The vessel that eventually became the light aircraft carrier Bataan was originally planned as the Cleveland-classlight cruiserBuffalo (CL-99). Following the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the need for more carriers became urgent. In response, the Navy ordered the conversion of nine Cleveland-class light cruiser then under construction to completion as light aircraft carriers. These became known as the Independence-classlight aircraft carriers. Thus, CL-99 was reclassified CV-29 and renamed Bataan on 2 June 1942. She was further reclassified as CVL-29 on 15 July 1943.
The USS Bataan Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) were the first ships to respond after the 11 September 2001 attacks. The ship was home on leave during the attack and was scheduled to be deployed on 19 September 2001. The crew was called back from early leave and the ship headed for New York Harbor, as it is capable of acting as a 600-bed hospital ship with surgical suites on board. Once it was determined there were few survivors, Bataan returned to Norfolk, Virginia. The ship's crew prepared and onloaded the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit with gear both pierside in Norfolk, and off the coast of North Carolina from Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune. The Bataan ARG delivered more than 2,500 Marines and their equipment to Pakistan with the aim to enter Afghanistan, thus opening Operation Enduring Freedom. The Bataan ARG stayed on station off the coast of Pakistan and completed the longest sustained amphibious assault in U.S. history with sailors not touching ground for over four months.
The Battle of Bataan followed the Japanese December 1941 invasion of the Philippines and lasted from January 1 to April 9, 1942. The American and Filipino forces retreated from Manila to the nearby mountainous Bataan Peninsula for a desperate last stand, hoping for a relief force. However, the Allies were being driven back in all areas of the Pacific theater and none could be sent. After three months of stubborn resistance, the starving and malaria-ridden defenders surrendered and were forced to undertake the infamous Bataan Death March.
Plot
The US Army is conducting a fighting retreat. A high bridge spans a ravine on the Bataan Peninsula. After the army and some civilians cross, a group of eleven hastily assembled soldiers from different units is assigned to blow it up and delay Japanese rebuilding efforts as long as possible. The rear guard is a mixed lot, including:

USS BATAAN (LHD 5) is a multipurpose amphibious assault ship commissioned in 1997 and homeported in Norfolk, Va. With a crew of nearly 1000 Sailors and Marines, the ship is capable of embarking a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), a mix of aircraft including the MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor helicopter and AV-8B Harrier light attack jet, and up to three Landing Craft Air Cushion. Bataan is returning from a deployment in the Fifth and Sixth Fleet Area of Operations with 1200 embarked Marines of the 22d MEU. The ship and her crew departed Norfolk Naval Station with two weeks' notice and nearly four months ahead of schedule on an open-ended deployment. The 2011-2012 deployment is the longest made by a U.S. naval ship since the early 1970s. (U.S. Navy video/Released)
The Bataan Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) returned home Thursday following an eight-and-a-half month deployment.
