). It is also considered the first Yuletide song to focus primarily on Santa Claus. According to Readers Digest Merry Christmas Song Book, Hanby probably owes the idea that Santa and his sleigh land on the roof of homes to Clement C. Moore's 1822 poem, "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (also commonly known as "The Night Before Christmas"). Benjamin Russell Hanby was born in 1833 near Rushville, Ohio, the son of a minister involved with the Underground Railroad. During his short life, he wrote some 80 songs before dying of tuberculosis in 1867. Other than "Up on the House Top", his best-known song is "Darling Nelly Gray".

I've seen my heart get hurt So many times I thought that it would die I've found myself awake at nights Where all I did was sit and cry I'm not asking for your pity I'm just trying to let you know what's on my mind I must be getting older But everybody says that old is wise You ask me why I don't Give my all and everything to you Well I'm a little to old for merry-go-rounds and games to me are just for fools So until I know it's real I'll never give my heart away again I must be getting older Cause I've never been smarter than I am I've felt the pain of losing When lovin always let me down I'm not too tough for bruisin My heart could probably stand another round It's just that I've been weakened And I'm finally old enough to make my stand I must be getting older Cause I've never been smarter than I am I must be getting older
