U.S. vetoes UN resolution for cease-fire as Israel ramps up airstrikes in Gaza
The U.S. vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution that called for a cease-fire in Gaza. The move came as the UN is ramping up already dire warnings of a humanitarian catastrophe if more aid isn't sent into Gaza soon. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, nearly 17,500 Palestinians have been killed and the Israeli air and ground campaign is not slowing down. Amna Nawaz reports.

US Vetoes UN Resolution on Gaza Ceasefire Calling on Israel to End Assault | Firstpost America
The United States has vetoed another UN resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Washington pushed the 15-member body to call for a temporary ceasefire linked to the release of hostages by Hamas. The US was the only vote against the ceasefire resolution. Palestine's UN Ambassador said the veto gives Israel the message that it can continue to get away with murder. Russia and China lashed out at Washington over its move. The United States has now proposed a rival draft resolution. Watch this video for details.

푸틴, 김정은에 러시아산 자동차 선물 안보리 제재 위반 가능성
Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently presented North Korea's leader with a Russian vehicle.
Pundits say the gift may represent a deepening of Moscow-Pyongyang relations, that could also contravene UN Security Council resolutions.
Our North Korean affairs correspondent Kim Jung-sil reports.
Is an old tradition back?
Just like Joseph Stalin who presented Kim Il-sung with a limousine back in 1948, Russian President Vladimir Putin presented North Korean leader Kim Jong-un with a car on Sunday.
This is according to North Korea's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper on Tuesday.
Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-un's younger sister who practically acts as a de-facto spokesperson for him, said the car was a "clear indication" of the close friendship between the two leaders.
The gift isn't a total surprise considering Kim Jong-un showed interest in Putin's car back in September when he visited Russia's Far East.
There, he joined the Russian president to sit in the back of Putin's Aurus Senat, a massive 7-ton armored limo.
Few details were given by Pyongyang about the car except that it was Russian-made, but the Kremlin later confirmed on Tuesday that the car was made by Russian luxury car brand, Aurus.
For leaders around the world, a car is linked directly to their safety.
Back in 2018, then-U.S. President Donald Trump also showed his presidential Cadillac, nicknamed "the Beast," to the North's leader.
With concerns rising on arms transfers between Pyongyang and Moscow, the "luxury car gift" may entail a much bigger concern: a Russian decision not to abide by UN Security Council resolutions on Pyongyang.
UNSC resolutions ban member-states from the "direct or indirect supply, sale, or transfer" of luxury goods to North Korea, including cars.
A senior official at South Korea's unification ministry condemned North Korea on Tuesday for publicly announcing the gift, while calling on Russia to realize its responsibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

He also ripped the U.S. for vetoing the third ceasefire resolution at the UNSC. Russia said the U.S. is shamefully covering for Israel’s plan to make Gaza uninhabitable. The Palestinian envoy said at the UN Security Council that the U.S. veto was a message to Israel that “it can continue to get away with murder.”

Remarks by Dennis Francis, President of the 78th session of the General Assembly, on the situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, at the 56th plenary meeting of the General Assembly.
Marking two years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, General Assembly President Dennis Francis today (23 Feb) chaired a plenary debate on the Situation in the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, and said, “the world bore witness as that fateful day marked the onset of a series of protracted, illegal and flagrant violations of the UN charter and of international law.”
Francis said, “as you, the representatives of UN member States, gather here today, you can neither be blind to the ongoing destruction and devastation, or ignore the plight of the people of Ukraine.”
He said, “the war has affected every member state gathered in this hall, whether in the form of soaring food prices, or in the context of energy insecurity. Without doubt, this needless war has been a significant catalyst in reshaping world geopolitics and geoeconomics, not only inflicting direct harm on the countries involved, but also impeding the developmental progress of numerous others, especially developing countries.”
