In March 2003 she was a first responder in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, awaiting orders from the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Turkey. She was part of Cruiser-Destroyer Group 8. The Helicopter Squadron attached to the Cape during this cruise was HSL-44 (out of Mayport Naval Station). During this deployment, the Cape St. George became one of the first US Navy ships to fire cruise missiles from the Mediterranean at a target (Iraq). The Cape soon set sail for the Persian Gulf to continue missile support operations after the Government of Turkey claimed that a cruise missile landed, intact, on Turkish soil. Needless to say, US warships were no longer allowed to fire missiles over Turkish airspace. The Cape St. George then became the first US Navy ship ever to fire from two theaters of battle in history during her five month cruise, the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf. The photograph of the USS Cape St. George firing its first missile at Iraq (cover photo) from the Mediterranean Sea was taken by one of two sailors deployed in one of the Cape's two RHIB boats. (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) Video footage was also taken and was seen shortly after on CNN. The photograph made papers nationwide soon after and is now the Cape's token photograph.
During the Pacific War the Japanese used the Cape to watch out for American bombers from Guadalcanal heading towards Rabaul. The concrete bunker they built is still there. From information gathered from men from Lambom Village who are the traditional land owners and most of whom have either died or are now very old and who were forced to work for the Japanese, the Japanese commander/officer-in-charge during the war was called Kato. Apart from its association with the war in the Pacific and particularly in the New Guinea Islands region, "Cape St. George" is traditionally known in the local Siar language as Lain Silou - this is in reference to its protruding point into the outer sea and the fact that it is quite dangerous during rough seas to ships sailing past/around it.
Saint George (Greek:ΓεώργιοςGeorgios; Latin:Georgius; AD 275–281 to 23 April 303), according to legend, was a soldier in the Roman army who later became venerated as a Christian martyr. His parents were Christians of Greek background; his father Gerontius was a Roman army official from Cappadocia and his mother Polychronia was a Christian from Lydda in the Roman province of Syria Palaestina (Palestine). Accounts differ regarding whether George was born in Cappadocia or Syria Palaestina, but agree that he was raised at least partly in Lydda. Saint George became an officer in the Roman army in the Guard of Diocletian, who ordered his death for failing to recant his Christian faith.
The riding was formed in 1926 from parts of the old Toronto Northeast and Toronto Southeast ridings. Its western boundary starting at Toronto Harbour went north following the line of Simcoe Street. At Queen Street West it jogged east a block to University Avenue. It followed this street north continuing along Queen's Park Crescent East and Avenue Road north to St. Clair Avenue West. At St. Clair it turned east and went to Yonge Street. At Yonge it turned south and followed this street to Bloor Street. It then turned east following Bloor until it reached Sherbourne Street. It then followed Sherbourne back south until it met the harbour.
