There are a number of competing ideas as to the origin of the name of the village. The name Uelen is thought by some sources to derive from the Chukchi "uvelen" meaning "black, thawed patch", since the village is found at the foot of a hill surrounded by black mounds which are visible throughout the year and were often used as a navigation aid in the region.

Small, rugged, and surrounded by ice and harsh seas, the islands are located off the Alaskan coast in the middle of the Bering Strait. why? because we are used to a map where Russa is far on the right and USA is far on the left. But the truth is that these are neighboring countries! Yes!

Russia's Northernmost Port Hangs On At 'The Edge Of The Earth'
The population of Dikson, Russia's most northerly port, has dwindled from 5,000 in the Soviet era to some 300 today. The development of shipping routes through the Russian Arctic offers some promise of renewal, but most residents see little future in this Siberian outpost.

Russia superhighway: NYC to London by car a reality or pipedream?
Driving from London to New York City would be possible if Russia succeeds in building a superhighway spanning across the country with links to western Europe and Asia.

Yakunin said other infrastructure such as oil pipelines, power plants and water supply facilities will be built alongside the highway and high-speed railway.
The mega highway system will face a multitude of difficulties, one of them being the connection to Alaska across the Bering Strait. Either a long bridge or a undersea tunnel would be needed.
Money is likely to be another challenge. Russian Railways said the construction cost would amount to trillions of dollars.

You probably know that Alaska and Russia are relatively close – with just the Bering Sea between them, they’re only about 55 miles apart.
But there’s an American town that is much closer, just a couple miles from Russia. And In winter, they can actually walk there, but they don’t… I don’t think.
Diomede is an American town of about 100 people on a small island in the Bering Sea called Little Diomede Island.
It is one of the two Diomede Islands that sit about halfway between mainland Alaska and mainland Russia.
The western island – Big Diomede – is Russian. The eastern island – Little Diomede – is American. They are 2.5 miles apart. The only thing between them is water. In winter, the notoriously cold water freezes up, creating a 2.5 mile ice bridge that’s walkable. (I’m told it takes about a half hour). So technically you CAN walk from the US to Russia.
If you do, you also instantaneously step into the future bc Big Diomede is 21 hours ahead of Little Diomede. The international date line falls right smack between them so you can literally step a whole day ahead.
I like finding interesting things on maps. Hope you do too.
