University College Cork – National University of Ireland, Cork (UCC) (Irish: Coláiste na hOllscoile Corcaigh) is a constituent university of the National University of Ireland. The university is located in Cork.
The university was founded in 1845 as one of three Queen’s Colleges located in Belfast, Cork, and Galway. It became University College, Cork, under the Irish Universities Act of 1908. The Universities Act 1997 renamed the university as National University of Ireland, Cork, and a Ministerial Order of 1998 renamed the university as University College Cork – National University of Ireland, Cork, though it continues to be almost universally known as University College Cork.
Amongst other rankings and awards, the university was named Irish University of the Year by the Sunday Times on four occasions; most recently in 2015/2016. In 2015, UCC was also named as top performing university by the European Commission funded U-Multirank system, based on obtaining the highest number of "A" scores (21 out of 28 metrics) among a field of 1200 partaking universities. UCC also became the first university to achieve the ISO 50001 standard in energy management in 2011.
The term "university college" is used in a number of countries to denote college institutions that provide tertiary education but do not have full or independent university status. A university college is often part of a larger university. The precise usage varies from country to country.
Australia
In Australia, the term University College was used to refer to educational institutions that were like universities, but lacked full autonomy. The Latrobe University College of Northern Victoria was one such college. University colleges existing today generally cater for specific subjects (such as Theology, or the Arts). UNSW@ADFA was previously known as the University College, ADFA, and it provides the tertiary education component of officer cadet training at the Australian Defence Force Academy . It is a branch of the University of New South Wales.
Additionally, some residential colleges associated with universities are named "University College". These halls of residence are common in Australian universities and primarily provide accommodation to students. They may also provide academic support (such as tutorials) and social activities for residents. University College, Melbourne, formerly University Women's College, is one such residential college. It is affiliated with the University of Melbourne.
In Sweden, Norway and Denmark, a university college (Swedish: högskola; Norwegian Bokmål: høyskole/høgskole; Norwegian Nynorsk: høgskole/høgskule; Danish: professionshøjskole; literally meaning "high school", "professional high school" or "professional college") is an independent institution that provides tertiary education (Bachelor and Master degrees) and in some cases also quaternary education (PhD) to a very limited extent, and that traditionally has its emphasis on less academic and more vocational programmes such as teacher or nursing education as well as shorter technical education. It is somewhat similar to a Fachhochschule in Germany and to a Polytechnic in the United Kingdom.
Situation in Scandinavia
Sweden
The Swedish government is the only entity that can attribute university status, and it does that only to generally more research-intensive higher education institutions. However, the exact situation of Swedish university colleges varies in that respect, i.e. some of them may be engaged in substantial research and even grant doctoral degrees in a limited number of fields. The main difference between an institution with full university status and a university college lies in the larger variety of academic subjects offered at a university, and the traditional right of the university to award doctoral degrees in any field.

A big welcome to University College Cork from J.P. Quinn, Head of UCC Visitor Centre.
UCC is a world class teaching and research led university. A place full of knowledge and wonder. This building is the Main Quadrangle. Many people think that The Quadrangle building looks like Hogwarts - a building full of magic. In UCC all of our buildings are filled with magic and the wands or tools that we use to conduct this magic is research.
Just outside the door of UCC Visitors’ Centre is our wonderful collection of Ogham Stones. These stones once stood in many fields and mountainsides in the South of Ireland and have been brought here to UCC so that more people can see these artefacts. The stones are approximately 1,500 to 2,000 years old and they are called Ogham Stones because they contain the Celtic alphabet of Ogham. Ogham is an ancient alphabet made up of 25 letters that was inspired by Ogma the Celtic God of Eloquence. Ogham was carved from and read from the bottom left of the stone.
In front of our Main Quadrangle building is the grass area known as the Quad. It is divided into four square sections with a gravel pathway running horizontally and vertically through the middle. This pathway has led to the creation of the most popular urban myth in the college today. After their Conferrings graduating students, in their graduation gowns and hats, would proceed onto the Quad and march down the pathway in the middle. Marching through the Quad symbolically marked the transition from student life to the next phase of their post college life. However, over the last sixty years or so many students began to believe that walking in a straight line through the Quad before graduation would lead to bad luck, such as failing exams. Most students now try and avoid walking through the Quad so as not to tempt fate!
One of our universities most famous scientists and researchers was George Boole. George Boole became the first professor of mathematics of UCC in 1849. Boole devised a type of code called Boolean Logic which was later used in the foundation of Computer Science. Your mobile phone, your computer, your iPad, and your x box all require the application of Boolean Logic. Boolean Logic that was devised here at University College Cork. Boole was a real life mathematical wizard and as far as we are concerned Boole is Cool. Funnily enough the bust has led to a new superstition amongst students who now believe that rubbing the statues nose gives them good luck before their exams. The nose on the statue has begun to wear away as a result an occurrence that would no doubt amuse George Boole himself.
We hoped you have enjoyed a little look at a few of the many things there are to UCC - a place full of research, magic and discovery.
